  • Geneva Watch Days can look back on a record edition and new digital platform

    - THE WATCH INDUSTRY'S SUMMER GET-TOGETHER COMES TO AN END. SUMMING UP THIS EDITION IN FIGURES The Watch Library, a charitable foundation registered in February 2022, is committed to preserving and promoting the world’s watchmaking heritage. A new chapter opened with the launch of a digital platform that offers public access to over 320,000 archival documents. Team from watchlibrary.org The Watch Library project began when watch publishing house Europa Star, established in Geneva in 1927, digitized its own archives. The gradual release of magazine issues spanning nearly a century triggered a broader reflection on the importance of heritage for the world of watchmaking. In March 2020 the Maillard family joined forces with Martine Depresle (The Talented) to conceptualize, create and develop the project. The project was conceived as a non-profit foundation to facilitate access to the documents and enable the implementation of open data policies wherever possible. The Watch Library Foundation was established in September 2021 and granted charitable status by the Swiss Confederation in February 2022. The Foundation is built around the core belief that making watchmaking heritage accessible to the widest possible audience will stimulate imagination, creativity and innovation across the sector. Prominent horological institutions including the Musée International d’Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Horological Society of New York were quick to join the project and commit to serving the Foundation's mission. Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille were among the first patrons, and were instrumental in getting the project off the ground. They were soon joined by other watchmakers, including TAG Heuer in the summer of 2023, as well as other major industry partners who prefer to remain anonymous, in accordance with their philanthropic values. An industry-wide movement was mobilized around the goal of preserving and promoting their forgotten horological archives. It was given further impetus by the recognition of watchmaking savoir-faire by UNESCO in December 2020, which rallied many partners around The Watch Library project. Arc Horloger, the Franco-Swiss entity that championed the candidacy, sits on the Board of Trustees of The Watch Library, whose funding is secured by public and private patronage. The Watch Library is non-partisan, working exclusively towards preserving and increasing the visibility of watchmaking heritage. A scientific committee made up of experts is tasked with identifying and validating the relevance of the archives to be preserved and incorporated into The Watch Library's online platform, which was launched on 1 September in Geneva during the Geneva Watch Days. The technological side of the project turned out to be just as time-consuming as the preservation of the archives themselves. The convergence of analog heritage and digital technology found its full resonance with the launch of The Watch Library online platform, which has been thoughtfully designed and built around its users. A panel of watch enthusiasts, both industry professional and aficionados, were involved in testing the platform and providing insights that shaped its features. The platform's first version already hosts over 320,000 documents and archive pages from a dozen different sources. Enabling real-time search among tens of thousands of documents of varying formats, sizes, and sources presented a genuine challenge. Charitable foundation, non-profit Over 320,000 items digitized so far Publications, magazines, catalogs, almanacs, notes, books, drawings, photos, videos – the platform covers a huge variety of watch-related content Principle of free access Shared goal of preserving and passing on watchmaking heritage The pavilion at the Rotonde du Mont Blanc was open to the public for four days and welcomed 8’000 people from the public. All images © After a week full of launches, meetings and lively discussions, Geneva Watch Days can look back on a record edition: 39 participating brands and nearly 1,500 industry professionals, including 600 media representatives and 300 retailers, came from all over the world to gather on the shores of Lake Geneva. The pavilion at the Rotonde du Mont Blanc was open to the public for four days and welcomed 8’000 people from the public, who were able to admire the latest offerings from the brands in 51 display cases grouped around three themes. 