Bleu Royal will be the leading highlight of the upcoming Magnificent Jewels auction on 07 November at Christie’s Geneva. Weighing 17.61 carats, Bleu Royal is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue gem ever to appear for sale in auction history.
Cut and polished into a perfectly symmetrical pear combined with a rich vivid blue colour and flawless purity, this diamond is amongst the rarest to have been unearthed (estimate in the region of US$35 Million). Bleu Royal has remained part of an important private collection for the past 50 years. This is the first time the stone, set in a ring, will be presented for sale at auction.

The Bleu Royal diamond is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ever to appear at auction, and I’m writing to you because my client 77 Diamonds believes it could smash the record for the most expensive blue diamond ever sold at auction.

Here’s why: Firstly, the current world record for the most expensive fancy vivid blue diamond sold at auction is for a diamond that is smaller than the Bleu Royal - it’s the 14.52ct Oppenheimer Blue, which fetched a cool $57.5m in 2016. Secondly, the current world record holder for the largest internally flawless fancy vivid blue diamond is also smaller than the Bleu Royal - it’s the 15.10 carat De Beers Blue and it sold for $57.4m in 2022." "That said, given the current turbulent financial markets, this auction will be a great litmus test to see if top collectors will splash out for an incredibly rare asset. Hard assets tend to do well when there is higher inflation. However, while diamonds do not have a yield, they compete for the attention of investors with assets that do, like bonds and treasuries."
The Bleu Royal - key facts
The Bleu Royal, at 17.61 carats, is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue gem ever to appear at auction.
It is estimated by Christie’s to fetch between $35m and $50 million, a higher estimate than was given to the Oppenheimer Blue in 2016, which ended up fetching $57.5m.
The Bleu Royal has been part of an important private collection for the past 50 years.
The Bleu Royal has been on a recent travelling exhibition in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and New York.
Only three Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds over 10 carats have appeared during the last 250 years of auctions at Christie's, the largest being the 14.62 carat Oppenheimer Blue which fetched $57.5m in 2016.

In the saleroom, Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds over 10 carats are virtually unheard of — in more than 250 years of auction history at Christie’s, only three such stones have ever appeared for sale in the 21st century: The Bulgari Blue10.95 carats, sold for $15,762,500, The Winston Blue13.22 carats, sold for $23,795,372 and The Oppenheimer Blue.
