  • Kulm Hotel St. Moritz unveils £1.5 million suite renovation

The historic Kulm Hotel St. Moritz updates its largest guestroom to become resorts cosiest and arguably most modern The sunny Engadine Valley is dotted with the ultimate luxury, blending the best of Swiss hospitality's rich tradition. The time has finally come for the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, the resort's original hotel founded in 1856, to unveil the revamped Corvatsch Suite by internationally renowned French hotel designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The new Corvatsch Suite is icing on the cake following designer Rochon's elegant work at the Kulm's sister property, the nearby Grand Hotel Kronenhof, where guests could already experience the comfort and attention to detail in the property's newly refurbished rooms and suites, as we wrote in our Royal issue. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, Piz Nair Mountain view, all images courtesy of www.kulm.com Using tranquil elegant colours, premium materials and comfortable furnishings, while discreetly incorporating the latest technology, Pierre-Yves Rochon now updates the former Presidential Suite, featuring views out over Lake St. Moritz towards the Corvatsch mountain, which is owned by the same company that owns the hotel. Main Lobby Kulm Hotel While the overall style of the Corvatsch Suite can be described as contemporary Alpine chic, it is definitely the ancient Alps themselves that give the room its real wow factor. Located on the top floor of the hotel, the Suite’s wrap-around windows and two balconies simultaneously invite the stunning natural backdrop into the room and offer the most magnificent vistas out over the Engadine valley. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, the 176 square metre Corvatsch Suite by Pierre-Yves Rochon A reason for choosing regional suppliers was to minimise the travel miles of the re-design, but when furniture had to be brought in from further afield, sustainability was an important consideration. This resulted in the inclusion of the 1970s inspired dining chairs by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina, which have been engineered to be completely disassembled for ease of disposal and recycling of the organic premium materials, starting with the metal core. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, the Corvatsch Suite Similarly, the Little Petra sheepskin armchairs by Viggo Boesen in front of the fireplace are made from wood sourced from sustainable woods, adding to the luxury experience of staying in a £1.5 million (CHF 1.75 million) refurbished Suite. These sheepskin armchairs are the best place to sit, in front of a roaring log fire, on a crisp winter’s day with a glass of Champagne in hand, while the cosy corner seat beneath the window is the perfect spot to witness “blue hour”, when the mountains change colour from glistening white to icy blue as the sun sets after another fabulous day on the slopes. Master Bathroom, the Corvatsch Suite While the Corvatsch Suite has one bedroom, it can be connected to an adjacent Junior Suite, 43 square metres in size, that has been renovated in a very similar style, thereby creating one large apartment of 219 square metres, suitable for families. Winter rates for the Corvatsch Suite start from CHF6,100 (approx. £5,400) for two people on a half-board basis; while winter rates for the Corvatsch Suite and adjoining Junior Suite start from CHF8,800 (approx. £7,700) for four people on a half-board basis. To book, call +41 81 836 8000, email info@kulm.com or visit www.kulm.com Master Bathroom When renovating the Suite, Rochon focused heavily on using materials, manufacturers and craftsmen from Graubünden in order to give the room an authentic Alpine feel. For example, the bathroom has massive Valser granite basins, while Swiss stone pine wood has been used in the bathroom cladding and in the creation of a bench beneath the large corner window that is very typical of the Engadine region. Additionally, the artworks include a series of monochrome images taken by local photographer Gian Giovanoli of the valley, further strengthening the local connection. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Kulm Hotel St. Moritz has 164 rooms, six restaurants (including formal dining in the Grand Restaurant, the Italian Pizzeria with 14 Gault Millau points and local Engadine specialities at Chesa al Parc); the extensive Kulm Spa St. Moritz (with a 20m indoor pool with underwater music, various saunas and steam room, a Jacuzzi, a fullyequipped gym and treatment rooms, all with stunning views over Lake St. Moritz); and six conference rooms, with capacities ranging from 50 to 500 people. • Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama

Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama unveil Mens Ready to Wear, bags, shoes and accessories Maison LOUIS VUITTON proudly unveils the continuation of the collaboration with YAYOI KUSAMA. The Japanese avant-garde artist is known worldwide for her hypnotic and colorful art. True to her signature, which she has preserved over the years, she uses her motifs in endless succession and in this way conquers the entire space. LOUIS VUITTON last met the magical art of YAYOI KUSAMA in 2012. But this relationship never ended - ten years later the sequel followed. A first glimpse of the collaboration between LOUIS VUITTON and YAYOI KUSAMA was given in May 2022 in San Diego during the LOUIS VUITTON Cruise 2023 show. In line with LOUIS VUITTON's artistic collaborations, the encounter between the Maison and YAYOI KUSAMA is based on openness, iconoclasm and, above all, on a mutual appreciation of craftsmanship and excellence over the everyday. The collaboration, which embraces both the women's and men's worlds in the form of ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, accessories, luggage, suitcases and fragrances, is divided into two drops with different thematic directions, all following the iconic ones Motifs by YAYOI KUSAMA. The motif of the PAINTED DOTS is the origin of this project. The Dots are a direct translation of YAYOI KUSAMA's artistic signature through an intricate technique of screen printing and embossing onto leather or iconic coated canvas. The METAL DOTS collection is an expression of infinity, inspired by YAYOI KUSAMA's reflecting spheres - a motif known from her daffodil garden shown (unofficially) at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966. The PAINTED DOTS later transform into the better-known INFINITY DOTS. It is the artist's most popular motif and as a collection, one that includes the most pieces across all product categories for both women and men, appearing in both Drop 1 and Drop 2. Another of Kusama's passions is flowers; the fleeting beauty of the ephemeral is contrasted with the sense of the eternal and infinite. The collaboration between LOUIS VUITTON and YAYOI KUSAMA is celebrated in a fully immersive visual landscape ranging from window displays to pop-ups to animated billboards, AR experiences, an XR game and a proprietary advertising campaign. LOUIS VUITTON x YAYOI KUSAMA Drop 1 will be launched worldwide on January 6th. All images courtesy of www.louisvuitton.com

  • Engadin Art Talks in Swiss Altitude

Engadin Art Talks takes place in conjunction to Davos, Switzerland, however the topic is art but with the same aim of benefiting humanity and development. Since over ten years the E.A.T. / Engadin Art Talks takes place at the Halle am Plazzet in Zuoz every year at the end of January. Each year, a new topic determines the framework for the talks. The Engadin region is renowned throughout the world for its magnificent scenery, winter sports and the glamour of St Moritz. What is often forgotten, however, is that the Engadin was always a prominent location for art and artists, philosophy and dialogue, with prominent visitors, artists and thinkers passing through and residing in the region. The mission is to bridge and integrate art, architecture and landscape with a holistic visitor’s experience. HOFFNUNG? HOFFNUNG!, the upcoming event that translates as HOPE? HOPE!, encourages a deeper understanding of hope as an intrinsically human state of mind and as a fundamental driving force. The weekend’s public programme sees the participation of international speakers from within and outside the creative field, thus enhancing a plurality of voices. Participating speakers include artists, architects and landscape architects, authors, scientists, sustainability and humanitarian experts whose practice deals with the environment and notions of togetherness, both physical and verbal. The gathering in Zuoz covers a range of topics that span from the artistic practices of some contemporary artists, the exploration of humanitarian, social, cultural, and political issues, the search for novel responses to the climate change crisis, and the investigation of new visions of our social lives. The curatorial team that defines the respective topic consists of Daniel Baumann, Director Kunsthalle Zürich, Bice Curiger, artistic Director Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director Serpentine Gallery London, Philip Ursprung, Professor of Art and Architectural History ETH Zürich. Thus, over the past eight years, more than 290 international artists, architects, designers and writers have come to us as guests and presented their projects, ideas and visions on the defined theme. E.A.T. / Engadin Art Talks were founded by Cristina Bechtler together with Hans Ulrich Obrist. The correspondence between the members of the Crystal Chain, a group comprising twelve architects and artist established in winter 1919 by Bruno Taut, provides a theoretical basis for the E.A.T. / Engadin Art Talks — as well as the theme of the first event in 2010. After the First World War, the members of the group wanted to develop new ideas and utopias, and thus establish the foundations for an architecture of the future. The medium they used to communicate was a chain letter in which ideas, drafts and drawings were circulated and discussed under pseudonyms. Their aim was to foster belief and community symbolically through (imaginary) ceremonial buildings.