450 of them enjoyed guided tours led by three experts. The six symposiums on issues dear to the heart of the watchmaking industry were also a great success, each one drawing in fifty or so listeners to the auditorium. The brunch organized on Saturday, September 2 by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie attracted about 100 watch lovers to put their knowledge to the test in a quiz. Students, collectors and business executives had the opportunity to talk directly with the CEOs of the participating brands at three informal breakfasts. Finally, the charity auction held on August 30 organized jointly by Geneva Watch Days and Phillips in association with Bacs & Russo raised CHF 110’000.-for a fund dedicated to worthy students at the Ecole d’Horlogerie de Genève who find themselves in economic difficulty. "Naturally, the success of this edition is down to our participating brands, and also to our partners. I would like to thank the Republic and Canton of Geneva, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Geneva Tourism, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, Horopedia, the Ecole d’Horlogerie de Genève, the Watch Library, Worldtempus, GMT magazine and Revolution magazine for their valuable support," said Antoine Pin, President of the Geneva Watch Days Association and Director of Bulgari Watches. Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling, is thrilled by the way the event went: "I am proud and delighted to play a part in and be a witness to this initiative - a collaboration that has been growing steadily ever since it was established three years ago. It's a cultural moment, a unifying event and a platform for dialog in the watchmaking industry." "Informal but professional, decentralized but welcoming, this salon is the perfect format for launching our new products for the last quarter. Girard Perregaux and Ulysse Nardin are proud to be among the founding members and to contribute to its continuity," added Patrick Pruniaux, CEO of the two brands. Maximilian Büsser, founder and director of MB&F, cannot conceal his enthusiasm either: "Launching beautiful mechanical objects opposite the Jet d'eau, right in the cradle of watchmaking, can only be a delight. In a world where digital is gaining the upper hand, it remains crucial to share and exchange views with both industry professionals and the general public." Boosted by this success, the salon is all set for its fifth edition in 2024 and is becoming an essential get-together in the industry's calendar. The Geneva Watch Days are an industry salon founded in 2020 by eight prestigious watch brands: Breitling, Bulgari, De Bethune, Girard-Perregaux, H. Moser & Cie, MB&F, Ulysse Nardin, and Urwerk. The event is based on a modern and unconventional philosophy that emphasizes straightforward cooperation. It is a self-managed organization that is light, flexible, and agile, providing a common space to showcase the latest developments in watchmaking, while giving participating brands the opportunity to host decentralized activities. Held in partnership with the Canton and the City of Geneva, and with the support of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCIG), the show caters to industry professionals including retailers and media, while also being completely open to the public. The 2023 event brought together the following brands: Alpina, Angelus, Armin Strom, Arnold & Son, Artime, Bausele, Bianchet, Breitling, Bulgari, Byrne, Konstantin Chaykin, Claude Meylan, Corum, Czapek & Cie, De Bethune, Doxa, Frédérique Constant Group, Girard Perregaux, Greubel Forsey, Hautlence, HYT, Jacob and Co, Krayon, Laurent Ferrier, Louis Erard, Massena Lab, Maurice Lacroix, MB&F, H. • YUNGCHEN LHAMO: ONE DROP OF KINDNESS

Imagine a life based on unconditional love. A life filled with compassion, lived in service to others. A life of prayers, offerings, and songs. Now imagine a voice so unique and beautiful, so utterly irresistible, that it makes the birds perch in the trees and the wild animals stop dead in their tracks and listen. A voice as pure as a Tibetan singing bowl. A voice with a range that astonishes and a strength, a vibration, that uplifts and restores. For welcome - welcome - to the wonder that is Yungchen Lhamo. By Jane Cornwell YUNGCHEN LHAMO with His Holiness The DALAI LAMA "I sing to help transform people's minds and make them better human beings," says the globally renowned Tibetan singer. "We are living in difficult times. But together, bit by bit, we can change the world." - YUNGCHEN LHAMO Lhamo's seventh album, One Drop of Kindness, is a glorious reminder, a golden encouragement, for us to do just that. Co-produced with John Alevizakis at Little Buddha Studio in the forested