The Rock, the largest white diamond to ever appear at auction has sold at Christie's Geneva for 21.7m Swiss Francs (US$21.9m).
At 228.31 carats, The Rock is the largest D to Z colour, pear-shaped diamond the Gemological Institute has ever graded. Christie's had estimated The Rock would sell for $20m to $30m. A Christie's video of the Rock is here.

"The buyer has bagged a very reasonable price for an exceptionally huge and rare diamond of regal proportions. It is too big to set on even the most ambitious engagement ring. Against a backdrop of record breaking inflation, a portion of which is predicted to persist, hard assets such as world-class diamonds have a history of performing well."
The Rock - key facts
- The Rock was mined and polished over 20 years ago in South Africa.
- Christie's exhibited The Rock in Dubai in late March, before bringing it to Taipei, Taiwan, New York and finally Geneva.
- Diamonds are graded by colour with D being the most pure white diamond colour in existence. The Rock is a G colour. While Flawless is the highest clarity of diamonds in existence, The Rock is VS1 clarity which means any inclusions could not typically be seen with the naked eye and would even be hard to see with 10 times magnification.