  • The 6th EU-GCC Business Forum in Brussels

The 6th EU-GCC Business Forum Concludes in Brussels with Leading Speakers from Europe and the GCC Business and government leaders from the European Union and the GCC came together at the 6th EU-GCC Business Forum discussing how best to drive the post-pandemic recovery in the EU and the GCC towards a green and digital future. The event took place at the Residence Palace, Brussels, and included interactive panel discussions that covered different topics relating the overall theme of the Forum ‘People, Place, Prosperity: Rebuilding After the Pandemic’. Opening the Forum, Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Union said “The EU is fully committed to strengthening economic ties between our two regional blocs. By developing our areas of mutual interest, by working in a more collaborative way, we can achieve real benefits. We have great shared potential to build more resilient, sustainable and efficient economic models. Such transformations can deliver great advantages for our citizens, our businesses, and our natural environment.”. Speakers from Europe and the GCC discussed the potential future business opportunities in sessions covering topics such as The New Concept of Industry 5.0 and the Evolution of the Fourth Industrial Revolution; Maximising Business Opportunities from the Green Deal and Circular Economy and Innovation; Digitalisation and Creativity – How Policy Makers Can Spur Innovation in the Digital Economy. A dedicated session was also held on Trade & Investment Opportunities with speakers discussing how to generate more trade through removing regulatory and other barriers. “The possibilities are huge for more EU-GCC economic cooperation, trade and investment in an increasingly green and digitalised global economy. We should tap on the full potential of this emerging new dimension of cooperation between our regions. I am sure that today’s impressive EU-GCC Business Forum will contribute to this objective in a significant and tangible way” said Mr. Leopoldo Rubinacci, Deputy Director General, Directorate-General for Trade, European Commission. Dr. Abdel Aziz Abu-Hamad Aluwaisheg, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Negotiations at the Gulf Cooperation Council said in his opening speech, “The relationship between the EU and the GCC has significantly grown over the past 35 years, and in May this year, the EU announced the joint communication to the European Parliament and the Council with the Gulf, stressing further the importance of this relationship. Despite difficult circumstances, GCC economies have done very well in 2022, passing a major milestone in their history. For the first time, their combined GDP exceeded $2 trillion, making the GCC the 9th largest economy worldwide. Saudi Arabia’s GDP alone is above $1 trillion. While the overall picture is optimistic, even uplifting, there are many challenges ahead, especially the risk of global recession, which means that both policy makers and business leaders need to double their efforts to avoid local recessions or reduce their effects.” Overall, the business forum highlighted various opportunities for future enhancement of trade and investment between the two regions including, · The Panel on People discussed how the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 has a direct impact on how we will work and live. Industry 5.0‘s focus on social and environmental sustainability & its human-centredness has transformational potential, also increases the complexity and risks associated with this transition which need to be properly managed towards a new growth paradigm. The EU and GCC can partner on exchanging educational and professional development approaches and lessons learned to prepare their workforce. The EU can share lessons learned with regards to social protection to secure stability in times of transition while creatively exploring new pathways with GCC partners. · The Panel of Place discussed the way we live will further transform which requires new infrastructure, including physical spaces, but also for how we travel, communicate, and consume. The green and digital transitions will continue to open new pathways for leveraging a new growth paradigm –one which reconciles economic growth, social stability, and environmental protection. Innovation is the foundational mindset for the green and digital economy which needs to be fostered by both business and policy leaders. The Panel of Prosperity discussed how the pandemic has highlighted the need for greater resilience of the physical dimensions of the global economy. Increasing globalisation and localisation are two opposing forces which will influence economic activities in the near-to-medium future. Digital transformation has become further accelerated by the pandemic, which –amongst other factors -led to the emergence of Industry 5.0. Creativity –through its connection to innovation –will be a key dimension · to ensure long-term prosperity in an increasingly complex world. Partnerships between the EU and GCC will be key to enhancing prosperity for both regions; information and experience exchange are thus essential moving forward to rebuilding after the pandemic. · The Panel on Investment Facilitation discussed how both the EU and GCC have engaged in reform efforts to facilitate FDI. However, there is still untapped potential for both sides. New business models and products, as for example. those connected to the green and digital transition, have opened up new investment opportunities but also have highlighted a need for new standards as well as enhanced public scrutiny. Ongoing dialogue and action between the EU and the GCC need to be enhanced to foster investments and strategic partnerships both at a business and governmental level; on the latter there is a regular Trade and Investment Dialogue with the GCC which is being further enhanced. The planned establishment of an EU Chambers of Commerce in the GCC will facilitate the business-to-business level contacts.