slopes of Sierra Nevada, California, the recording is a new version of an ancient practice, a work whose seven songs - or better yet, seven offerings - are spiced by musicians playing everything from piano, flute, drums and electric guitar to didgeridoo, Indian fiddle, Turkish cümbüs-oud and Armenian duduk-oboe. This is music as it was originally conceived: as a tool to heal, to build communities, to provide a universal language. To open hearts, to share influences, to unite cultures. "Musically I wanted to do something different, more instinctive and rhythmic," says New York-based Lhamo, who has toured more than 80 countries since releasing her award-winning debut Tibetan Prayer in 1995 and the seminal Tibet Tibet Tibet on Real World Records the following year. "John has enough instruments in his studio for a small orchestra. We picked a few and started creating." The main instrument on One Drop of Kindness is - what else? - the voice. Warm, bright, rich in emotion. It mesmerises with its melisma. It fills with blessings with its vibrato. It flows seamlessly from low throaty throat singing to long sustained high notes, with an otherworldly beauty and the kind of perfectly smooth sound waves that make studio engineers shake their heads in disbelief. A voice that offers potential for spiritual awakening. "The older I get, the better I understand how to convey the healing of sound to people, regardless of their religion, belief or non-belief," says Lhamo, whose name, given to her by a lama at birth in Lhasa, Tibet, means "Goddess of Melody". That in 1989 she left Tibet, making the month-long journey on foot across the Himalayas to Dharamsala, India, to follow her spiritual practice. In 1993 he moved to Australia and in 2000 to New York. She now lives in Kingston, upstate New York, a city with historic churches and a thriving arts community, not far from the Catskill Mountains. Famous for being the first Tibetan singer to be signed to a major label, Lhamo has collaborated with the likes of Bono, Billy Corgan, and Annie Lennox, and has graced the stages of such illustrious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House, standing still in the spotlight to sing a cappella, with a quivering voice and a costume the colour of pearls. © All images All this, she says, is secondary to her purpose: to encourage compassion for all beings. To encourage acts of kindness. After setting up the One Drop of Kindness Foundation in 2004 with the aim of helping those in need in Tibet (since then, the charity has supported projects in the US, Nepal, and India), in 2013 Lhamo decided to move away from acting internationally and focus on working with the homeless and mentally ill in designated centres in Kingston. "Many people in the West live in fear. They feel isolated and unloved. I tell them that they are beautiful, that every human life is beautiful," she continues. "When the people I work with are sick or dying, I stay with them. I wash them. I cook for them. I sing to them. These are my offerings. Just as the pandemic hit, Lhamo had finished recording her sixth album, the meditative Awakening, which was released last year and underlined the importance of introducing compassion-based spirituality into our self-centred narratives. One Drop of Kindness was probably meant to be. In California, as part of a fundraising tour for theOne Drop of Kindness Foundation, Lhamohappened to come across - or was energetically directed to - Alevizakisand his fortuitously titled Little Buddha studio. "When I opened the door and saw the unusual instruments and felt JonJon [Alevizakis]'s good energy, I knew I would make a record there," she says. Alevizakis' passion for the transformative potential of trance music, for dance and music as medicine, matched Lhamo's chanted prayers. Over two days, with Lhamo on vocals, mantras, and energy in spades ("I have all the words in my head") and Alevizakis on keyboards, banyo, oud, cümbüs and guitars, they improvised, created from scratch. Musicians passed by or were added later. Seven songs. Titled in English, sung in Tibetan. Sent - with loving kindness - to the world. The first song, 'Sound Healing', weaves the haunting drone of the didgeridoo, that earth-frequency instrument of Australia's First Nations, into a mantra designed to repair and restore, as Lhamo's voice - always majestic, sometimes with multiple celestial cues - sets out to pave the way to enlightenment. A testament to feminine healing energy, "Awakening Through Sounds" brings delicate piano chords and soulful duduk passages to a mantra designed to calm the restless monkey mind, to bring