- Rolls-Royce will unveil Spectre, the world’s first all-electric super coupé at Salon Privé
From 30th August 2023, patrons of luxury will convene at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire for one of the final summer highlights in the luxury calendar: Salon Privé. In recognition of this highly exclusive gathering, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will showcase Spectre, the world’s first ultra- luxury all-electric super coupé, and Ghost, the most successful product in the marque’s storied 119-year history. Spectre, the marque’s first all-electric super coupé, will be on display at the event Ghost will also join the assemblage of motor cars A Bespoke Ghost will lead 120-mile Tour Privé around the Cotswolds on 29th August “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to return once again to Salon Privé, set in the grounds of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. This event is an important occasion in our annual calendar – it is a great celebration of automotive luxury and high-class society, in a beautiful, historical setting. I am delighted to confirm that Spectre, the marque’s first-fully electric car, will be on display at the event – an incredibly agile, remarkably silent, and transformative motor car, that exudes sophistication and cool modern luxury. Alongside Spectre, a vibrant Ghost, presented in a vivacious hue, Tucana Purple, will also be on display. I am very much looking forward to meeting our trusted dealer partners, esteemed clients, and media friends at this highly exclusive Concours d’Elégance.” Boris Weletzky, Regional Director – United Kingdom, Europe, and Central Asia, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars ROLLS-ROYCE SPECTRE Spectre represents an exciting new era for the world’s leading luxury marque – the beginning of a bold all-electric age. Almost two years ago, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars made an historic announcement, declaring its commitment to electric technology: in 2023, the brand would launch its first-fully electric car, and by the end of 2030 the marque’s entire portfolio of cars will be all-electric. Since this momentous announcement, Spectre has been on a remarkable journey, undergoing a rigorous testing programme, in extreme conditions and temperatures, spanning 2.5million kilometres, simulating more than 400 years of use. Spectre has also received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the world’s media, following its global launch in California earlier this summer. At this year’s Salon Privé, Spectre will be presented in a bright expression of Witterings Blue with a vibrant Mandarin Coachline, illustrating the contemporary yet luxurious essence that exists at the very heart of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Upon opening the doors, one encounters an interior suite of Charles Blue, offset with Mandarin applied to the seat piping and monogrammed headrests. In addition to the Witterings Blue Spectre that will take pride of place front and centre of the stand, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to confirm that a second Spectre will be on display at the event. A truly sleek and bold commission presented in Chartreuse and Black Diamond, with a cosseting and calming cabin finished in Chartreuse, Grace White and Peony Pink, will join the daily parade throughout the grounds of Blenheim Palace. ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST Ghost represents a world of boundless potential, an authentic automotive wonder, built on the marque’s proprietary all-aluminium spaceframe Architecture of Luxury. For Salon Privé, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents a truly vibrant and playful expression of Ghost, finished in Tucana Purple, a colour reminiscent of the Southern night sky that surrounds the Tucana constellation. A striking and contrasting Lime Green Coachline, combined with Lime Green Pinstripe Tyres, confidently resolve the exterior. Inside, the Lime Green interior appointments on the seat piping, steering wheel, monogrammed headrests, and arm rests, echo the exterior hue. In addition to the Tucana Purple Ghost on the stand, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to confirm that a second Ghost will elegantly lead the Tour Privé, a rolling 120-mile concours through the Cotswolds – an honour reflective of this motor car’s significant stature. - Lamborghini to celebrate 60 years at Salon Privé
Salon Privé opens on August 30 with spectacular display of 70-plus V12 Lamborghinis as part of the Salon Privé Club Trophy by Lockton on Supercar Saturday and Lamborghini Revuelto, the world’s first super sports V12 hybrid HPEV Lamborghini will continue its 60th anniversary celebrations at Salon Privé later this month – with the radical Revuelto, the firm’s first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in, confirmed to make one of its first UK appearances. With a staggering 1,015hp, the first Lamborghini High-Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) combines an all-new naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine with three electric motors and a double-clutch gearbox. It has all-wheel drive, 13 drive modes and even offers a fully-electric mode. This ability to drive as a purely electric car helps reduce overall CO2 emissions by 30% – yet the Lamborghini Revuelto also delivers a new paradigm in terms of performance, sportiness and driving pleasure. The car has the