Elisa Battistini, founder of Ivarene Inspired by women, nature and organic forms IVARENE jewels are all handmade in Paris with a natural and casual elegance. Each piece is hand strewn and mounted in the tradition of classic pearls using carefully selected precious and semi-precious stones from around the world. Each piece is as unique as its captor. • FENG J: "When jewelry meets ballet"

FENG J. High Jewellery brand is founded by FENG J, a prominent high jewelry artist from mainland China to the world. Feng J. two pairs of High Jewellery earrings. All images courtesy of Feng J. Feng J.'s visionary approach to high jewelry is brought to life in her Place Vendôme atelier and Shanghai studio, where she produces extraordinary, one-of-a-kind treasures on par with the top jewelry houses in the world. This January 2023, Opera de Paris and AROP (Friends of the Paris National Opera) joined Sotheby’s Paris for an exceptional event, “Auction for action, Bid for creation!” The sale held inside at Grand Fayer Palais Garnier, for the benefit of creation and the sharing of art with all. The art jeweler Feng J from Mainland China had the honor of donating her art work "Coeur Blanc" and successfully selling it with other offered lots, including luxury experiences from Chanel Haute Couture to Rolex, Chaumet, Prada, and Gagosian Gallery Paris, among the featured 34 lots estimated from EUR8k to lot no. 23 artwork by Anselm Kiefer sold at auction for EUR436,000. "For me, the Palais Garnier is a spiritual monument because I engage in artistic activities. Through this donation, I hope to show that there is a link between creating a ballet and creating jewelry: it is a tribute to humanity." said Feng J. When jewelry meets ballet Through the introduction of Opera de Paris, Feng met the renowned film director James Bort, who shot a series of short films for such famed houses as Hermes, Piaget, Balmain, etc. Monsieur Bort’s wife, Dorothée Gilbert, is also an Étoile, the most prestigious dancer of Opera de Paris. Monsieur Bort was very dedicated on this shoot, not only for his passion for ballet but also for his tremendous appreciation for Feng J’s art jewelry: "A piece of art jewelry is another kind of expression of the spirituality of humanity, same as what ballet does." Première Danseuse Bleuenn Battistoni of the Paris Opera Ballet holding the Feng J ‘Blooming Dragonfly Diva’ brooch. The story of the film was "When Jewelry Meets Ballet’, which was inspired by Feng J’s Day Dream, a mental adventure tour at the Palais Garnier. Four elite ballet dancers from Opera de Paris, Guillaume Diop, Bleuenn Battistoni, Mickal Lafon, and Adèle Belem, were lined up with Feng J as prestigious casting to perform in the film. Two versions of 1.5 minutes and 45 seconds and a series of portraits are the fabulous results of this project. THE ART WORKS Two signature pieces created by Feng J, "Blooming Dragonfly Diva" and "A Dragonfly Wearing Moonlight," were inspired by the poetic interpretation of ballet dancers from the Opéra de Garnier. Feng J also loves to use the motif of the dragonfly for her creations; she considers the dragonfly to be the natural dancer on earth, elegant yet effortless. ‘A Dragonfly Wearing Moonlight’ artwork by Chinese jeweller Feng J. In these two pieces, by envolving her recognizable "Floating Set" technique into a new stage, the "Standing Mounting," brought to life by Feng J, is rather daring to mount stones in a vertical way and erecting from different angles, to open a new window for developing possibilities of jewelry mounting, in both an aesthetic and crafting way. It’s merely an attitude to disrupt oneself from conservatives who believe that creativity stands for anything possible, just as ballet is a salute to the civilization of humanity. Feng J ‘Blooming Dragonfly Diva’ brooch with ‘Floating Set’ double rose-cut gemstones and the innovative ‘Standing Mounting’ technique to create a painterly style. On March 15th, 2022, Feng J’s "Feuille de Ginkgo" brooch was accepted as one of the permanent collections in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, which made her the youngest jeweler to have art work appear in this prestigious art institution. In 2016, Feng established her art jewelry brand in Paris. Feng’s creative mind when designing art jewelry is painting with gemstones, as if the impressionist painted the light, hue, and shadow. Her painterly style is originally creative, with very creative color combinations from "double rose-cut" gems to give a sense of cutting-edge aesthetic. The "Floating Set" technique is an innovation from Feng; its non-metal-base structure allows gemstones to seem incredibly floating in the air, letting the light go through the jewelry maximum and making the jewelry less weight. Feng J., artist jeweller Feng has frequently exhibited at exclusive art fairs, including La Biennale des Antiquaires Paris 2022, PAD London, Salon Art+Design (New York), Design Miami, and ART021. Her jewelry works are sought after by celebrities and art connoisseurs around the globe. ---------- In January 2023, Chinese art jeweller Feng J contributed one of her unique creations to Sotheby’s Paris to raise funds for Opéra Garnier. From this moment, an appreciation flourished between Feng and renowned director James Bort. Together, they have produced an enchanting film that transports us to a dreamland of high jewellery, opera and ballet, including signature