balance, relief, and presence. The dramatic, slow-building, deftly paced "Overcoming Obstacles" is a string-driven homage to Guru Rinpoche, who brought India's spiritual teachings to Tibet in the 8th century. The song's title - and its sentiments of freedom and possibility - could well apply to Lhamo herself. "It is true that I have overcome many obstacles," she says. "I am a woman. I didn't speak English. I only sang in Tibetan. I had no band. I travelled alone. But I had a voice, and I carried it with me." Augmented with bells, shakers and found sounds of village life, "Perfect Compassion" honours Om Mani Padme Hum, the well-known Mani mantra of compassion, whose six syllables each have a colour, a visual form and, when chanted, a demonstrated vibrational power to transform negative into positive. "I have this Mani mantra on my prayer wheel, always spinning," says Lhamo, on most of whose albums an image of the Mani mantra appears, and whose lips continually move in prayer. "Being Courageous" fuses Lhamo's gorgeous harmonics with North African and Middle Eastern trance sounds in a life-affirming and rhythmically thrilling way. The cinematic "Dedication To My Teacher" is a tender and vivid ode to those who are determined to live their lives with sincerity, without ego. Dream Song" reminds us of our potential to do good in every waking moment, and the life-enhancing lessons that come to us in our sleep. One Drop of Kindness. An album of love, compassion, offerings, and song. A reminder that together we can make a difference. "Kindness is recognised as a virtue in many cultures and religions," says Yungchen Lhamo. "A single act of kindness, however big or small, can change a life and remind us that we are connected. That we all inhale and exhale. That we all share the same earth and the same sky." She pauses and smiles, "It's really very simple," she says. "One drop of kindness can make an ocean of difference. https://www.yungchenlhamo.com https://www.onedropofkindness.org © All visuals copyright. The temple is one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara” and remains a timeless showcase of Japanese architecture and culture. Once Japan’s imperial capital during the eighth century, Nara is home to an incomparable collection of UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites, some of which surround the hotel – Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kofukuji Temple and Todaiji Temple. Images Harry Elliott. David Bagley, Salon Privé co-founder and director - ‘We are truly delighted with this year’s Best of Show Bugatti Type 57S by Corsica. This Bugatti, thought to be one of the 3 Le-Mans winning Tanks, is such a hugely significant car, and hadn’t been driven for over half a century, before being restored to its former glory by Clark & Carter Restorations. Raced at Montlhéry, reaching top speeds of 111mph, this Bugatti is all-original and one of the world’s greatest pre-war sports racers. We now look forward to its entry into the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award.” Honorary Award winners range from a 1900 Bardon Type A to a 1968 Porsche 911 T/R. £30 million Salon Privé Yellow Collection an eye-catching centrepiece draw, to complement the Concours. JCB founder and chairman Lord Anthony Bamford’s 1937 Bugatti Type 57S by Corsica has been awarded Best of Show at this year’s Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva. The expert ICJAG Judges were super-impressed – Salon Privé is overseen by International Chief Judging Advisory Group judges and the only ICJAG+ designated show in Europe – as were the thousands of Blenheim guests who saw the Bugatti triumph after two intensive days of judging. The 1937 Bugatti Type 57S is one of just 42 produced, with open grand tourer four-seater bodywork custom-built by Corsica Coachworks. With a 3.3-litre engine, it was the fastest road car of its day. Remarkably, this long-lost car was the world’s only remaining ‘hidden’ pre-war Bugatti Type 57S when it was discovered in 2020, after being owned and latterly restored by Bugatti enthusiast Bill Turnbull since 1969. It is fitting Lord Bamford bought the car; Turnbull was an engineer by trade – at JCB. The talented chief engineer, who helped develop JCB’s first mini excavators, retired in 1995, before turning his hand to reviving his prized Bugatti, a task that Lord Bamford completed. Completing the turnaround of the storied Bugatti, nicknamed ‘Dulcie’ due to its UK registration ‘DUL 351’, is winning Best of Show at the 2023 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva. 1951 Ferrari 212 Export by Vignale [parade] Runner-up