  • Alpiner Comtesse Quartz: A trio of new dials

Alpiner Comtesse Quartz: A trio of new dials ©Alpina In 2023, Alpina is unveiling three new variations of its Alpiner Comtesse Quartz women’s sports watch featuring new dials in brown, peppermint green, and lilac. Housed in a steel case that’s as robust as its 34-millimetre diameter is graceful, these quartz-powered watches complete with date window are the ideal companions for women looking forward to a lively, exciting summer whether they’re in town, at work, playing sport, or on holiday. Back in 1883, the intrepid mountaineers at the origins of the Alpina watchmaking firm were already hard at work designing watches that could accompany them everywhere on their adventures. It was important for these timepieces to be watertight, anti-magnetic, and impact-resistant. In 1963, a grand old lady of watchmaking benefited from these specifications to become Alpina’s first women’s sports watch: the Comtesse, notable for having what at the time was the smallest, strongest automatic movement ever: the Caliber 362, complete with a bidirectional rotor. The Comtesse went on to become part of the Alpina collection; now known as the Alpiner Comtesse Quartz, the watch is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, it will be released in three all-new shades heralding a summer devoted to sport andelegance. Three new summer shades With its new light brown finish, the first dial exudes timeless wisdom and distinction, whilethe subtly sparkling peppermint version gives the Alpiner Comtesse Quartz a more natural, lively and original aspect. The third alternative combines lilac with a hint of pink for a decidedly early-morning, flowery, feminine feel. The three new dials all feature a sun-brushed finish; the slightest ray of sunlight really makes them shine! Just like any other family, the three new Alpiner Comtesse Quartz models share the same DNA – and the same price tag, offering excellent value for money given their outstanding technical and stylistic quality. Each piece uses the same steel case to provide optimum impact resistance in a petite 34-millimetre diameter that’s both minimalistic and elegant. The finish features alternating matte and polished surfaces, notably on the three-link steel strap, ready to gleam when caught by the light. At the same time, these beautiful timepieces are built to withstand the rigours of everyday use, with a screw-down crown making them water-resistant to depths of 100 metres, a non-reflective sapphire crystal, and a robust double-clasp buckle equipped with two pushers to secure the watch firmly on the wrist for sports and urban wear. Simple, efficient, and readable On the dial, each of the three pieces features three central hands and a date window at 6 o’clock. Owners can tell the time effortlessly at any time of day or night: the hour and minute hands are luminous, as are the applique hour markers. Alpina connoisseurs will recognise the triangular counterweight on the seconds hand, a discreet reminder of the alpine summits that gave their name to the brand. Similarly, a subtle minute circle with Arabic numerals around the flange recalls the sporting lineage of the Alpiner Comtesse Quartz. When it comes to precision, the three new watches offer everything one expects of legendary Swiss Made accuracy thanks to a quartz movement powering the hours, minutes, seconds, and date functions and a battery life of nearly four years (45 months), making the timepiece the most faithful of companions for even the longest of adventures. • SIMON BURSTEIN ANNOUNCES NEXT BUSINESS VENTURES

Former Browns CEO Simon Burstein presents his latest project - Leathersmith of London - at Pitti Uomo 104, combining exquisite artisanal bookbinding with the fashion entrepreneur’s vision for contemporary menswear. © From June 13-16, Simon Burstein will be formally presenting his latest fashion and design venture - Leathersmith of London - to the international menswear audience at Pitti Uomo 104 in the Fortezza da Basso, Florence. Leathersmith of London is a truly unique proposition in the menswear space, grown from the luxury small leather goods space, and evolving to include at its core a contemporary menswear collection. From South Molton Street to Canvey Island, Essex After a hugely successful career building Browns (1970-1982 and 2008-2015 - his parents’ iconic South Molton Street stores) into a globally recognised fashion emporium, and in between heading Sonia Rykiel in Paris (1985-2007), the next chapter of Simon Burstein’s business story sees the entrepreneur amalgamate his passion for menswear, books and stationery, as he announces the relaunch of Charfleet Bookbindery on Canvey Island in the Thames Estuary, as well as the contemporary menswear and heritage brand, Leathersmith of London, which has been making diaries and journals since 1839. “When I sold Browns in 2015 to Farfetch, I had no idea I would end up owning a bindery business, but a series of serendipitous events combined with an unrealised love of artisanal bookmaking has led to where we are today, opening a brand-new state-of-the-art bindery facility on Canvey Island, saving a number of uniquely skilled roles, and relaunching a 184-year-old British Brand.” Bound by a love of craft T.J & J Smith was founded in 1839 (now under the name of Charfleet Bookbindery) and specialises in the