pieces with innovative settings and craftsmanship. Let’s take a trip to the ballet together… "Opéra de Paris" auction hosted by Opéra National de Paris, AROP (Friends of the Paris National Opera) and Sotheby's Paris in January 2023. The occasion was designed to raise funds for Palais Garnier (also known as Opéra Garnier), the French home of music and ballet, first built in the late 19th century at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III. Feng J donated a special piece to this worthy cause - ‘Coeur Blanc’ – a piece of pure art crafted at her atelier in white enamel, double rose- and brilliant-cut grey, purplish grey and black spinels that echoes her dynamic, avant garde style, coupled with an original drawing of the unique piece. Through the auction event, Feng was introduced to renowned director James Bort, who has created fabulous campaign films for Hermes, Piaget, and Balmain, among others. His wife, Dorothée Gilbert, is a principal ballet dancer at the highest 'Étoile' level at the Paris Opera Ballet, which means he has a unique sensibility for the craft of ballet and artistic performance. Their conversations led to an idea – to blend the universes of jewellery and ballet into a short film featuring esteemed ballet dancers of the Paris Opera House. Just a handful of months later, the film was brought to life, directed by Bort and featuring four incredible talents: Guillaume Diop (Étoile), Bleuenn Battistoni (Première Danseuse), Mickaël Lafon (Corypheus), and Adèle Belem (Quadrille). It tells the story of Feng visiting the Palais Garnier and being transported into a daydream of dancers who appear like magical illusions within the walls of the historic opera house. In addition to the short film, eight portraits were also commissioned of the elite dancers holding and wearing unique Feng J creations, including the 'Blooming Dragonfly Diva' and the 'Dragonfly Wearing Moonlight'. The dragonfly is an important reference point for Feng J and a recurring theme in her jewels. She describes the winged insect as a "natural dancer" because of the way it dips and darts through the air with such lightness. There are clear parallels with ballet dancers, whose graceful movements can sometimes appear gravity-defying! She's produced two special pieces to interpret the physicality of ballet dancers in her own way: the pink-hued 'Blooming Dragonfly Diva' inspired by the Première Danseuse, Bleuenn Battistoni, and a more masculine blue iteration – 'A Dragonfly Wearing Moonlight' – using Guillaume Diop, the first black person to reach the rank of Étoile in the history of the Paris Opera Ballet, as the original inspiration. In terms of construction, ‘A Dragonfly Wearing Moonlight’ did not start with the traditional method of carving wax before casting. Feng created the piece like an artist sculptor, using titanium, copper and gold to produce a framework in perfect harmony, like individual dancers working together to create something beautiful. The piece is finished with silver powder to evoke the shimmering of a lake beneath the night sky. In both pieces, we can see Feng J's recognisable 'Floating Set' technique, which uses an extraordinarily lightweight skeleton structure to make double rose-cut gemstones appear as if they are poised in mid-air. Her palette of gem hues is also notable for its similarity to Impressionist art – almost like a watercolour painting – which is why Feng J is described as mastering a "painterly style" in high jewellery. However, these two creations are special for a different reason. They demonstrate an elevated gemstone setting style and innovation from the Feng J atelier: the 'Standing Mounting'. Especially in the ‘Blooming Dragonfly Diva’ we see gemstones that are not laid flat but rather set vertically and facing outward at varying angles. These individual ‘standing’ gems are placed in cluster-like structures, as if myriad pastel-hued petals are blooming and growing in real-time, just like in the natural world. The ‘Standing Mounting’ innovation has the effect of adding volume and dimension to each piece without adding unnecessary weight. This is yet another example of how Feng J pushes the boundaries of high jewellery design while maintaining her romantic and whimsical aesthetic. • MB&F unveils Paris exclusive watch collection

MB&F collaborates with Laurent Picciotto for Paris exclusive LMX Paris Edition Laurent Picciotto wears the LMX Paris Edition. All images courtesy of MB&F. Laurent Picciotto, founder of the legendary Chronopassion boutique in Paris – met Maximilian Büsser when he created MB&F in 2005, he needed the support of a few retailers who would accept to place orders for our very first Horological Machine No.1, two years in advance – and, more challenging, to pay 30% of those orders up front! Laurent – a true pioneer and ambassador of independent watchmaking – was one of just six retail partners who took this leap of faith. Fast-forward 17 years later, to 2022, and Laurent opens one of very first MB&F LABs in the world, on rue Saint-Honoré. To mark this exceptional friendship, MB&F has created a special edition together, available exclusively at the Parisian location: the LMX ‘Paris Edition’, with a purple sunray dial plate, in an 18k white gold case, limited to just 15 pieces. “If I were to give a name to the LMX Paris Edition, I would undoubtedly call it the ‘LMX Deep Purple’ in reference to the famous 1968 rock group – this