in the Best of Show was a 1951 Ferrari 212 Export by Vignale, originally owned by Prince Vittorio Massimo. The Prince’s objective was to buy a race car for the road with an understated and elegant GT body, and car 0080E certainly fits the bill. It was even displayed at the 1951 Torino Auto Show, on Carrozzeria Vignale’s stand, as the best of the seven Ferrari 212 coupes made by the coachbuilder. Exported to the US in 1953, the car was lost for many years, before its current owner acquired and restored it. Bugatti, a 1951 Type 101 Cabriolet by Gangloff (third prize) Another Bugatti, a 1951 Type 101 Cabriolet by Gangloff took the third prize. It is one of just nine models built as part of a plan by Bugatti founder Ettore’s son Roland to stage a post-war revival for the brand. It was based on the pre-war Type 57 chassis and powertrain, and this ageing technology was behind the failure of the revival. Uniquely, this car is the only 101 to receive the T57C’s supercharged engine, producing around 200bhp. It’s had several noted owners over the years, and is currently owned by Peter and Merle Mullin for the Mullin Automobile Museum in California. This year’s Salon Privé Duke of Marlborough Award was, appropriately, awarded to a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom Sedanca de Ville by Windovers – a car owned by John Albert Edward William Spencer-Churchill, the 10th Duke of Marlborough and cousin of Winston Churchill. Both John Albert and Winston Churchill were born and lived in Blenheim Palace, and this very car served both families over a long period between 1929 and 1950. It was a special moment when the 12th Duke of Marlborough, James Spencer-Churchill, made it his pick of Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace. Winning the Spirit Award – The Margaret Bagley Trophy was a veteran 1900 Bardon Type A Tonneau. It has a unique single-cylinder engine, displacing 1,216cc, containing two opposing pistons, each connected to its own crankshaft and flywheel. While the production of Bardon cars ceased in 1903, chassis number five lived on. Acquired from the collection of Henri Malartre at the Musée de Rochetaillée-sur-Saone, Lyon, in 1976, this rare Bardon Tonneau received a full restoration and was finally acquired by current custodians David and Marion Martyr. In 2016 it won the Royal Automobile Club Concours d’Equipe prize at the Regent Street Motor Show and took part in its maiden London to Brighton Veteran Car Run – the world's longest-running motoring event. The 2023 Salon Privé Concours Chairman’s Award winner was yet another show-stopper – a thoroughly unique 1952 Hansgen Jaguar. Walt Hansgen was a multi-discipline American racing driver, triumphing in multiple categories and even making it to Formula 1 where, despite only competing in two races, still scored two championship points. His career was launched when he acquired a 1951 Jaguar XK120, but he soon found it wasn’t light enough to run at the front. Enter the engineer-driver’s ingenuity: after being unable to purchase a Jaguar C-type, he instead turned his XK120 into a lightweight special. He replaced its basic latter frame chassis with an elaborate tubular structure, cutting the weight from over 1,200kg to around 950kg. It was a sensation, with Hansgen now able to run at the front. He took several victories in 1953, most famously at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix, the race that really put Walt on the map. After finally getting a C-type, the Hansgen Special was sold, passing through several owners before being acquired by Bob Millstein – who still races the car in vintage events! Salon Privé chairman Andrew Bagley said: “This year’s Concours cars were truly exceptional and as ever a hard-fought contest to declare the winner, but I’m delighted to see Lord Bamford’s world-class Bugatti take the 2023 Best of Show Trophy. There were some terrifically rare and prized cars celebrated in the Honorary Awards too, once again showing that Salon Privé really does attract the very finest automotive jewels, year after year.” Full list of this year’s winners: 2023 Salon Privé Concours presented by Aviva Winners Best in Show 1937 Bugatti Type 57S by Corsica Best in Show Runner-up 1951 Ferrari 212 Export by Vignale Best in Show 3rd Place 1951 Bugatti Type 101 Cabriolet by Gangloff Duke of Marlborough Award 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom Sedanca de Ville by Windovers Chairman’s Award 1952 Hansgen Jaguar Class A: Veteran & Pioneers 1907 Renault Type AI 35/45HP (Vanderbilt Racer) Class B1: Pre-war British (Open) 1937 Alvis Speed 25 SC by Offord & Sons Class