The mechanisms for expediting the Industrial Census at the national level were discussed, with the goal of enhancing investment opportunities, as well as analyzing data and using it to chart a roadmap for industrial development. As part of the meeting agenda, IDC discussed the policy for valorizing industrial waste, an initiative to support enhancing the sector's contribution to achieving the UAE's goals in implementing circular economy standards across all sectors. The policy's contribution mechanism was examined in relation to enhancing the competitiveness of national products, reducing production costs, increasing in-country value, boosting the production capacities of industrial facilities, reducing susceptibility to price fluctuations, and enhancing integrated waste management systems across transformative industries. His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of the Industry Development Council, stated: "In line with the vision and directives of our leadership, the UAE's goals, and the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology to enhance the growth and competitiveness of the national industrial sector and increase its contribution to the GDP in support of economic diversification and the achievement of sustainable economic development, we are working to accelerate empowerment, integration, and partnership tools in national projects between the public and private sectors. This aims to enhance the competitive business environment for both local and international investors in the industrial sector and reaffirm the UAE's global position as a leader in future industries." His Excellency emphasized the importance of the topics addressed, including the policy framework for implementing circular economy standards, promoting renewable energy usage, enhancing the competitiveness of national products, and reducing production costs. These factors directly contribute to achieving the forward-looking vision of the wise leadership and the country's direction towards ensuring a sustainable, prosperous future, as well as enhancing efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Al Jaber urged council members to intensify their efforts towards implementing projects, in line with the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology and Make it in the Emirates initiative. His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade and Deputy Chairman of the IDC, said: “In line with our leadership’s forward-looking vision, the UAE continues to develop the industrial sector to increase its contribution to GDP by enhancing the attractiveness of the business ecosystem for both local and international investors. This supports the growth of national industries by enhancing their global competitiveness. It also fosters innovation, attracts skilled global talent, accelerates the adoption of advanced technologies, and draws investment and companies in knowledge- and innovation-based future economy sectors. These efforts contribute to establishing the UAE as hub for future industries.” His Excellency added: “The fifth meeting of the Industry Development Council addressed several key initiatives aimed at achieving national goals to advance the UAE's industrial sector and enhance its global competitiveness. Among these initiatives is the national Industrial Census project and federal law regulating the linkage of distributed renewable energy units to the UAE’s electrical grid, which aligns with the country’s focus on increasing renewable energy usage, lowering emissions, and achieving climate neutrality.” He noted that the Council continues to support integrated national efforts on the federal and local levels, and in collaboration with the private sector, to create a conducive and attractive business environment for both local and international investors in the industrial sector. The Industry Development Council aims to enhance flexibility, integration, and partnerships in the industrial sector at both the federal and local levels. It seeks to provide a suitable business environment for the growth, improvement, and competitiveness of projects on the national, regional, and international levels. Notably, older students, aged 11 and 12, will advance to the cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence curriculum. The bootcamp is being conducted by selected computer science teachers from across the Emirates, who underwent intensive training from Code.org to enhance their skills and ensure they deliver the curriculum effectively to young learners. Dena AlMansoori, e& Group Chief HR Officer said: “As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it's crucial we prepare and empower our youth to define, navigate, and shape it. Coding isn't just a skill; it's the language of tomorrow. Together with Code.org, we aim for every child in the UAE and region to be fluent in it. “Learning how to code taps into multiple key skills such as problem solving, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, resilience, and self-confidence. It is imperative to nurture these skills in our future leaders irrespective of the career path they choose.” In line with the Ministry of Education’s vision, the bootcamp exemplifies the nation’s ambition to lead in the digital realm. e& is deeply committed to advancing STEM education in the UAE, emphasising that coding is vital for all children. Following the notable success of this year’s pilot, "I Speak Code" Bootcamp being held for the children of e& employees, plans are underway for its broader roll-out next year. The programme is targeting to expand locations, increase student participants, and train more teachers in the coming years. As the anchor partner for Code.org in the region, e& will be actively involved with similar initiatives, beginning with the Hour of Code campaign. The ambitious initiative, supported by the Office of AI and the Ministry of Education, aims to encourage all children in the UAE to take their first step into the world of coding. • Veolia inaugurate Oman’s largest solar PV systems for desalination