best weight-to-power ratio in the history of Lamborghini, accelerating from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds and onto a top speed of more than 217mph. Lamborghini, in partnership with Lamborghini Birmingham, is also planning to show models from the Huracan and Urus ranges. The Lamborghini 60th anniversary celebrations continue on the Salon Privé Blenheim South Lawn, where a fabulous showcase of 70-plus classic V12 Lamborghinis will be on display. This dedicated Club event on 2 September will be part of the famous Salon Privé Supercar Saturday. There will be an additional display of V8 and V10 Lamborghinis in the Great Court, as part of the Salon Privé Club Trophy by Lockton. “It is fantastic that Salon Privé is going to be part of the year-long celebrations marking 60 years of Lamborghini,” said Salon Privé co-founder and director David Bagley. “Showcasing the tremendous Lamborghini Revuelto will be a real highlight, particularly as we’re also going to see a display of more than 70 classic V12 Lamborghinis during Salon Privé Supercar Saturday. It will be a wonderful way to celebrate 60 years of Lamborghini.” Salon Privé Week 2023 30 August – Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva. 31 August – Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva. 1 September – Salon Privé Ladies’ Day presented by Boodles. 2 September – Salon Privé Supercar Saturday. - Artist Residencies in the 21st Century
Where the Mind can Breathe By Elga Wimmer The BODY. The Watermill Center Summer Benefit, 2023 Evelyn Dugan, Taut Nature. Photo by Maria Baranova Suzuki. Artist residencies are popping up like mushrooms everywhere, often competing with long-standing institutions. Nestled in the rolling hills and medieval towns overlooking vineyards, acres of landscaped grounds, and pristine beach areas, these new centers of creativity for artists offer a welcome respite from the shared studios, noisy cities, and fierce competition of the art market that have come to define the artist experience. Here we take a look at local artist residencies in Upstate New York and Long Island, as well as internationally, in the remote Asti area of Italy and as far away as Kenya, on the beaches of Dakar. Art Omi was one of the first artist residencies I visited with John Weber, a board member and prominent New York art dealer and gallery owner in the 1990s. With relatively few artists at the time, you could actually get to know each artist and discover some of the great talents of tomorrow while, in the after-hours, dancing the night away at a two-story open red barn, a refurbished dairy farm that still houses most of the studios today. Lia Porto, artist-in-residence, and visitor Annina Nosei at Art Omi. Photo by Elga Wimmer The artists, from different disciplines, countries, and backgrounds, shared meals, exchanged ideas, collaborated on projects, and attended workshops, all while participating in a shared, art-driven daily life. The residency was founded in 1992 by Francis Greenburger, a real estate developer, literary agent, and art enthusiast. Greenburger wanted to connect with artists beyond the gallery and museum experience to gain first-hand experience and possibly collect artwork at the source being made by tomorrow’s rising stars. Greenburger was also very interested in writers in the literary sense, as his father was a literary agent. The residency expanded to include residencies for writers, musicians, architects, and dancers, with a park for sculpture and architecture added to the sixty-acre property in Columbia County, the Berkshires, and the Albany area. The breathtaking beauty and serenity of the area remind me of the idyllic regions of Bavaria and Austria, with charming village names such as Kinderhook and Germantown. A particularly outstanding group of artists took part in this year’s Art Omi with the help of grants. For example, Oscar Debs, originally from Lebanon, is a recipient of the Francis J. Greenburger Fellowship for Mitigating Religious and Ethnic Conflict. During his Art Omi residency, he worked with the concept of the arc at the intersection between two carbon torches in a motion picture projection. Altynai Osmoeva, "Dinar: Bread is Gold", hanging sculpture, handmade flatbreads (7 pieces), gold foil, and felt Collection Art Omi, 2023, photo by Altynai Osnoeva. Sandra Carol Lapage, of Brazil, a Pollock Krasner Foundation and Repaint History Artist Fund grant recipient, repurposed aluminum trays and empty coffee capsules to create large floating sculptures, reminiscent of Cai Quo Quiang’s Phenix, made from garbage from construction sites in China. Altynai Osmoeva, of Kyrgyzstan, a grant recipient of the Larkin Dawn Fellowship, questions how historical tradition and cultural heritage can translate into the present day and how the women of her country were highly regarded for achieving a perfect circle with handcrafted plates and rolling dough for bread. Upon entering the grounds of the prestigious Watermill Center’s 31st summer benefit this year, visitors were directed where to go by the Bear character from Robert Wilson’s adaptation of the surrealist play, UBU. Indeed, one needs directions, as the Watermill Center comprises some ten acres of landscaped grounds, a sculpture collection, 20,000 square feet of multi purpose interiors with artist residencies, a theater production archive, a library and outdoor stages. This clever, playful gesture set the tone for the event, right from the start. The