  • Maurice Lacroix x final of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour

Fltr: Hugo da Silva (Maurice Lacroix), the winners Ub Huishan NE, H.E Talal Al Hashemi (Executive Director of sports developments in Abu Dhabi), Alex Sánchez (Managing Director FIBA 3x3) Maurice Lacroix, the ‘Official Timekeeper of the FIBA 3 x 3 World Tour’ was on hand at the finals, recently held in Abu Dhabi. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Ub Huishan NE (Serbia) secured victory. Each member of the winning team was given an AIKON #tide FIBA 3x3, an urban watch that’s no stranger to success. This is truly where urban watches meet urban sport! Wow, what a year for the Swiss luxury watchmaker! Since it was named the ‘Official Timekeeper of the FIBA 3 x 3 World Tour’ in February 2022, Maurice Lacroix has followed the tour around the globe, always on hand to time matches with notable Swiss precision. The final of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour was held in Abu Dhabi on the 10th - 11th of December in front of huge numbers of cheering fans. Twelve teams competed in the event, each determined to reign supreme within the 3x3 arena. This year, the Ub Huishan NE (Serbia) were victorious, standing on the top step of the podium. Recognising the success of the team, Maurice Lacroix presented each player with an AIKON #tide FIBA 3x3 watch. This ground-breaking model is made from ocean-bound upcycled plastic, helping to make our oceans that little bit cleaner. Moreover, the watch remains an AIKON, a name that has come to mean urban design, Swiss quality and high perceived value. Indeed, with Maurice Lacroix, each wearer is a winner both on and off the court! Your time is now with Maurice Lacroix For almost 50 years, Maurice Lacroix has demonstrated all of its watchmaking expertise, crafting watches within the brand’s Manufacture in Saignelégier, Switzerland. Having won more than fifteen awards, the brand has demonstrated an innovative, avant-garde and perfectionist spirit over the years. Maurice Lacroix’s culture is indeed to offer affordable watches, with iconic design and high perceived value. In 2016, Maurice Lacroix reinterpreted its iconic model of the 90s, the Calypso, releasing the AIKON. Modern and daring, the AIKON is made for a generation of Millennials who are connected, cosmopolitan and talented. This ambitious generation is setting out to conquer the world’s cities, embracing their unique spirit. A constant source of inspiration for the Maurice Lacroix creative team, an active and urban brand, that thrives in the electric energy of these cities. With this in mind, Maurice Lacroix chooses to associate its image with a set of activities that allow consumers to experience the unique vitality of city life. Maurice Lacroix is pleased to unveil three special edition watches that uphold the benefits of the recently launched AIKON #tide, combining them with the exciting world of 3x3, the global basketball format beloved by millions. Sharing the same qualities as other members of the AIKON family, these latest watches prove a game changer both on and off the court. Earlier this year Maurice Lacroix unveiled a ground-breaking new watch, the AIKON #tide. Sharing the same attributes as other members of the AIKON family, these new models are formed of ocean-bound upcycled plastic, an undisclosed formula and glass fibre. The resultant composite material is twice as hard as standard plastic, five times more resistant and has a carbon footprint significantly less than the production of virgin PET. The bezel, case, case back, crown, end-piece and buckle are all made from this composite material. It takes 17 bottles to make one watch and its tailor made packaging which means 17 fewer bottles polluting the ocean. Hot on the heels of the recent launch of the AIKON #tide, Maurice Lacroix now unites its innovative model with the fast-paced sport discipline of 3x3 basketball. The Swiss-based watch brand is no stranger to city life. It is the ‘Official Timekeeper of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour’, an action-packed game, played in some of the world’s most exciting, urban settings. Born on the streets, 3x3 is now part of the Olympic program. Played worldwide, the game is broadcast in over 100 countries and watched by millions of fans around the globe. With a huge social media audience, connected fans are never far from the action. It’s an exciting domain where players cover the court with incredible alacrity. Pass or shoot, the court is an energy-packed arena where concentration is absolute and fatigue spells defeat. The new special edition AIKON #tide FIBA3x3, brims with energy. Housed in a 40mm case, this basketball-themed watch features a flat sapphire crystal, augmenting readability, while the quartz movement delivers precision in a world where seconds count. These two models, ideally suited to court-dwellers, are available with black or white dials and come supplied on coordinating straps. The dials incorporate