production of stunning bespoke diaries, journals, notebooks, and leatherbound goods. In the 1950s, Edward Dudley Smith, who was the grandnephew of TJ & J Smith, travelled all over the United States to promote the Leathersmith of London brand and was so successful that he established offices in New York. He wore a bowler hat, carried an umbrella and looked like a traditional Englishman. The business was sold to H.Neale in 1987 who had built a bindery on Canvey Island after the Second World War. When the business went into administration in 2015, Burstein stepped in to acquire it, retaining the skilled artisan workforce (most of whom have two decades of experience) and moving them into new state-of-the-art premises on Canvey Island, to be officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh on 27 th June 2023. A heritage brand reborn Burstein first discovered the heritage stationer Leathersmith of London not long after having his passion for stationery was sparked by opening the first ever Filofax franchise shop during his tenure there in Paris. Then, as now, it specialises in beautiful, handcrafted diaries, journals and desk accessories. However, Burstein has ambitions to evolve Leathersmith of London into a lifestyle brand, firstly with a range of stylish and practical bags and small leather goods to be shown at Pitti Uomo in this June’23, and then featuring a relaxed and modern menswear collection informed by his many decades of experience working with some of the most talented designers in the world. “Despite being a heritage brand and existing for the best part of two centuries, when I discovered Leathersmith of London, it was largely unknown. It has given me the opportunity to do what I love the most, which is building brands, and so what is going to be really exciting is taking a business with such a long and storied history, and evolving it into a modern lifestyle proposition, all the while retaining its leather goods heritage.” Back to Simon’s (The) Place London - retail concept Central to Burstein’s vision for the Charfleet Bookbindery and Leathersmith of London are his retail stores, The Place London (a menswear and womenswear store a couple of doors down from each other) in Connaught Village and replicated in Paris in the heart of St Germain. The Place sees Burstein back in familiar territory, going back to his roots building a novel retail experience that showcases for women emerging fashion talent of any age and nationality, and for men, an incubator of artisanal craftsmanship under the Leathersmith of London brand. • Novak Djokovic wins the French Open

Novak Djokovic won the French Open, his 23rd Grand Slam ©Hublot What an historic moment! In Paris yesterday afternoon, Hublot ambassador Novak Djokovic won the French Open, his 23rd Grand Slam, making him the most successful player in tennis history. Nole becomes the first male tennis player to reach 23 slams, an astonishing record that may never be bettered. And he’s not done yet! Congratulations Nole! Nole’s most recent triumph is a further symbol of what he calls “inat”, a Serbian word that has no literal translation into English, but which characterises his relentless, courageous pursuit of excellence. Nole is a true warrior on court, never giving up, always fighting for every point, every win. And off court he’s the same, fully committed to his craft, his passions and of course to his family and friends. His spirit, humility and unique achievements make him a true inspiration, a one-of-a-kind. In all, he has won 94 career titles and is one of only eight men to have completed the Career Grand Slam, winning each of the four majors at least once, and one of only four to complete the Double Career Grand Slam. He is also the only male player to have held all four Grand Slam titles at once, and the only player in tennis history to have won all four Grand Slams, all nine ATP 1000 titles and the ATP Tour Finals. Even more remarkably, he has won them all at least twice. Congratulations Nole! What can we say! You are simply amazing! You are an inspiration, a source of enormous joy, a lionheart, the ultimate professional and a true friend. Every year you push yourself to new triumphs, proving you truly are first, different and unique. There’s no one like Nole! On behalf of everyone in the Hublot family, our heartiest and most sincere congratulations on your record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam, and wish you every success as your incredible journey continues. Enjoy this moment. Hublot loves Nole! RICARDO GUADALUPE HUBLOT CEO Novak Djokovic joined the Hublot family of ambassadors in 2021. He is a symbol of professionalism, sportsmanship and humility, and in striving to be the best and giving it everything in pursuit of his dreams, he embodies the same powerful values that define Hublot’s unique approach to fine watchmaking. He belongs to an illustrious club of Hublot ambassadors who have reached the peak of their sports. From Pelé, Usain Bolt, Alex Morgan, Kylian Mbappé, Dustin Johnson to Nole’s fellow Grand-Slam-winning tennis player Simona Halep, Hublot stands proudly alongside men and women who are champions on and off the field. Hublot is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1980 and based in Nyon. For its first ever timepiece, this fundamentally disruptive company combined gold with a rubber strap