B2: Pre-war International (Open) 1937 Bugatti Type 57S by Corsica Class C: Pre-war Elegance (Closed) 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante Roll-back Coupé Class D: Post War (Open) 1951 Bugatti Type 101 Cabriolet by Gangloff Class E: Post-war (Closed) 1952 Lancia Aurelia 2000 BS2 Coupé by Vignale Class F: Sports Racers 1965 Ferrari 250 LM by Pininfarina Class G: Ferrari Classiche 1951 Ferrari 212 Export by Vignale Class H: Preservation 1961 Jaguar E-type Roadster Class I: Lamborghini 60th Anniversary 1992 Lamborghini Diablo Class J: Porsche 356 - Where it all began 1955 Porsche 356 Pre A Coupé Class K: Supercar Icons (Pre 2000) 1992 Jaguar XJ220 Class L: Supercar Icons (Post 2000) 2005 Ferrari Enzo Class M: Classic Formula 1 1989 Ferrari 640 Spirit Award – The Margaret Bagley Trophy 1900 Bardon Type A Tonneau Most Exceptional Coachwork 1987 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV Most Opulent 1923 Rolls-Royce 40/50 Silver Ghost Cabriolet by Hooper Coup de Coeur – The Matt Pearce Trophy 1934 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio by Gangloff Best Interior 1950 Ferrari 195 S Inter Coupé by Touring Most Elegant 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso by Scaglietti Most Iconic – The George Barry Gregory Trophy 1968 Porsche 911 T/R JIA Range Rover Joining the DB12 Volante as a headliner for the Aston Martin display is the thrilling new V12 Vantage, the fastest and fiercest version ever made. • Ukrainian brand with 25-years old history VIKTORANISIMOV debuts sustainable collection at CPHFW

The official launch of the 4th edition of the Geneva Watch Day Ukrainian brand with 25-years old history –VIKTORANISIMOV – presented its first sustainable collection as a part of the Copenhagen Fashion Week SS24! VICTORANISIMOV Spring-Summer 2024 Designer Victor Anisimov explores unlimited possibilities of uniforms in the Spring-Summer 2024 collection for his namesake label. Anisimov believes that menswear originates in utilitarian clothes, specifically in military uniform and its elements, which then transitioned into a peaceful life wardrobe. Military references are inevitable in this collection, because the Ukrainian nation is in a state of war and to Victor it is a context, which is impossible to ignore. The designer seeks for inspiration in the heroism of Ukrainian defenders and turns to their image as a symbol of resistance and strength. The SS24 collection consists of various reimagined uniforms such as worker’s robes, overalls and various military uniforms and its elements. The key color of the collection is green in different shades. To the designer green means not only army green, but also the color of nature’s spring awakening. Multicolored camouflage pattern reminds the bird's eye view of the Ukrainian fields, signal red warns of danger, but also the color of flowers and soft pink is in the collection to remind us about spring in its purest form. The designer uses certified fabrics with an age-worn effect in the collection to reflect on the damage caused, but also to recontextualize it and give it a new life in a peaceful world. Organic and recycled wools, cottons, jerseys and various technological materials that are associated with uniforms are used here to remind us about its origin, but also to give it “civil” context. VICTORANISIMOV SS24 collection is a dedication to a soldier of peace – a hero, who fights for “spring” on his land. With this collection the designer wants to remind the world that while we are still in a state of terrible war, we have a future and it will definitely come bright. © All visuals copyright. • Delphine Bachmann, Councilor of State of the Canton of Geneva at the official launch of the GWD

The official launch of the 4th edition of the Geneva Watch Days Centre: Delphine Bachmann, Councilor of State responsible for the economy and employment. JEAN-CHRISTOPHE BABIN, CEO OF BVLGARI "Geneva Watch Days no longer needs to prove its audacity. The salon was inaugurated in 2020 and has been growing in scale and prestige ever since, meeting each year at the idyllic location of La Rade. Today, it forms the international showcase for excellence in Swiss watchmaking, which accounted for exports worth more than CHF 24 billion in 2022. Almost half of these exports come from Geneva, which is excellent news for the economy of our canton," comments Delphine Bachmann, Councilor of State responsible for the economy and employment. 