Watermill Center was founded 1992 by Robert Wilson as a laboratory for the arts. Performance artists come from all over the world to make art in its residences. Stemming from a strong association with performance, the 2023 Annual Summer Benefit centered on the role of the body in art making (The Body). On the way to the main building, lit by glowing torches that competed with the sunset, cast bronze sculptures by American Liz Glynn (The Myth of Singularity), a Watermill Center resident in 2022, lined the pathway, appearing like guardians of Dante’s Inferno, or a darker version of the Bourgeois of Calais by Rodin. These were followed by Afra Al Dhaheri’s (Abu Dhabi) organic sculpture made of thick threads, growing out of a tree, forming big petals of wool on the grass (Tangle, Untwist, Rewind — Sweat for Years to Come). Climbing up stairs to the main building, the visitor encounters performance artist Leah Merojević (South London. based in Berlin) staging a dance performance called The Second Body – created by Ola Maciejewska (Poland, France) - half-nude, winding around, gliding on and encircling a large melting piece of ice in an open space in the center of the main building. This led to a large open area, covered in gravel, where a police-car with sirens on, is seen being dismembered by several local mechanics, hand drills and sparks flying. Performance artist Regina Jose Galindo (Guatemala), who orchestrated this provocative performance, first sat in the car, then later stood in the midst of its dismembered car parts strewn onto the gravel around her, thereby reducing this iconic image of the ubiquitous police car to less than the sum of its parts. Galindo is known for her politically involved body art since being featured in the Venice Biennial in 2001, for which she was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Young Artist in 2005. She focuses on human rights issues and reflects on social, political, and cultural violence that has affected and still affects her native Guatemala. On a lighter note, several dancers from different companies, not artists-in-residence, paid homage to Simone Forti, performing four of her works, incorporating elements of free jazz, with dancers seemingly bumping into each other in an organic flow of movements that was mesmerizing and hypnotic. (Re)Create Residency, founded in 2007 by New York art lawyer and patron of the arts, Gale Elston, stands out for its unique location in the town of Castelnuovo, set in the Asti region of Italy, which dates back to 1000 AD. The medieval castle fortress, from which the town derives its namesake, as well as the surrounding vineyards, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The wine culture has shaped the breathtaking landscape over centuries. This residency is unique in that, while encouraging artists to contemplate and explore, the participating artists are not obliged to create artwork specifically during their residency. In the summer of 2022, Ken Hiratsuka (New York) created a site-specific work, painting a circular mandala-like figure directly onto the stones of the residency terrace in blue and pink colors reflecting the sky. His partner, dancer and choreographer Gloria McLean, made a choreography for herself and a younger dancer, Shipra Saraogi, in response to the surroundings—a wonderful view of the rolling hills covered in vineyards, with castles in the distance—and Hiratsuka’s mystical floor painting. Richard Humann (New York), also an artist-in-residence in 2022, created a sculpture in the form of a birdhouse using very minimalist language. The sculpture, which sits atop a pole out in nature, is outfitted with speakers that project domestic noises, such as a squeaky door hinge, the sound of steps on stairs, and typical kitchen noises. The work relates to communication, perceptions of home life, and the dichotomy of all sentient, social creatures. During her 2022 (Re)Create Residency, Olga Kisseleva (France) continued to develop her Eden project, titled Eden (Re)Create. The artist has for many years worked on the communication of vegetable species through molecular emission. While such communication has been established between trees of the same species, it can also be attributed to different living organisms, notably insects and animals, including, of course, humans. With the help of modern technology, the Eden project transforms encrypted communication into a comprehensive and open network. In Eden (Re)Create, Kisseleva establishes communication among regional vineyards with others in France, such as in Nizza, Grinzane, and Cavour. She also works with white poplar trees in nearby Guarene (Parco d’Arte Sandretto Re Rebaudengo) and connects these with the white poplars in Babyn Yar (Kiev, Ukraine), referencing historical turmoil. Here Kisseleva has created a memory garden by connecting the poplars in Guarene with their poplar brothers in war-torn Ukraine, an artistic gesture of healing through the language of nature. Courtesy 2019 Kehinde Wiley, Black l Rock, Senegal, photo by Mamadou Gomis. The artist residency in the Senegal capital, Dakar, is called Black | Rock. Senegal is the brainchild of Los Angeles-born artist Kehinde Wiley, who currently resides in New York and Beijing. Wiley is known for his naturalistic portraits, most notably for his 2018 presidential portrait of Barack Obama hanging in the National Portrait Gallery. At the age of 19, Wiley traveled via Dakar to Nigeria, where he met his estranged father