in a case with a design inspired by a ship’s porthole (hublot in French). Thus, the Art of Fusion was born, blending tradition, innovation, craftsmanship, worlds and talents. It became the brand's aesthetic and technical signature. This identity was strengthened in 2005 with the Big Bang, which attested to an unrivalled know-how in terms of complications, manufacture movements and state-of-the-art materials. Carbon, titanium, ceramic and sapphire have been developed on this model to technical extremes. Nole, 36, turned professional in 2003 and over the past two decades has rewritten tennis history, achieving what many thought impossible, defying the odds and overcoming adversity time and again with his iron will to become the greatest tennis player ever to pick up a racquet. He won his first Grand Slam in 2008 when he picked up the Australian Open title and in the years since, has amassed multiple all-time records, setting himself apart in the most competitive chapter in tennis history. As well as winning 23 Grand Slams, Nole has also spent more weeks as world number one than any other player, male or female, in history, and finished the year as the highest ranked men’s player a record seven times. He has won 38 ATP Masters 1000 titles, also more than any other player in history. BIG BANG UNICO FULL MAGIC GOLD: FULL GOLD, ZERO COMPROMISE A limited edition of 200 pieces to celebrate the fusion of two pillars of the Hublot universe: the Big Bang Unico, and the manufacture's Magic Gold alloy. Hublot loves to surprise, invent, innovate. We always expect more from the manufacture, in every possible domain: from the sapphire case, to the movement, complications and design, and, of course, the universe of its ambassadors. Only this time, with the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold, Hublot has returned to basics. Always first, unique and different: Magic Gold is the embodiment of this philosophy. The unique alloy has been sublimed in this limited edition of 200 pieces, where the Magic Gold is featured on both the case and bezel. Its hues are echoed on the indices, counters and hands, in satin-finished and microblasted 3N gold. The contrast with the rest of the components of the case is all the more powerful: the titanium pushers, guards, and screws and the rubber strap are all in the deepest black. It symbolises not only the marque’s technological leadership of the super-luxury sector, but that a bold electric future, first prophesised in 1900 by our founder, Charles Rolls, is now upon us. To attain its final, perfect form, Spectre has passed through our engineers’ ‘finishing school’ – and in so doing, completed the most demanding testing regime in our brand’s history, spanning 2.5 million kilometres and every conceivable extreme of temperature, weather, road type and surface condition. Equally importantly, it has also undergone our extensive Lifestyle Analysis testing. Applying our detailed knowledge of our clients' tastes, habits and requirements, this unique evaluation process ensures Spectre delivers an authentic, personal and effortless super-luxury experience, as well as true engineering substance, specific to the most demanding consumer group in the world – the Rolls-Royce client.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars “It is a highlight of my professional life to have developed Rolls-Royce Spectre, the car which propels Rolls-Royce into its bold, electric future. Such a remarkable car requires a remarkable testing programme and I am enormously proud that Spectre has now completed what has been the most arduous schedule ever conceived for a Rolls-Royce motor car. Indeed, it is where automotive manufacturers finish testing that so much of our work begins in fulfilling the requirements of the super-luxury consumer. This has been an extraordinary undertaking from a team of dedicated and highly skilled engineers that span both traditional technical disciplines and exciting emerging technologies. Rolls-Royce Spectre brings the future of this great marque into the present.” Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Director of Engineering, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ genre-defining all-electric super coupé, Spectre, has now concluded an historic and unique undertaking: a 2.5-million-kilometre testing programme simulating more than 400 years of use. In the most demanding development process in the marque’s 119-year history, Spectre has endured temperatures ranging from -40°C to +50°C, and in conditions spanning from Arctic snow and ice to deserts, high mountain passes and the world’s megacities. En route, every one of Spectre’s 141,200 digital sender-receiver relations and 25,000 performance-related functions has been minutely observed, analysed and tuned by Rolls-Royce engineers, a process representing over 50,000 collective driven hours of highly skilled work. This has resulted in thousands of iterative improvements in everything from Spectre’s acoustic performance, composure under cornering and steering precision to its charge time, electric range and torque delivery; each small in itself, but with an immense overall cumulative effect on the client experience. LIFESTYLE ANALYSIS As a Rolls-Royce, Spectre must be more than just an engineering tour de force – it must also offer clients an authentic super-luxury experience. It has therefore