'The Geneva Watch Days was born in 2020 after the cancellations of Baselworld and Watches & Wonders, due to the pandemic. New rules for a new world: decentralized, inclusive, agile and open to the public. Today, more innovative than ever, the Salon continues to celebrate high horology in its cradle - Geneva.' JEAN-CHRISTOPHE BABIN, CEO OF BVLGARI Tuesday August 29 saw the official launch of the 4th edition of the Geneva Watch Days at the Rotonde du Mont Blanc. The CEOs of the 39 participating brands and official partners of the salon gathered alongside Delphine Bachmann, Councilor of State of the Canton of Geneva responsible for the Department of the Economy and Employment, to get the festivities off to a good start. And these festivities are set to be more numerous than ever: the pavilion will see a series of CEO breakfasts, discussion symposiums, and a range of press conferences. A space curated by Horopedia and the Ecole d’Horlogerie will be devoted to the watchmaking profession. The Geneva Watch Days, with Phillips in association with Bas & Russo, will also be organizing an auction at the official dinner to raise money to support deserving students at the Ecole d’Horlogerie de Genève who have no parental support. A cause dear to the hearts of all members and partners attending the salon. Naturally, the pavilion is open to the public every afternoon, with a special day on Saturday, September 2 curated by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie and the Watch Library. "Supporting industry, giving brands an informal and decentralized setting to launch their new products, meeting the major players in the business – media and retailers – as well as the general public, that's what Geneva Watch Days are all about. Born during the pandemic after other salons had been canceled, this event is becoming tradition and increasingly rooted in the cradle of watchmaking culture – Geneva," adds Antoine Pin, President of the Geneva Watch Days Association and Director of Bulgari Watches. At the launch, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève revealed the selection of 90 timepieces chosen by the GPHG Academy – made up of 847 people – to compete in the 15 categories of the 2023 edition. It is from among these that the jury and the GPHG Academy will select the winners of the 20 prizes, including the prestigious Aiguille d'Or, to be revealed on November 9 at the official ceremony in Geneva's Théâtre du Léman. Of these 84 watches and six mechanical clocks, no fewer than 19 are from brands participating in Geneva Watch Days. The essential fall get-together for the watch industry is set to sprint out of the blocks on the shores of Lake Geneva. Don't miss it! The 2023 event brings together the following brands: Alpina, Angelus, Armin Strom, Arnold & Son, Artime, Bausele, Bianchet, Breitling, Bulgari, Byrne, Konstantin Chaykin, Claude Meylan, Corum, Czapek & Cie, De Bethune, Doxa, Frédérique Constant Group, Girard Perregaux, Greubel Forsey, Hautlence, HYT, Jacob and Co, Krayon, Laurent Ferrier, Louis Erard, Massena Lab, Maurice Lacroix, MB&F, H. The watch case, inspired by round, organic forms, is meticulously crafted from recycled titanium grade 5. This not only demonstrates CORUM’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also adds a unique touch to the timepiece’s aesthetics. Every component of the movement has been carefully crafted and appears to float within the sapphire plates, creating a visually stunning effect that captures the essence of elegance and craftsmanship. The dial, located beneath the movement, crafted from aventurine stone, evokes the captivating imagery of a meteor shower, adding a touch of celestial beauty to the Concept Watch. CORUM’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design extends to the caseback as well. The expert design team in La Chaux-de-Fonds has created an intricately etched design surrounding the uniquely shaped opening. Møllerskov the Creative Director for FINE CHAOS, it became evident how strongly he believes in taking the right choices in everything they do. From product, people, and Planet are all respected equally and preferably be adding value in the world instead of using unnecessary resources. This is the key ingredient to their show, collections, employees as well as their suppliers - and they strive to make a positive impact in all communities which they meet on their journey. The brand does this by juggling the balance between "FINE" and "CHAOS," revealing the harmony between the two facets of its one universe. A potential hyper-futuristic, post-apocalyptic world taking place in 2072 is presented in the SS24 collection. In this scenario, the earth's natural resources are limited, and technology has transformed everything from nature to infrastructure to every fiber in the