piece is definitely rock ’n’ roll!”, says Laurent. The original LMX celebrated 10 years of Legacy Machines; it was essentially a supercharged version of the first Legacy Machine, an LM1 on steroids. The LMX features the same signature flying balance wheel, along with two dials of stretched white lacquer, each with its own fully independent time display – but unlike the first Legacy Machines, both dials are tilted at an angle, requiring the transfer of energy from horizontal to vertical planes thanks to conical gears. In another nod to the world-first vertical power reserve indicator of LM1, LMX features a three-dimensional display that showcases the engine’s impressive seven days of power reserve – with the option to select between two modes. Two markers are positioned on opposite sides of a hemisphere; one framed by an arched scale numbered 1 to 7, another with a scale showing the 7 days of the week. The LMX Paris Edition is available exclusively at Chronopassion in Paris. Retail price is EUR 122,000 before taxes (= EUR 146,400 including VAT). • Dua Lipa and Donatella Versace unveil The "La Vacanza" fashion show in Cannes

The "La Vacanza" fashion show will begin imminently and can be accessed via the livestream link below. The collection will be available to purchase immediately following the show. Lipa and Donatella Versace, the label’s creative director since 1997, began working together in 2018 after the pop sensation wore a daring leotard and denim jacket combination for her first ever Brit Award performance. The rest, the pair said during a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the show, was history. The collection — which debuted poolside at a topiary-filled villa in Cannes on Tuesday evening — was an intimate affair and timed to coincide with the world’s most extravagant film festival. Invitees mainly consisted of influencers and Gen Z-friendly musicians including Troye Sivan, Rina Sawayama and Peggy Gou (though F1 racer and fashion luminary Lewis Hamilton made an appearance). British model Rosie Huntington-Whitely was the only Cannes attendee who made it to the show as a guest. Dua Lipa's first collection for Versace was heavily inspired by the brand's archives, particularly designs from the 1990s. The Italian fashion house has long understood that fashion is about more than just clothes. For the late founder Gianni Versace — and his sister Donatella — the priority has always been celebrity, spectacle and engineering moments to transcend the industry and become pop culture history. Who could forget the risqué emerald green jungle dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000s Grammys that prompted tech engineers to create Google Image Search? Irina Shayk, the sweatpant-loving supermodel on breaking red carpet rules Inspired by Versace’s storied archives from the 1990s, the resort collection — an industry term referring to clothes produced outside of the traditional Spring-Summer, Fall-Winter seasons — began in October with Lipa sending Donatella sketches of her vision. “I really can’t draw at all,” the singer said at the press conference in Cannes. “It was enough!” chimed Donatella, who emphasized Lipa’s involvement in the entire creative process (“from A to Z.”) Versace is not the only brand tapping into the power of high-profile co-designers — specifically musicians. Earlier this month Erykah Badu released a collection with Italian house Marni, and Blackpink’s Jennie Kim unveiled a capsule collection with Calvin Klein. In March, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing collaborated with Beyonce to release 16 couture looks inspired by her acclaimed 2022 album “Renaissance.” There was an unmistakable undercurrent of Barbiecore throughout the collection. Versace Out on the runway, the sartorial sensibility of “La Vacanza” was bright, blithe and unmistakably Barbie-coded (Lipa features on the soundtrack for Greta Gerwing’s upcoming “Barbie” movie, and wore Versace to tease the track to her 88 million Instagram followers on Monday). There were faux metal-mesh dresses in aquamarine, miniskirts adorned with embellished butterflies and fluorescent capri leggings. When asked for the meaning behind the collection, Lipa gave an answer that could have been a tagline for Mattel’s Barbie’s Summer Beach range: “The weather’s nice, we want to get dressed and look cute.” Aside from a number of all-black looks, the color palette remained almost exclusively pastel — from powder pink mini dresses adorned with the label’s signature Medusa pendants and Greca key detailing, to sky blue monogrammed suits. “It’s fun, it’s flirty, it’s really the summer colors” said Lipa. According to Lipa, the energy behind the collection is "fun and flirty." Versace Versace is working hard to position itself as the designer to the stars, with its last show taking place in the Hollywood Hills two days before the Oscars (Lady Gaga went onto wear a hot-off-the-runway black gown with low-slung waist and mesh bodice at the red carpet). Instead of relying on traditional celebrity dressing opportunities, Versace’s tactic of holding strategically-timed fashion shows around events such as the Oscars or Cannes capitalizes on the existing spectacle (and media attention) and uses it to their advantage. As the collection was instantly available online, it won’t take long to see if the strategy works for shoppers too. Follow Dior at Cannes on Instagram: #DiorCannes #StarsinDior Diamond 5 Photos: Nicole Buffett Studios, talks about her studios and Zagaday.com. rld What brings you to the majestic Madrid ? Well, what brught me to Madrid was the Jaboy Conference. This is my first time in Spain, and it's such a pleasure to be here. After having met Jaboy and the group, everything has opened up for me to experience Madrid and give a speech at the event. I live on a 2-acre farm, and I have kind of attempted to develop my own art sanctuary there. This community includes an organic farm as well as my art studio and enables me to work in nature when I am not spending time with my family in Los Angeles, so I have the best of both worlds. Web 3 and AI are important topics to you, why? The first panel that I spoke on in Madrid was about Web 3 and AI, how they impact culture globally, and the implications that they have on humanity and our culture. And also how it has had an impact on my work as an artist. I have been pretty immersed in that word since it began, being arguably one of the first traditional artist women to enter this creative space of Web 3, which was really exciting. Thus, transcending my traditional fine art into a digital context has been a really interesting journey for me. How did this opportunity arose? This opportunity arose because of the Club House and the pandemic, which became at that point the only opportunity to connect with people globally, basically exhibit my work in this digital context, and continue my career. From there, it activated my career more; the constraint of the pandemic propelled me to a much greater extent than I would have been inspired to otherwise. My collector base is all over the world, and I started using Twitter for the first time, allowing for direct communication with so many different people and talking about my art. So it was a blessing in disguise. Thus, the website with all the work that I have done over the past two decades, which was already sold, meant that I was in a transition in my career anyway. So it happened that I moved to make NFTs, and this was then happening in real time. I would make NFT collections, which would all sell out. In the first year, three out of four NFT collections immediately sold out. I would also send the original pieces of art to the NFT collectors, and that is something that I have done from the early stages. So this technology became a new layer of my creative technology, and with all the parts of the process related to cryptography and cryptocurrency, as well as organizing and managing my content, it all together became a whole new dimension. (This led to Nicole being listed as one of the Top 50 influencers in the NFT space by Fortune Magazine, alongside Paris Hilton.) Tell us about your process of creative state of mind and creating art? I am getting into the subtle body experience of emotion, using a different emotional intelligence to guide me, and taking decisions without really following my instincts. It can be described as a primordial thought process. I allow myself to process what I shape. I love to start the process with a method that I developed involving water, where I have a white canvas and start by applying water to it. I work in nature, usually with paintings placed flat on the ground; my work is really painting with the forces of gravity. So the painting almost imitates the ground with its surfaces and shadows from the sunlight falling onto it. So the painting is using me to make it. And I design the panels and work with a friend of mine, an amazing carpenter in San Francisco, to cut different shapes in a basic plywood panel that I paint on to give the illusion of surfaces and shapes that are cut out of the space. This is the actual place that I projected on the painting. My works of abstract surrealism have physical dimensions, and the space thus becomes material. What are the key symbols and emotions that you seek to evoke trough art? The shapes that I chose have a lot of meaning. One of the things that I like about abstract art is that it allows the viewer to bring their own meaning and associations to the work, and I like to enable the viewer to enter this subjective world of emotions. And I am not imposing a preconceived idea here, but only proposing the space that I invite you into and inviting them to define their subjective experience of it. African music is also a big part of my work and painting process in the way that it inspires me. I also play an instrument and am planning my first trip to Senegal to attend a music workshop. How did your evolve as a creative individual and artist trough painting? Speaking on the other hand about modernist art and old-school art studios, it is true that in order to do that kind of work, it requires working in a studio as it is more painstaking and more technical, which all combined require more time. And I respect that work, and I am grateful that I have been able to develop myself from the point when I was a figurative painter. As I became more and more trained as a painter as a student of art professors, I also learned from a professor that an artwork is not necessarily more valuable if you spend more time making it. He argues that an artist's whole life experience is projected into a particular work, and it should not be underestimated that even when an artist is not working in his studio, the combined impressions and information from the world around him are influencing the