I Veolia and partners inaugurate Oman’s largest solar PV systems for desalination in the city of Sur Veolia © Oman’s largest solar PV systems for desalination ● The solar plant has annual capacity of over 32,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green and renewable electricity ● The plant will help cut about 27,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year ● The project aligns with Oman 2040 Vision, and Oman’s National Energy Strategy which aims to derive 30% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. H.E. Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al-Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, Sultanate of Oman, has inaugurated the 17-megawatt peak (MWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) farm producing green energy to power the Sharqiyah Desalination Plant in Oman's city of Sur. It is the largest solar system for a desalination plant in Oman with an annual capacity of over 32,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green electricity which will cover 100% of the desalination plant's consumption over the daylight period. Developed by Veolia in partnership with TotalEnergies, the plant is a significant milestone towards decarbonization efforts in the region as it will help cut about 27,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to the emissions generated by approximately 6,000 internal combustion engine-powered vehicles over the same period. The solar plant's construction began in August 2022, and testing was conducted from 30 March 2023 to 15 April 2023. The commercial operation was achieved on 16 April 2023, and the lease agreement for the solar farm operation is until 31 March 2036. Speaking during the event, H.E. Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al-Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, Sultanate of Oman, said: "I am glad to witness the official inauguration of this crucial solar photovoltaic facility at the Sharqiyah Desalination Plant, which serves over 600,000 inhabitants of the Sharqiyah region with clean drinking water. The solar plant aligns well with global efforts towards energy transition for a net-zero world. It will also be one of the significant contributors to water security in Oman and our National Energy Strategy, which aims to derive 30% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030—one of the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. I commend Veolia, its partners, and everyone involved in the development of this plant for their unwavering commitment and hard work in bringing this project to fruition." Philippe Bourdeaux, Vice President Africa, Near & Middle East of Veolia, said: "We are delighted to see that our solar project has started serving its mission. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the leadership in the Sultanate of Oman, particularly the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. We express our gratitude to them and our private sector partners for helping us join local efforts towards energy transition and decarbonization. Veolia aims to be the world leader in ecological transformation. Water and renewable energy are therefore areas of major interest for the Group, and given the mounting issues related to climate change, we have developed real expertise in reducing carbon emissions in our operations and projects. In this journey, renewables play an important role in providing green energy while also ensuring an uninterrupted supply of vital resources for human consumption such as drinking water." The inauguration was attended by Veolia’s and Total Energies senior management and Group’s partners including government officials and representatives of the Sharqiyah Desalination Company SAOG (SDC) and the Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (NPWP). Commenting on the occasion, Denis Le Maout, Chairman of the Board of Sharqiyah Desalination Company SAOG, said: “With desalination capacity of 131,837 cubic metres per day (m3/day), producing over 400 million m3 of water since 2007, our desalination plant in Sur is among the most important projects in the Sultanate and one of the lifelines for delivering drinking water for local communities, while reducing the extraction of already scarce freshwater resources. As the conventional desalination process comes at a heavy price for both the environment and the economy, our efforts have been to tap the potential of innovative technologies, including renewable energy to positively impact the environment, create economic opportunities and contribute to the community's overall welfare.” For his part, Ahmed bin Salim Al-Abari, the acting CEO of Nama for Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP), stated that “NPWP is collaborating with water desalination plants to support them in transitioning to the use of renewable energy for desalination purposes. This effort aligns with Oman's objectives to reach 30% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030 and 40% by 2040. NPWP congratulate Sharqiyah Desalination Company for the inauguration of the solar farm which will ensure water supply to North and South Al Sharqiyah Governates using renewable energy.” Veolia has worked in the Middle East for over 40 years, including over 15 years in Oman, where it operates in Muscat, Sur, Duqm, Nizwa, Sohar, Barka, Salalah, Rima and Khazzan. The Sultanate is one of Veolia's most essential and strategic locations, where it has developed and delivered a wide range of innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions while contributing to Oman's objectives for a green and circular economy.