and experienced a life-changing emotional connection to his African heritage. Some twenty-five years later, in 2014, Wiley founded the artist residency, Black | Rock Senegal, as an upscale haven for artists with all the comfort and amenities of a luxury resort, replete with a status-conferring infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic seaside in Dakar. The residency takes its name from the black volcanic pebbles native to the region. The Black | Rock complex, designed by Senegalese architect Abib Djenne, stands in stark contrast to the dusty roads of the surrounding area dotted with bare, half-built housing blocks and includes an opulent residence for Wiley, three apartments with adjacent studio spaces for visiting artists, as well as a spa, gym, library, and professional chef kitchen. Dakar is home to an abundance of young local talent, including artists, architects, fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, and writers. Inspiration is everywhere, from music to dance to local customs. On the other hand, contemplative silence and quiet time for research and artistic creation can be found inside the spacious artist studios and in the landscape, largely defined by the Atlantic coast. Kehinde Wiley got his first break as an artist-in-residence himself at the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York. This experience—gaining visibility and meeting other artists, curators, and writers—would inspire him to create his own artist residency, following his success as an artist. In its near decade-long run so far, Black | Rock boasts an impressive alumni of artists who have gone on to success in the art world. To name a few: Leonard Pongo (Belgium/Kongo) works in installation, photography, textiles, and video; Pamela Castro (Brazil) works in paintings; Enam Gbewongo (London) works in textiles and performance; Adrian L. Burrell (Oakland, CA) works as a multimedia storyteller; Katherina Olschbaur (Austria, US, California) works in drawings and paintings. The Dakar Biennial 2022 (founded in 1989) showed many of the past residents of Black Rock. Where once the Cedar Tavern in New York or the Café de Flore in Paris served as a gathering point where artists of all backgrounds could meet, exchange ideas, and get inspiration, the proliferation of artist-in-residence programs around the world has taken this need for a human touch, making that essential connection, to a whole new level. - Winds of Windsor, Portugal's Porto
Porto - the nation's modesty and virtue By Ignatious Josephl lmages © Mr Christian Baes (Christianbaes.myportfolio.com). If the southern capital, Lisbon, is most closely associated with the adventurers and explorers whose caravels embarked from its quays, then Portugal’s second largest city, the capital of the north, embodies the nation’s modesty and virtue. It matters little today whether those qualities are innate or imposed. The political and intellectual drive for the discovery attributed to the Portuguese (and the Spanish) in school history books came from the core of Portugal, Porto, whose sobriquet “Invictus” expresses its claim to repelling the armies of Islam at the banks of the River Douro. Porto is not only the centre of the historic Anglo-Portuguese mercantile network that dominates the wine trade, it is also point of departure into the core of Portugal’s national origins in the north. Port wine is not the wine of Porto, vinho verde is. The distinctive language, wine and food that made Portugal what it is come from the region of the Iberian peninsula extending from Á Coruna in Galicia to the mouth of the great Douro, hence the country’s name, essentially a portmanteau combining Galicia and Porto. Although a conservative, even parochial city, Porto is very friendly in a village sort of way (the core city has only about 250,000 inhabitants). The Portuense, residents of Porto, and the Tripeiros, those born in the city, project a discrete but intense local patriotism, glazed by the English-style charm inherited from centuries of intermarriage and interaction. The city and the north as a whole are full of contradictions, too. Its favourite son, Almeida Garrett, introduced Walter Scott and Romanticism to Portugal. Here intense republicanism and mercantile libertarianism combined with a fervent adherence to the Latin Church. Thus Porto always celebrated a volatile marriage of rationality and religious fervour unknown in the rest of the country and the Iberian peninsula as a whole. Walking through this river metropolis I cannot be sure who I will meet. Nearly every nationality prominades in the Rua das Flores or the azulejo-coated entry to the Belle Epoche style Sao Bento railway station. The locals can best be found in the distinctly Portuguese tascas and restaurants on the edges of the central district. These inconspicuous restaurants are known and frequented by the people who actually live and work in the city. Even if many of them have relocated to the edges where accommodation is still affordable, they meet for lunch near their stores, offices and workshops during the week. Fortunately I have been introduced to some of them during my visits. It is in these corners and chambers that one finds the characters who have been shaped by and continue to shape the inscrutable charm of this modest town. As I return from one of those sumptious luncheons, I have to climb another of the city’s innumerable hills. It is there at the top, even at 30 degrees centigrade, that I feel the cool breeze from the Atlantic. The winds of Windsor waft and the ways of the world dispel the urban heat. - Rolls-Royce Droptail commission 1 of 4 unveiled