artwork. Thus, everything that happens to me as an artist also becomes part of my work, regardless of time. How does your daily creative process look like? True, sometimes I spend hour after hour working in a studio, and other times it's short and intensive, and there are layers, so I let that sit and dry. I sometimes work on multiple paintings for that reason. I started painting very early, but from high school on, I developed my portfolio and started to paint daily. You recently said that you come from a creative family or "family of artists"? Erica, my twin sister, who is a mother, my best friend, and a jewelry designer, makes pieces that can be used in meditation and are often made of 108 beads. Each collection at Zagady.com supports an environmental or social cause and has an original physical piece attached to it, such as a painting or one of these jewelry creations, that has been paired with a digital asset, such as an image or a video, that the collector can save to their own Web3 wallet. What is the universal message that you wish to send as an individial and as an artist? Speaking about the environment, pandemics showed us that Mother Nature was our savior and that we are nature and part of nature. Furthermore, we, as humanity, are connected as a nuclear family. It is the opposite of the 1960s utopian idea of community that imperatively shares everything, although indeed we are sharing everything, and how we do that and the structures and mechanisms that regulate this through systems of autonomy inside a shared collective are important to understand. This includes not only the resources but also the physical space and financial exchange. This is how we need to think of ourselves as a society that is organized like a nuclear family. With this vision he began a journey of discovery, learning about watchmaking, connecting with manufacturers and refining an intuition for design and presentation. Throughout this pursuit he has offered his passion and the knowledge he has gained to other enthusiasts and brands moving towards the same goal - helping them conceptualise their watch ideas and original movements. I saw flashes of light and dark with a scattering of stars - deep space.” - O.G From the shimmering dial and exclusive movement, to the bevelled buckle and handmade, non-stitch strap - every detail of the Deep Space watch has been carefully considered to make sure its design is homogeneous in allaspects. Deep Space is the first O.G watch series, limited to 10 pieces. Each watch comes with a lifetime warranty, an exclusive look at new models before release, and priority on a future O.G watch of the owner’s choice. GUY-1 MOVEMENT “I’m inspired by many styles of watchmaking but have always found an emotional connection with more classically designed movements - their robust and timeless construction, lasting hundreds of years; treasuries of knowledge displaying techniques forgotten or often neglected by industrial movements. For the O.G brand, the aesthetic of the movement is just as fundamental as the front facing design of the watch.” - O.G The GUY-1 is the first O.G movement, named after the founder’s grandfather Guy, who was an inventor and engineer. It is based on the Swiss Unitas 6498, refined in Glashütte, with some major visual and functional improvements. Featuring a re-modelled mainplate and new bridges including an independent escapement bridge which are decorated with gold perlage, Geneva stripes, polished chamfers and jewel countersinks. Other highlights include mirror polishing on its steel screws, swan-neck regulator, and Glashütte rachet-click system. A screwed balance wheel, crescent-shaped anchor bridge, side-screw mounted dial and a decorated gear train with diamond-bevelled centre wheel. For a full list of features and finishing please refer to the specifications on the O.G website. THE DIAL For purity and simplicity, only the hours and minutes are displayed under a floating chapter ring which is printed on the underside of the front sapphire. This is to add depth and focus to the dial, as each one is special, with its stars engraved by hand. Diagonally brushed and then specially coated, light is reflected like a shower of shooting stars across its surface when tilted, flashing different shades of dark and light. The logo is pad printed in gold over multiple layers. The geometrical hour and minute hands are made in a two-piece construction from titanium and steel, creating a clean contrast between the 0.1mm chamfered, sandblasted bodies and tips. “My Father was a painter and decorator, and my Mother is an artist and writer. Growing up with their creativity continues to stimulate my mind with abstract ideas, where watches become the canvas or story.” - O.G THE CASE Neo-classical in style and a comfortable 41mm in 316L steel - the Deep Space’s case is finished with contrasting polished and sandblasted surfaces to create subtle reflections that chase its curves. It features a large vintage style crown for superior winding and adjustment, and a decagonal screw-down case back with a clear view of the proprietary GUY-1 movement. STRAP & BUCKLE To create a homogeneous design, details and consistency matter. • Alicia Keys, Laetitia Casta, Naomi Watts, at Dior Resort 2024 Show in Mexico City