also been subjected to the marque's unique Lifestyle Analysis process, which has informed the development of every new product emanating from the marque’s home in its Goodwood era. This additional testing programme goes far beyond standard automotive assessments to encompass how clients will use the motor car in their daily lives. Lifestyle Analysis is based on the marque's detailed knowledge and understanding of the super-luxury consumer, and continuous intelligence-gathering across the luxury sector. It enables engineers to anticipate the very particular demands likely to be placed on a new Rolls-Royce and ensure that final engineered and fashioned experience incorporates appropriate features and responses. Using this knowledge, engineers have considered a range of variables of particular relevance to Rolls-Royce clients. For example, they have examined how Spectre’s drivetrain performs on specific roads in and around the world’s most exclusive enclaves, including: Sanya on Hainan Island, China; Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Napa Valley in California; and London, in the marque’s home market. This testing is not limited to performance under highway speeds. Specific city centre destinations are also used to ensure that features such as four-wheel steering offer the requisite manoeuvrability benefits to access areas roads and property approaches with limited space. Indeed, testing in and around the boroughs of Mayfair and Kensington and Chelsea, London, ensured the appropriate rear axle steering to approach key residential streets and luxury retail locations. Similarly, given the environments Spectre will be placed in worldwide, a large number of static testing procedures are undertaken that address key client concerns. These include if it is possible to hold a normal telephone conversation inside the motor car while it is parked alongside a waiting helicopter, the strength of the motor car’s in-car internet connection between specific skyscrapers, and ease of access when placing specific objects inside the motor car – the long garment bags used to protect formal evening suiting and gowns. As with the technical road testing, the Lifestyle Analysis phase of testing is in place to highlight necessary adjustments to the motor car's specification or performance. For example, after testing the power-assisted doors on an exceptionally steep hill – replicating the steep driveways common to the hills of Los Angeles, California – engineers added gyroscopic and G-force sensors to ensure that doors open and close at the same effortless speed, regardless of longitudinal or transverse parking angles. Additionally, one corner was used so frequently to test the steering precision of Spectre, which the marque’s engineers believe is the most exact in Rolls-Royce history, they have named a switchback within the environs of Rolls-Royce’s home in Goodwood, West Sussex, ‘Spectre Corner.’ Fittingly, it was during Lifestyle Analysis testing in London, the capital of Rolls-Royce’s home market, that Spectre completed its 2.5-million-kilometre odyssey in preparation for client deliveries, which will commence in the fourth quarter of this year. • Largest ruby at auction sells for record-breaking $34.8 million

This picture shows the world's largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered in September 2022. Courtesy of Sotheby's©. Estrela de Fura was cut from a rough stone that made headlines when it was unearthed by miners last July. Originally weighing 101 carats, almost twice as much as in its current form, it was the largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered. The huge stone was cut into a smaller symmetrical shape and polished, processes that remove impurities and enhance the color and brilliance of a gemstone before it is put onto the market. According to Sotheby’s, a report from the Swiss Gemmological Institute said that this had “resulted in vivid red hues due to multiple internal reflections.” Koh-i-Noor diamond to be recognized as ‘a symbol of conquest’ in exhibition In a statement, Fura Gems’ founder and CEO, Dev Shetty, said stones of such size and quality are “almost unheard of.” “From the in-depth analysis and study of the stone — through the process of cutting and polishing — we have worked with the utmost care and respect for the ruby, recognizing its importance and stature,” he added. Although rubies were first discovered in Mozambique several decades ago, a significant industry only emerged there after 2009, when a huge deposit of stones was found near the northern city of Montepuez. Mozambique is now one of the world’s most productive ruby-mining countries. Estrela de Fura was among the stones unearthed from the region. Sotheby’s described it as possessing “outstanding clarity” and a dark red color known as “pigeon’s blood” — a hue more traditionally associated with highly sought-after Burmese rubies. The auction house’s head of jewelry for the Americas, Quig Bruning, said in a statement that the ruby could help African stones compete with, “and even outshine” those from Myanmar (the country formerly known as Burma). The “ultra-rare” diamond was described by the auction house as possessing “unparalleled color and brightness.” Both precious stones were exhibited in various cities, including Dubai, Singapore and Geneva, before they were sold in New York.