Rolls-Royce Droptail commissions, the first is named ‘La Rose Noire’ First of four unique Rolls-Royce Droptail commissions, named ‘La Rose Noire’ Inspired by romance and the allure of the Black Baccara rose Incorporates most complex expression of parquetry in Rolls-Royce history 1,603 wood pieces hand-finished and hand-placed over almost two-year period New exterior paint process required 150 iterations to perfect Matching Champagne Chest commissioned to stage client’s exclusive vintage Features wearable Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept timepiece “Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is a love story, thoughtfully captured and stunningly projected onto the canvas of a Rolls-Royce motor car. It is an expression of the deep and passionate partnership between a husband and wife who are the heads of a prominent international family – to be part of their remarkable story is a privilege. Furthermore, La Rose Noire Droptail stands as a testament to our brand’s relentless pursuit of perfection, where artistry and the vision of a single client truly harmonise. In every detail of this historic commission, there are echoes of both Rolls-Royce’s rich heritage and the commissioning clients’ character, from its captivating yet formidable form to its flawless and elegant romantic gestures. La Rose Noire Droptail, like the remarkable clients who dared to make such a potent and contemporary statement, will be written into Rolls-Royce history forever.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars “Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail stands as one of the most progressive expressions of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild ever conceived. In capturing the romantic and glamorous spirit of the commissioning clients, our design team explored bold new artisanal processes and highly complex creative gestures in their pursuit of a deeply personal language of luxury. The remarkable execution of the wood elements of La Rose Noire Droptail in particular are a clear statement that time-honoured exquisite crafts have a place at the pinnacle of modern design. Indeed, the ambition of the marque’s clients, and the peerless capabilities of its designers signal a long and exciting future for Rolls-Royce Coachbuild and its standing as the leading creative force in applied art at its highest level.” Anders Warming, Design Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars “Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is glamour distilled. The guiding inspiration for this dark, bold and powerful commission was the Black Baccara rose, which was a significant point of affection for the client and a source of fascination for the design team. Its rich and complex character informed our creative exploration, influencing the palette, composition, and intricate detailing of the motor car. It led us to blend radically modern design concepts with age-old exquisite craft techniques, while using materials that subtly reinforce the clients’ deep connection to France. Our shared commitment to shaping a meaningful and progressive design statement have culminated in a deeply significant expression of the patron’s character and a new pinnacle for contemporary craftsmanship.” Alex Innes, Head of Coachbuild Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars LA ROSE NOIRE: THE FIRST DROPTAIL Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is privileged to present Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, a dark, daring and dramatic coachbuilt masterpiece. This extraordinary motor car, presented to the clients who commissioned it at a private event close to Pebble Beach in California today, symbolises the distillation of experiences, significant moments and objets d’art cherished by its owners – an international family that exemplifies connoisseurship and luxury of the very highest order. Indeed, Coachbuild designers described the family’s talent for sensitive and informed curation in their homes and within their notable collection of motor cars and fashion icons, as an art form unto itself. Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is inspired by the allure of the Black Baccara rose, an intense, velvet-like flower that originates in France and is beloved by the mother of the commissioning family. The dark pomegranate colour of its petals appears almost black in shade, but in direct light, a red, pearlescent shimmer is revealed on the dark surface. These two colours form the primary palette of La Rose Noire Droptail. The first red shade is named ‘True Love’ in recognition of the romance the client wished to capture in this commission. The darker tone is named ‘Mystery’, inspired by the mysterious nature of the rose, which appears to change colour when viewed from different angles. Indeed, it was the essence of true love and the mystery of exploration and travel that captivated the clients throughout the commissioning process. The exterior coachwork is finished in the lustrous and complex True Love red. Like the Black Baccara rose, the motor car also appears to change colour depending on the point it is examined from. To achieve this rich variation, surface finish specialists developed a completely new paint process, which was perfected over 150 careful iterations. A base coat, the