the ‘3x3’ logo arranged in an elaborate motif, while the case back is also embossed with the ‘3x3’ logo. When the inaugural versions of the AIKON #tide were unveiled, they sported vibrant dial shades and funky coloured straps. Now, Maurice Lacroix returns with a further eye-popping creation, this time inspired by the official Wilson ball of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour. This new model encompasses blue, orange and yellow hues and fizzes with vitality. Again, the dial is adorned with the FIBA 3x3 logo which is also repeated on the case back. Meanwhile, consistent with the brand’s environmentally conscious mindset, the AIKON #tide FIBA3x3 isn’t presented in excessive packaging but comes in a colour-coordinated mug that can be used again and again and…. With this latest initiative, produced with the help of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour, the dynamic watch brand from the Swiss Jura has provided even more choice for members of Gen Z. Consistent with all Maurice Lacroix models, these new creations deliver high perceived value. Maurice Lacroix chose to collaborate with the FIBA 3x3 World Tour because it’s a sporting format that is urban, accessible and success-driven. Irrespective of which special edition watch you choose to wear, you will be contributing to cleaner oceans as well as looking cool on and off the court. Quite simply, the Maurice Lacroix AIKON #tide FIBA3x3 is a game changer! The model was launched at the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Opener in Utsunomiya in Japan from 13th to 15th May.

  • St. Moritz and contemporary art at Hauser & Wirth

The winter season has started early this winter with early snow and you can already view new exciting winter exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz. This winter the gallery curates presentation of works by the celebrated German conceptual artist Isa Genzken, titled "Inside and Out", 9 December 2022–4 February 2023. Bringing together the artist’s early exposed-concrete sculptures, social facades, and later wall works, the exhibition highlights Genzken’s career-long interest in modernist architecture, in particular its structural characteristics and social relevance. The works on display give visual form to central questions in the artist’s oeuvre that deal with the relationship between sculpture and space, location and perception, and the window or wall as a social and architectural connection between interior and exterior. How do we build up facade that can appear cold like concrete and impersonal. Artist explores this dichotomy cleverly in different materials in presented artworks. The facade as a social construct Isa Genzken. Untitled (2017). Adhesive tape on aluminium panel 70 x 100 x 1.8 cm. Photo: Jens Ziehe. All images courtesy the artist and Galerie Buchholz, Cologne/Berlin/New York. © 2022, Pro Litteris, Zurich. With Genzken’s "Social Facades" (Soziale Fassaden), the artist examines the relationship between inside and out. By creating impressions of high-rise facades by means of metal foil and adhesive tape, Genzken brings the skyline down to our level, enabling direct interaction with the aesthetics of a fluctuating urban fabric. The "social facades" are once again referencing modernist architecture, where windows—particularly glass facades—were introduced as central design elements in skyscrapers to connect the interior with the exterior view. Experimenting with autobiographical encodings Incorporating various mirroring foils in "Untitled" (2017), Genzken not only highlights the formal qualities of the facades but also the reflective properties of the material they were made of. Additional wall works on view demonstrate how Genzken has, in recent years, allowed more and more traces of her own life into her works. Inserting autobiographical encodings, such as her self-portrait, into her works has nothing to do with expressionist notions of authorship; instead, it underlines the continued social and personal element of Genzken’s work. In "Untitled" (2017), her visage is captured in an informal snapshot, placed in the middle of what looks like her studio, and collaged into a grid of tape and foil. Isa Genzken. Untitled (2015). Mirror foil, newsprint, stickers on canvas 102.2 x 74 x 2.5 cm. Combining autobiographical archival material with various reflective mirror foils, "Untitled" (2015) revisits the idea of the facade as a social construct in relation to her identity and presence as an artist. Collaged and inserted among the materials and sculptural vocabulary that have typically defined her practice in recent years, these autobiographical images and their inclusion seem to mark an accelerated interest on Genzken’s part in positioning, quite literally, her body, image, and, indeed, herself into her work. "Yes, I'm also a social person, after all," Genzken notes. "You see that in my work, too, in which the viewer can again and again see his mirror image." The works in "Inside and Out" alter our own perception of what and how we see, allowing us to reflect on the space surrounding both the artwork and ourselves. Isa Genzken. Saal (Room). 