Alicia Keys Sports Toile Print Two-Piece Set at Dior Resort 2024 Show in Mexico City that featured 92 Frida Kahlo inspired looks with lot of folklore details that ppay hommage to Latin America. This show was if possible even more strong than the recent Mumbai show staged by Dior with great presence from India's VIPs and billionaire families. For this new line Maria Grazia Chiuri has once again forged strong ties with local artisans: original embroideries, co-creations crafted with their ateliers, notably adorn dresses and shirts. A constellation of places that spark emotions – this is what Mexico is to Maria Grazia Chiuri. A “place of the soul,” just as it was for surrealist artists. The emblematic figure of Frida Kahlo continues to offer a powerful connection to this culture, celebrated at the heart of the Dior cruise 2024 collection. The Mexican artist transcended her body through her clothes, which became representation, proclamation, protest, and affirmation. Like a precious jewel case for a broken body, a cocoon-case concealing a butterfly meta-morphed into a motif unfolding in multiple shades and forms, through a series of prints. The captivating beauty of fragility is further enhanced by the variety of cotton, hemp and silk lace selected, by the meticulous designs of the collars sublimating jersey and black velvet, and by irresistibly precious jacquards. The story of a femininity that is constructed by a relationship with the natural environment, in a balance of engagement and light-heartedness. Laetitia Casta. • MacDella Cooper Africa’s Rising Star

A Conversation with One of Africa’s Leading Ladies and Liberian Presidential Aspirant, MacDella Cooper Photos: Liberian Presidential Aspirant, MacDella Cooper MacDella Cooper is an activist, philanthropist, and politician who is currently in the race to become the next President of Liberia. She is a former child refugee of Liberia who defeated the odds and survived life in a war-torn country. Over the years, she has dedicated her time and resources to initiatives that improve the lives of Liberians. As founder of the MacDella Cooper Foundation and the MacDella Cooper Foundation Academy, she tirelessly fights for the rights of others, particularly women and children. MacDella is an outspoken advocate for underrepresented Liberians and promises to deliver the relief Liberians have long hoped for. To address inequities in Liberia’s government, MacDella founded the Movement for One Liberia, a political party dedicated to giving Liberian women, youth, and disadvantaged citizens the opportunity to participate in the government. She expertly balances her successful business endeavors and life as a wife and mother with the needs of impoverished Liberians. To some, she is Madam MacDella Cooper, the political phenom breaking barriers as she amplifies the voices of concerned Liberians in a life-changing way and to others, she is Mama Liberia, a woman with an authentic purpose and a heart for easing the suffering of those around her. Her demeanor uplifts and inspires individuals in every generation. Regardless of how you have come to know her name, there is one thing that is certain, MacDella Cooper is a force to be reckoned with and the change that Liberia deserves. Q: MacDella Cooper, you are in the midst of a challenging Presidential race in Liberia. This is a race you competed in during the 2017 elections; what made you decide to run again this year after being defeated in the previous election? A: My passion for seeing Liberia become one of Africa’s most economically secure countries is not one that will ever end. I was hopeful that the current President would enter office and carry out the promises made to the Liberian people during the 2017 election, but I see that it has not been done. I am ready to come in strong and fix all of the issues that we are facing. Liberia is a country that is more than deserving of better days and I plan to enter into the office of the Presidency and be a leader who is always present and accountable for positive changes in our economy, schools, hospitals, technology, and more. I am ready to give Liberians the chance to live in a country that protects and values them. Q: If elected, what will be the first reform you will propose? A: To see the Liberia we all want, I have to upgrade our education system. As of now, the literacy rate is 62.42% for males and 32.82% for females, which means that working age adults cannot read and write well enough to complete vocational training. When this happens, they live in poverty and do not have a way to buy healthy food, which is why so many Liberians now suffer from declining health. It is all a cycle that the current President keeps Liberians stuck in to maintain his corrupt practices - a nation that can understand what is happening around them can voice their opinion, so their voices are being stifled by keeping education out of their reach. Once I have programs in place to make Liberians more literate, they will be ready to enter training programs that will benefit our country in multiple ways - jobs will be created, we will be able to use our natural resources to make more money that is used to build up Liberia, and the overall health of our people will improve, to name a few. While I am making improvements in education, I will also work with my administration to build a better infrastructure, so educated Liberians who are ready to work will have a way to get to and from places of employment and shopping centers. From there, Liberians can expect to see improvements in all sectors - education, economic