colour of which is a closely guarded secret, was followed by five layers of clear lacquer, each blended with a slightly different tone of red. The duotone theme extends into La Rose Noire Droptail’s brightwork. The dark finish, named Hydroshade due to its liquid quality, was developed specifically for this project. These pieces are not painted; rather, a specific chrome electrolyte is introduced in the chrome plating process and co-deposited on each stainless-steel substrate in a layer just one micron thick – roughly the same width as a strand of spider-web silk. This dark but reflective finish is continued on select metal details throughout the interior, each of which have been precision-polished by hand to achieve a high-gloss finish. A removable hard top has been designed to give Droptail two distinct characters: without its roof Droptail is a lithe, open-top roadster; with the roof installed, it becomes a formidable and dramatic coupé. Exclusively for La Rose Noire, the roof is uniquely low-slung, which is further exaggerated with a faster and longer rake to underpin its assertive, glamourous character. Behind it, an ingot with the motor car’s name is included – a first for Rolls-Royce. The completely Bespoke roof also features an electrochromic glass section, which instantly transitions to a near-translucent shade at the touch of a button, inviting patrons to explore the world above. The commissioning clients’ passion for detail is exemplified on La Rose Noire Droptail’s Pantheon grille vanes. In a discreet embellishment, True Love paint is hand-applied as an accent on the reverse surface of the vanes themselves – a refined detail that is only visible by way of indirect reflection. This subtle flourish continues into the intricate lower front air intake. This highly detailed piece was digitally designed and 3D printed in a lightweight composite and incorporates 202 hand-polished stainless-steel ingots, each hand-painted in the True Love hue. A significant exterior element is the treatment of the striking alloy wheels, which feature the dark Mystery paint finish. Like the flower itself, from afar the finish appears to be black, but upon closer examination, the sunlight reveals shimmering dark red undertones. The Mystery paint is applied to the entire surface of the rim and then, through a high-precision diamond milling process, areas of the paint are removed to expose accents of the base alloy material that are then polished. This treatment emphasises the directional nature of the wheel and its bold 22-inch size, underpinning this Droptail’s formidable personality. LA ROSE NOIRE: GLAMOUR DISTILLED The most remarkable element of this extraordinary motor car is its cocooning interior. This reveals the most complex expression of parquetry ever created at Rolls-Royce – the product of nearly two years of development, intense experimentation and hand craftsmanship. The artwork represents an abstract expression of falling rose petals, formed using 1,603 pieces of black wood veneer triangles. The highly complex pattern is formed with 1,070 perfectly symmetrical elements forming the background, and 533 asymmetrically positioned red pieces representing the rose petals. The asymmetry was requested by the clients to represent a natural, organic ‘scattering’ of petals. Made from Black Sycamore wood sourced in France as a subtle tribute to the French provenance of La Rose Noire, each triangle is cut, sanded and precisely positioned by hand. The pieces that appear to be stained light and dark grey are in fact presented in their natural hue; the colour difference is achieved by using veneer from several logs with different ‘figures’ – the natural pattern on the veneer. Paint was used only to create the red pieces – to avoid the colour fading over time, the marque’s artisans spent a year developing a new lacquer formula to protect this extraordinary projection of contemporary craft. This intricately detailed and embracing piece envelopes the motor car’s occupants, stretching from the rear shawl panel through the doors and onto the expansive fascia. Its assembly required such intense concentration that the single craftsperson tasked with creating it could only work in one-hour sessions for no more than five hours total per day, to ensure they maintained the focus required for perfect execution. The artisan, who has been with Rolls-Royce since their apprenticeship, spent weeks working in absolute silence in a sound-insulated space to mitigate against any potential distractions. To create what is unquestionably a work of art in its own right took more than nine months in total. Resolving the interior, La Rose Noire Droptail’s two seats are decorated at the edges with both dark red Mystery leather, and light red True Love leather, each finished with a subtle copper shimmer, evoking the pearlescent texture of the Black Baccara rose petals. A SINGULAR TIMEPIECE The fascia of Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is provisioned with an integrated one-off timepiece by Audemars Piguet, which was specially commissioned by the client. The 43mm Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date is powered by a unique self-winding Calibre 4407 movement, featuring a flyback chronograph and a split-seconds mechanism. Masterfully matched to La Rose Noire’s colourway, it incorporates red counters and a red inner bezel, providing a bright contrast to the black ‘openworked’ dial highlighted with rhodium-toned bevels. Integrating