1989. Genzken is best known for her sculptures, gaining acclaim for her minimalist-oriented hyperbolas and ellipses in the late 1970s and architecturally-inflected works such as her epoxy resin windows and skyscraper columns from the 1990s. While Genzken’s practice is highly diverse, she has continually challenged the viewer’s self-awareness by means of physically altering their perceptions, bringing bodies together in space, and integrating elements of mixed media into sculpture. Genzken’s work has been exhibited in international institutional shows. She was awarded the Nasher Prize for sculpture in September 2018 and the prestigious Goslarer Kaiserring (or Emperor’s Ring). • Hauser & Wirth Zurich: "David Smith: Four Sculptures"

Hauser & Wirth gallery on Bahnhofstrasse 1 in Zurich presents "David Smith: Four Sculptures"by David Smith (1906–1965), who was a major figure in 20th-century art and the sculptor most directly linked to the abstract expressionist movement. Smith is renowned for his use of commercial materials and methods as well as the use of free space into his works. The exhibition "David Smith: Four Sculptures" will be on display in gallery's glass-fronted facade, 9 December 2022 – 6 April 2023, featuring four amazing painted sculptures by Smith from the early 1960s, as part of the exhibition. David Smith. Zig I (detail). 1961- Painted steel- Overall: 245.1 x144.8 x 81.9 cm / 96 1/2 x 57 x 32 1/4 in. Photo: Stefan Altenburger, Photography Zürich. All images © 2022 The Estate of David Smith / Licensed by VAGA at Artists Rights Society (ARS), NY Courtesy the Estate and Hauser & Wirth. Regarded as one of the most innovative sculptors of his generation, David Smith (1906–65) sought to redefine what sculpture could be in the modern world. Born in Decatur, Indiana, Smith worked as an automobile welder before moving to New York City, where he studied painting at the Art Students League. He is widely acknowledged for having created the first welded metal sculpture in the United States and for his ability to use steel as an expressive, sculptural material. Over a 33-year career, he broadened the cultural and material conditions of sculpture while questioning and advancing its relationship with nature. Smith often worked on multiple series at the same time and regarded his sculptures, paintings, and drawings as part of a continuous flow of creativity. Smith's painted sculpture - an idea with base in ancient art Smith worked simultaneously in both painting and sculpture throughout his career, referring to himself as both, "I've always created painted sculpture.". Smith incorporated painting ideas into his sculpture and vice versa, citing the fusion of painting and sculpture in ancient Egyptian and Greek art. By the early 1960s, he had reached a new level of creativity: in the last five years of his life, he produced nearly one-third of his total sculptural output while working on a monumental scale. The large, painted works in "David Smith: Four Sculptures" are outstanding examples of the culmination of Smith’s long exploration of color and form. "Zig I" (1961) is a part of Smith’s Zig series that comprises seven large-scale, vertical works, each numbered by the artist. The series’ name was an "affectionate term," according to Smith, that derived from "ziggurat"—a stepped pyramid found in ancient Mesopotamia. Each of the Zigs features inventive arrangements of planes and rounded forms that yield surprising spatial relationships as a viewer walks around the sculpture. "Zig I" is made from cut sections of steel tubes that ascend in a playful dance along a vertical axis. An application of feathery, black brushstrokes over a russet ground activates the surface of this work, capturing the gestural vigor seen in the work of Smith's fellow abstract expressionists. In 1962, Smith was invited to make two sculptures for an exhibition associated with the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Working with a crew of local metalworkers in an abandoned steel factory in the nearby town of Voltri, Smith produced a total of twenty-seven sculptures within a month. The experience would have a profound impact on Smith’s work. David Smith, Primo Piano II. 1962. Steel, bronze, stainless steel, paint. 225.1 x 408.3 x 79.4 cm / 88 5/8 x 160 3/4 x 31 1/4 in. The title is Italian for "first floor"—the floor above the ground floor—where, Smith explained, "most of the action takes place." In "Primo Piano II" (1962), for example, two vertical elements elevate a central, horizontal beam, above which a dynamic interplay of different shapes and metals unfolds across a span over thirteen feet long. In a natural setting, this large-scale sculpture commands a strong visual presence as a graphic contrast to the landscape. While the other two works in this series are entirely white, "Primo Piano II" incorporates elements of unpainted bronze and stainless steel that introduce compelling variations within the work itself. Smith described "Gondola II" (1964) as his latest painted sculpture in a lecture delivered at Bennington College shortly before his untimely death in May 1965. Smith left behind an expansive, complex, and powerful body of work that continues to exert influence on younger generations of artists. Exhibitions devoted to David Smith’s work have been presented internationally since the 1950s. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY, presented Smith’s first retrospective in 1957. Smith represented the United States at the So Paulo Biennale in 1951, as well as at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and 1958. The chromatic surface of "Gondola II" is elegantly articulated, with a black, diamond-shaped plane topped by a cream-colored stanchion and flanked by two cloud-like forms, one in cream and the other a deep purple—tonal contrasts that counterbalance the general symmetry of the work. The title is a reference to the Italian name for the cart used in factories, such as Smith's workspace in Voltri, to transport large, heavy materials. Smith would incorporate the term "gondola" into the titles of two other large, planar sculptures, now in museum collections. He made the first "Gondola" in 1961 as a response, in sculpture, to Robert Motherwell’s renowned series of paintings, "Elegy to the Spanish Republic." A dialogue through art with other artists was part of Smith’s "workflow" and inspiration. "David Smith: Four Sculptures" offers a rare opportunity to consider these distinct sculptures in relation to one another and to explore the many ways Smith mined history and his own prolific career to continue expanding the definition of sculpture.

  • Art +PARIS and ART BASEL 2022

Flash Back I liked the FIAC; I worked there in my younger years on behalf of the Etienne de Causans Gallery, when Paris was less serious and total carefreeness reigned. Large dinners were organized unexpectedly and at the height of the arrogance of my 20s, I would dine next to Master Botero represented at the time by the Colombian Gallery which belonged to the Quintana brothers. I asked Fernando with the naive impudence of extreme youth if the gargantuan women in his paintings - in my true Lyonnaise way - corresponded to his feminine ideal. There he declined laughing and explained to me that it was only a style, he told me about his beginnings in New-York... FIAC was a cozy living room where the likes of Olivier Dassault walked nonchalantly linking arms with Mademoiselle Suarez d'Aulan, from one gallery to another with the sharp eye of a photographer and a searching art collector. I offered him three almonds... Arman's son Yves would confide his heartaches in me. Antoine Javal would pass by to explore potentials for his Rue de Seine Gallery with my friend the painter Jean Clerté and his beautiful wife Jacqueline (Jean was part of the Cobra Group with Alechinsky). The FIAC embodied the Golden Age of Contemporary Art. We spoke all languages and all while selling, trading, buying, drinking Champagne and having fun with the flair and the bold and insolent self-confidence of extreme youth, at the Grand Palais. "Géométrie Carrée" 2022 by Prune Nourry, French artist born in 1985-Galerie Templon. A chaotic ride & Sunday stroll at Art +PARIS, ART BASEL 2022 The previous carefreeness is no longer as visible, although it’s true that the economic environment has changed over the years. Tragedies such as the Subprime mortgage crisis, the Madoff scandal, the September 11th attacks, the Nice terrorist attacks, Covid, and the war have passed, but the art market has continued to be organized like a digital and bulimic Mercury. Messy jumble at Art +PARIS, ART BASEL 2022 It has also grown in strength and scale, though not necessarily in depth as you can’t ask for too much. However, this International yearly exhibition of contemporary art is worth stopping for. All the big players visit: Simon de Pury, the "Mick Jagger" of this world stopped by a few days ago and a little birdie tells me that Art+ Art Basel are looking for new sponsors for 2023. The great Masters are all there - I even spotted a Soulages while he was still from this world, artistic scenes although certainly disorderly and sometimes even chaotic and noisy like an unruly schoolyard - but Art is alive and well, and even sometimes powerful at Art + PARIS, ART BASEL 2022. A narcissistic mirror of a world in redefinition that looks at itself and seeks itself out. I am giving you a chaotic and rather disorderly jumbled image of my apprehension of this moment of unexpected discovery. Here's what I liked about this Sunday afternoon in Paris... The Louis Vuitton Foundation (above) offered six contemporary artists the opportunity to interpret a limited edition of 200 Bags/Sculptures very naturally linking the Art Foundation and the Louis Vuitton Leather Goods House. In essence, similar to when I was twenty years old, I had a lot of fun...