development, healthcare, innovation and technology, and the justice system. Q: In your opinion, what is the key to turning your vision for Liberia into reality? A: I am a leader who hears and understands the suffering of Liberians and is willing to change it. I have lived through what they are going through and know the strength it takes to come out of that place of pain and suffering. I also know that it takes help from others at times, so I am going to use the relationships I have maintained over the years with investors and business leaders to bring help into Liberia. But before I can accept money from investors, I have to make sure that corruption has been removed from our government. I will not allow money from investors to profit lawmakers while Liberians suffer from poverty and despair. From the start of my Presidency, corrupt leaders will be replaced with leaders who will govern the laws of the land appropriately and protect the wellbeing of every Liberian. I will have a zero-tolerance policy for corrupt practices and will not waste any time unraveling the layers of corruption created by the current administration. Q: You often express concern about the future of Liberia’s economy and mention that investors will play a part in economic revitalization; how are you going to manage influence from investors, particularly those from other countries? A: I understand that some Liberians are concerned about having investors from other countries come in and create businesses, but I can promise them that this is our country now, and will remain our country after I am in office. I will not allow any investor to come into Liberia and take away our citizens’ rights to earn a good income. Investors will comply with the laws of Liberia and will not harm our country. I have carefully sourced business leaders and investors from around the world who have a heart for helping others and as such, I will only work with those who agree to allow Liberians the right to be trained to operate the new businesses being formed - the goal is to have Liberians live better and contribute to making Liberia a better country in every way. Our access to safe drinking water and reliable electricity will be some of the benefits that Liberians will see, in addition to state-of-the-art schools that show our kids how to prepare for life in the real world. My role as President is to secure business deals that protect and add value to the lives of the people of Liberia, not take it away. Q: There has been an ongoing debate as to whether women have been given a fair chance to participate in Liberia’s government. Tell us where you stand on this issue. A: Women, young people, and people living with disabilities are underrepresented in every area of government in Liberia. We are behind the times when it comes to having equal representation in our government. When the current President was elected, women held 11.7% of the seats in government and men held 88.3%. Now, six years after he has been in office, women hold 9.7% of the seats in government and men hold 90.3%. This means that men are still the primary decision makers on every issue, even those related to women’s rights and roles in society. A democracy is not supposed to operate this way - every Liberian should be able to look at our leaders and see at least a handful that can speak for them when it comes to making and enforcing laws. When it comes to running a Presidential election campaign, getting support as a female candidate is equally challenging, with many of my male opponents taking advantage of their current dominance to sway voters. Q: Young people are very engaged in politics during this election; how will you keep them engaged if you are elected as President? A: I have always paid close attention to our young people with the understanding that they are our future. What we instill in them is what we will see manifested in our communities years from now, so I take great care to nurture their ability to make informed decisions about the world around them. In 2010, I amplified the voices of young people by founding the MacDella Cooper Foundation Academy. The academy provides free tuition that includes room and board, along with access to enriching educational programs that will help them secure scholarships to study at top colleges and universities. Graduates have done exceedingly well and are encouraged to return home to share their knowledge with the next generation of Liberians. I am also proud to share that graduates of the MacDella Cooper Foundation Academy are internationally recognized performers who successfully passed their West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations. Once I am elected President, there will be similar schools built throughout Liberia and additional curriculum will be added to enhance the overall experience of students. I have strong relationships with global educators who will lend support to the development of programs that teach learners at every age and learning level. Q: Cybersecurity threats are disrupting systems all over the world; do you think it will disrupt the electoral process? A: I believe that Liberia will experience the impact of our systems being disrupted, especially as the election date gets closer. Our technology is not advanced, which puts us at an even greater risk of seeing disruptions as Liberians make their voices heard by voting. There have already been disruptions during