the timepiece presented a significant challenge: the clients requested that it should both be mounted in the motor car and also be removable, so that it can be attached to a strap and worn. This was realised with a powered clasp mechanism that gently presents the timepiece at the touch of a button. Once the timepiece has been removed, the aperture in the fascia is covered with an elegant titanium openworked blank head watch highlighting a white-gold coin displaying a rose engraving, hand-sculpted by Audemars Piguet artisans. Subtle rose engravings on the motor car’s Bespoke Audio speaker frets mirror this motif. Each of the pieces were meticulously crafted by hand in the Swiss brand’s atelier and represent the only literal expressions of the Baccara Rose in the whole motor car. A slim, soft leather pouch in the door paniers houses the strap and the blank head watch while the timepiece is displayed in the fascia. A COMMISSION TO CELEBRATE To celebrate their Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, the owners commissioned an exclusive vintage of Champagne de Lossy, one of their favourite wine properties. This is of particular significance given the special wine created for La Rose Noire Droptail is one of only a precious handful of vintages produced by the Chateau in its 160-year history. As the perfect staging point, the commissioning family requested a unique Rolls-Royce Champagne Chest. Appointed with matching rose petal parquetry and coordinated to match the colour palette and materials of the motor car, it is the product of the same meticulous attention to detail as the clients’ coachbuilt Rolls-Royce. At the press of a button, the Champagne Chest opens, revealing an intricate champagne set replete with hand-blown crystal champagne flutes. The exterior lid converts to a serving tray made of bookmatched open pore Black Sycamore wood with a design of the Chateau central to the brushed and laser-cut stainless-steel inlay. The sides are adorned with the same intricate parquetry work as La Rose Noire Droptail. Once deployed, they reveal two hammocks cradling the clients’ special edition Champagne de Lossy, designed to match the motor car’s colour scheme. Stored thermal champagne coolers, made from black anodised aluminium and carbon fibre, are finished in the dark Mystery hue and ensure the champagne is maintained at the optimum drinking temperature. LA ROSE NOIRE DROPTAIL: TAKING ITS PLACE IN THE ROLLS-ROYCE LEGEND This bold and historic motor car is a romantic celebration of the couple who created it, characterised by passion and a restless desire for meaningful experiences. In commissioning this extraordinary expression of Droptail, this remarkable family has not only shaped their own legacy but also participated in the legend of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. CHART’s activities include: an art fair, an art book fair, a broad public programme of talks and performances, an architectural competition, an off-site sculptural exhibition in the amusement park Tivoli Gardens and an online editorial platform highlighting new contributions to art writing in the region. Taking place at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in the heart of Copenhagen, CHART 2023 brings together 37 exhibitors from across the Nordic region, creating a single-entry point into the region's gallery scene. Building on Copenhagen’s strongholds of art, design, and architecture, CHART explores artistic crossovers and brings the arts community together in all its diversity. CHART is located at Charlottenborg, home of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, in the heart of Copenhagen, and was founded in 2013 by five leading Copenhagen-based galleries; Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Andersen’s, Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, David Risley Gallery and V1 Gallery. Tivoli Gardens - Tivoli Building on Copenhagen’s stronghold of art, design and architecture, CHART 2023 will present an art fair, an art book fair and a public programme of talks, performances and architectural projects. Going against the grain of the global mega fairs, CHART gathers the entire ecosystem of the Nordic art scene to celebrate the local market and community in all its diversity. CHART, as a non-profit organisation, emphasises Nordic values that both shape and go beyond aesthetics; social awareness, democratic principles, forward thinking and collaborative practices. CHART, a snapshot of the Nordic art scene This year’s art fair will feature presentations by 37 exhibitors from across the Nordic region, including a new wave of Nordic female-led galleries such as palace enterprise (DK), Saskia Neuman Gallery (SE), Sharp Projects (DK), Þula (IS), Isca Gallery (NO) and Galleri Cora Hillebrand (SE). The fair will also showcase 8 young galleries, artist-run and alternative exhibition spaces in the Please Notice section of the fair including NEVVEN (SE) and Lagune Ouest (DK). CHART will also showcase a unique collaboration between Kunsthall Oslo and Khartoum Contemporary Art Center (KCAC), who will jointly participate in the art fair with artists from KCAC's programme. KCAC is a conceptual art initiative, imagined by the artists Fadlabi and Karin Erixon, which aims to foster emerging artists from Africa and the Middle East, particularly Sudan. The Center took a physical form as a gallery and late-night bar in Oslo from 2017-2022, with a Pan-Africanist programme of exhibitions