human body. This idea creates a contradiction between the clothing in the collection, which aims to show off the merging of nature and hyper-futurism yet is shown to be in direct opposition to one another. Finale of the show is full ‘Zipper’ look - a jacket only purely of heavy metal zippers, and trousers which are made of 50% wool and 50% zippers going down the legs of the trousers, almost ‘dragging’ the wearer down - creating an aggressive, brave and vulnerable look through the zippers’ unevenness. This is where the couture selection of FINE CHAOS takes form - as a form of art. The socially critical elements of this collection are showcased through numerous different artworks portraying the wearer in different social classes. You founded FINE CHAOS with Co-Founder Ludvig Isaksen, How did this collaboration come about? Marc C. Møllerskov: Actually, we’re six co-Founders, who started as friends and then became partners along the way. Ludvig and I met over coffee, which I was seconds from denying, which I’m happy I didn’t, haha. But we all have our own different fields of expertise, so we complement each other well in that regard. Sustainability is not just about production, but about the whole value chain, from the fibre, to the manufacturer, to the end consumer. By being open about the challenges and constantly having conversations with the community surrounding the brand, we get closer every day. - Marc C. Møllerskov Creative Director for FINE CHAOS What is the primary goal of the FINE CHAOS brand and its mission? To create meaningful concepts, relations, and contribute to a better industry overall. The industry lacks inclusivity, which is easily spotted at the runway shows, where only the ‘right’ people get to attend and experience them. And our clothing needs to serve a bigger purpose then ‘just’ being clothing, as we already have enough clothing on the planet. Therefore, all garments must have identity and quality, else it shouldn’t exist. The creative director Marc C. Møllerskov. By embracing the duality of the upcoming generation—one in which revolt and the art of expression collide—FINE CHAOS How does a brand like yours manage to stay true to its vision and values, and reach its sustainable goals? Through transparency and honesty. No clothing brand can be sustainable, so it is about how to be more ‘sustainable’ (which is a word I personally hate, as its meaning has been lost in all the greenwashing by the bigger companies). Sustainability is not just about production, but about the whole value chain, from the fibre, to the manufacturer, to the end consumer. By being open about the challenges and constantly having conversations with the community surrounding the brand, we get closer every day. What difficulties does a new-founded company face? All sorts of difficulties, it is by no means easy. You need to have stable manufacturing, which is hard because you only produce in small quantities, the sampling process is time-consuming and costly, and there’s always a big mistake as the manufacturer needs to learn who you are as a designer. The sales are challenging, as you really need to convince the stores about investing in and making a change with your brand, as you’re not as big as a Balenciaga for example. But these are also the types of challenges that push you and make you stay motivated every day. In partnership with Danish artists and friends of the brand, you unveiled the spring/summer 2024 collection in a novel immersive format. Also, tell us about the video that you created for the show? We created a short movie that is filmed at the same location as the runway, so the promo felt relatable to the people seeing the show the day after its release. The short movie was created by Hysteriget, and had Emil Baadsgaard/USSEL starring as the main actor, who is a close friend of mine from where I grew up. (I’m from the Southern part of Jutland). The movie reflected the theme of the collection, a post-apocalyptic and hyper-futuristic world, which serves as a critique of where we’re headed as a human species. It embraces how we as humans try to escape what is human-made and how we get ‘blinded’ by events that happen in the process of escaping. As the worlds of art and fashion more closely converge, how can an artist assist a creative director in conveying his vision? I wouldn’t say artists only assist, but they become a part of the process and by doing so, bring their identity and interpretation of the overall theme, which makes the vision even more diverse. That is the aim—to always create deeply layered storytelling seen through multiple lenses, if that makes sense.