live broadcasts of online platforms that invite me to share my voice with the nation. In past years, the threat of poor technology and cybersecurity attacks have been ignored by the current President. It is safe to say that this is being done intentionally - if Liberians are better connected, education and information will flow and the eyes of Liberians will be opened to see the corruption going on. Disruptions might continue to come, but I will not stop using every method I can to make sure that my voice is heard - it is too important not to. I am speaking for every Liberian that needs to feel a change in their lives. Q: Speaking of the election and possible issues, what is your plan to address the rumored voter suppression efforts by opposing political parties? A: As with any change, it starts with education. Every chance I get, I am telling Liberians and the world that our election process is being tampered with. In many parts of Liberia, voters are being lied to and discouraged when they register to vote. During this phase of the election, sharing information is the key to stopping the voter suppression efforts of my opponents. I go back to the statement that men have used their current dominance to gain support from communities in whatever way they can - some are bribing Liberians and others are using fear tactics. What is a Liberian to think when all they see around them is corruption? It is hard to know where to place trust, so many will go with what they know and vote for the candidate who puts the most pressure on them, whether it is good or bad. I am hopeful that as my voice continues to be heard, more Liberians will stand up and pay closer attention to the candidates and demand a fair voting process. Q: What is your overall purpose as a leader? A: My purpose as a leader is to protect and nurture Liberia so we can all see better days. As a leader, I identify the low-hanging fruits and determine if they are the cause of the lapses in progress. If they are, I manage the process of fixing the root of the issue so other parts of the tree can grow. It is a process that involves a balance of leading and nurturing. Having a government that reflects the population is one way to start the process. Next, we work together to create good jobs through educational programs that will lead to better equipped schools, hospitals, and shopping centers. While that is being done, I will make sure the infrastructure is being developed so we can connect more Liberians with the areas outside of their communities. Of course, enforcing the law is an important part of this - I must make sure that Liberians who have been empowered to work outside of their immediate communities are safe throughout their journey and able to return to homes that have been kept safe. My administration will likely enter office with little funds because of the current corruption and will need to come up with innovative ways to address the issues and nurture our country back to good economic health. This is why you will continue to hear me mention the need for investors as we get back on our feet. I will remind you that I am more than a 2023 Presidential candidate, I am the voice of Liberians who have suffered and want a better life. Q: You are a passionate leader with a special focus on education and protection. Does this stem from your childhood experience as a child refugee? If so, what solutions will you put in place to make sure other refugees receive the protection and help they need? A: Yes, it does. Being a refugee was a very dark period of my life. I went from one day to the next not knowing when I would eat or see my mother again. Food was not something I had every day and I was always worried about being raped or beaten. My faith told me that I would live to see better days if I looked beyond my current circumstances and trusted the ones around me who were there to help. We have about 87,000 refugees in Liberia now, and even though they are a small part of our population, they are here with needs that we must fulfill. The same efforts to make Liberians’ lives better will be made to make refugees’ lives better. It will do us no good to leave a part of our population to suffer when we are trying so hard to work together to build a better nation. Refugees are deserving of the same basic rights and necessities as anyone else trying to survive in Liberia, so I will never turn my back on a situation I was once in. Q: How do you view Africa’s future as a whole? A: We must be aware that African nations are each wealthier than Arab Gulf states such as Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. If African nations unite, our future will be a continent with zero debt. As a continent, we are blessed with a brilliant destiny, endowed with the richest human, material, and cultural resources. I will push for us to become an African exporter of capital and a net exporter of aid. This is my aim and should be the aim of all African leaders. Q: Thank you for such transparency. Is there anything you would like to leave our readers with? A: I want everyone, whether living in Liberia or not, to do as I do and see beyond the current condition of our country and trust the process. Have belief that I will come in and be a leader who acts and meets the needs of Liberians. I am ready to change Liberia for the better and put an end to the suffering - we deserve more, and I intend to make sure that we get more.