and events. Following the closure of KCAC's physical location, KCAC will collaborate with Kunsthall Oslo on a presentation at CHART 2023 that reaches from Luleå to Addis Ababa. CHART in Tivoli, a 3-year partnership Following the success of the first edition of CHART in Tivoli in 2022, CHART announces a 3-year collaboration with Tivoli Gardens, that will see a brand new exhibition of site-specific artworks presented inside the iconic amusement park, for 1 month every summer from 2023 to 2025. CHART in Tivoli reimagines the traditional exhibition format by integrating art into the historic fabric of Tivoli Gardens. Throughout the month-long exhibition from August to September, visitors will encounter captivating site-specific sculptures, installations, and video works nestled alongside Tivoli's world-famous rides. The 2023 exhibition in Tivoli Gardens will launch on 24 August, to coincide with the opening of CHART, and will run until 24 September. The project continues CHART’s mission of being an agent of positive change, challenging the traditional art fair format and bringing contemporary art to new audiences. CHART in Tivoli will feature new works by a diverse line up of 16 international emerging and established artists. Exhibiting artists include: Magnus Andersen (DK) Anna Fasshauser (DE) FOS (DK) Klara Kristalova (SE) Georg Nordmark (SE) Hanne Tyrmi (NO) Benedikte Bjerre (DK Cecilia Fiona (DK) Ellen Hyllemose (DK) Auður Lóa (IS) Harrison Pearce (UK) Andreas Eriksson (SE) Sylvie Fleury (CH) Inka & Niclas (SE/FI) Jonathan Meese (DE) Oliver Sundqvist (DK) "CHART in Tivoli speaks to the core of our mission to bring the best of contemporary art in the Nordics out into the public space. With this new 3-year collaboration, we are excited to re-shape and re-define the space for contemporary art in our society today, making it more accessible and more inclusive for everyone." – Julie Quottrup Silbermann, Director, CHART A new programme spotlighting ‘conscious collecting’ Under the leadership and vision of CHART’s new director Julie Quottrup Silbermann, CHART 2023 will expand the conversation around the idea of ‘conscious collecting,’ through a dedicated programme of curated talks as well as a new exhibition featuring artworks accessible for first-time collectors. Through the programme, CHART hopes to provide more transparency around purchasing processes and to shine a light on the social and cultural benefits of collecting as well as the moral responsibilities involved. Start Collecting with CHART, a new exhibition in the foyer of Kunsthal Charlottenborg, will invite each of the participating galleries at CHART to present a single artwork by an established artist from their roster, priced below a fixed threshold of 20,000 DKK (2700 EUR). All of the prices in the exhibition will remain transparent and the exhibition will be open to the public, providing an opportunity for wider audiences to engage in collecting and support cultural production in the Nordics. “Throughout time, collectors have played an important role in supporting artists and thus the entire artworld ecosystem. Subjective decision-making and experience of course often play a role in collecting, but I want to open up the discussion around the commercial art world, as a whole, to add insight and transparency about who is collecting, how they are doing it and why." – Julie Quottrup Silbermann, Director, CHART Dedicated to bringing together the arts community across disciplines CHART has expanded the concept of the art fair into an event that incorporates architecture, design and book publishing, public programmes that reach a wide audience, and a year-round presence through its digital platform, CHART Journal. The tradition of a generous public programme continues with performances and music acts in the courtyards of Charlottenborg, free and open for everyone, that turns CHART into a celebration of the arts in the heart of Copenhagen. For the first time this year, a series of free public performances will also be staged on the square at Kongens Nytorv during CHART. CHART 2023 will also bring the return of CHART Book Fair for its third edition, taking place in Festsalen at Charlottenborg. The Book Fair creates a unique meeting point between the independent Nordic publishing community and the more established arts community of galleries, collectors and museums, to highlight printed matter by leading publishers from across the region. Showing its dedication to collaboration and sustainability, CHART presents an architecture competition for teams of emerging architects, often in collaboration with designers and artists. This year’s theme is New European Bauhaus foregrounding the New European Bauhaus’s core principles of aesthetics, inclusion and sustainability. 5 proposals for innovative architectural structures, shortlisted by the jury, will be realized in the historic courtyards of Charlottenborg during CHART. Here they will provide social space or host bars and restaurants from some of Copenhagen's leading culinary establishments. The winner of the CHART Architecture competition will be announced on 25 August. This year’s jury includes: Gert Wingårdh, owner and creative director of Wingårdhs; Camilla Ryhl, head of the Universal Design Hub; Anders Lendager, founder and partner at Lendager; Ebbe Stub Wittrup, contemporary artist; Lise Gandrup Jørgensen, partner and project director at Dorte Mandrup; and Rong Guan, designer and in-house architect at Polestar.
