This great exhibition is part of the of the 140th anniversary celebration of Claude Monet's first visit to Monaco and the Riviera, where the leader of Impressionism discovers, halfway through his long life, landscapes and light that would mark a turning point in his work and in his career.

Around a section devoted to paintings created during his time on the Riviera, through twenty one loaned exceptional works exhibited for the first time near the still preserved sites where they were painted, the exhibition strives to put the master's work into perspective, from his youth in Le Havre, to the last paintings of Giverny, showing his quest to capture light.

The exhibition brings together a total of one hundred paintings, almost half of which have been provided through the exceptional and generous support of the Musée Marmottan Monet. Other masterpieces are from private collections including the Prince's Palace of Monaco, as well as major international institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Von der Heydt-Museum à Wuppertal and Fondation Beyeler in Basel.