  • Interview: Michel Ghatan, Wildlife Photography

Michel Ghatan initiates a partnership with Fauna and Flora International (FFI) to raise money for conservation programs by auctioning artworks By Liliya Tippets Michel Ghatan's recent solo exhibition Michel Ghatan: From Kilimanjaro to The Virunga Mountains, showcasing the majestic wildlife photography was curated by Helen Ho, at Alon Zakaim fine art gallery in London. The exhibition spanned the photographer’s career to date, from his most celebrated image of the late big Tusker, Tim, to his most recent portraits of the Nyakagezi gorilla family in The Virunga Mountains. Since first travelling to Tanzania in 2010, Michel has been in love with the East African wildlife, seeking its beauty and remoteness which contrasts his city life. Michel has spent the decade since this first visit further exploring Tanzania, Botswana, Uganda and Kenya, all the while developing his unique photographic process which is a testament to his passion for the wilderness. This October Michel participated at Sotheby's inaugural Impact Gala in New York, where one of Michel photographs got auctioned for USD16'500 benefiting Sebastião Salgado's Instituto Terra Foundation. Michel Ghatan. Courtesy all images, Michel Ghatan Photography London. He uses local tribesmen including Maasai, Kikuyu and Samburu warriors as trackers, often on walking safaris – the purest method of meeting and photographing wild animals. Rather than relying on telephoto lenses and remote controls, which would allow him to work from the comfort of a Jeep, the majority of Michel’s photographs are taken on foot with a 35mm lens, often taken as close as two meters from his subjects. Photographing mountain gorillas is a notoriously difficult task – these magnificent animals (who happen to share 98% of human DNA) live in what is known as “impenetrable forests”, an intensely dense terrain with poor visibility and humid tropical climate. Over four days, trekking about six hours per day, at an altitude of 2,800 metres, Michel and his team of rangers and trackers focused on a family of gorillas that originated from Rwanda. This family is particularly unique for its high number of silverbacks (three). Given the endangered status of mountain gorillas, photographers like Michel are only allowed one hour per day with the gorillas, which makes it even more challenging. When photographing nature, the viewer receives the message more unfiltered. What is your primary intention with this series of photographs? Michel Ghatan: Traditionally, I have always taken portraits of animals in their state of being, while trying to establish a close communication between me and the subject. When you are dealing with wild animals everything is on their terms, not mine. It requires perfect preparation, understanding of nature and patience. Usually, time is on your side if you manage those elements. Measuring the distance between you and the animal whilst predicting his behaviour as well as what he is allowing you to do is a big part of what I do. With gorillas, the challenge is very different. On one hand the animal is the closest species to humans in terms of DNA but on the other you have only one hour a day with them. No matter how long the trek is. So, you are stuck between this feeling of seeing “someone” similar to you and racing against time. I think the result speaks for itself. Those images of mountain gorillas are a mirror to human behaviours. You have visited Africa as a photographer during the past decade. What developments struck you most and how has your approach changed over the time? Michel Ghatan: It’s an interesting question. The years I started visiting Africa were right after a terrible drought that affected almost every country on the eastern side of the continent. Kenya for instance, lost a lot of elephants because of drought and poaching accelerated to unprecedented levels as a consequence. Those terrible years were followed by significant positive conservation efforts and the situation got much better to the point poaching got under control until Covid struck. Covid had a terrible impact over the world of course but in Africa it got even worse. I went multiple times to Kenya in 2020-2021 and the parks were completely empty. I felt it was my duty to support them as much as possible. Villagers with zero income facing a choice between starvation or poaching. Governments weren’t prepared for this. Unfortunately, 2022 seems to be another year of terrible drought. People’s resilience is constantly put at test even when doing the right thing is in their blood. How do you intend to continue your work in Africa and promote awareness about endangered species on the continent? Michel Ghatan: Africa has given me the opportunity to express my artistic needs through photography and I feel embedded to protect it. I am planning to return early November this year to photograph elephant groups in desertic conditions. Currently, I am doing a partnership with Fauna and Flora International (FFI) to raise money for conservation programs by auctioning artworks that were presented during my latest exhibition in London: “From Kilimanjaro to The Virunga Mountains” at Alon Zakaim Fine art gallery.

  • Lewis Hamilton Formula 1 Reflections

Sir Lewis Hamilton demanded that GPDA members were more involved in the conversation as he claimed drivers can help the sport's future On 17. November 2022 Lewis Hamilton in Abu Dhabi athlete wore cotton-silk shirt and lila pants with bag by LOUIS VUITTON. Sir Lewis Hamilton has been at the pinnacle for Formula 1 for over a decade now, the Briton rising through the karting and junior formula ranks to 7-time world champion having climbed 190 podiums in his career so far. The athlete is also outspoken on matters that concern race and work enviroment and well-beeing. Now Jackie Stewart has called on F1 bosses to give more power to the Grand Prix Drivers' Association weeks after similar comments from Lewis Hamilton. The three-time world champion said the GPDA should “have more influence” over decisions surrounding the sport. He stressed the body was “much more powerful” when he was chairman of the organisation, according to Express Sport, The group was instrumental in removing the Nurburgring from the calendar after 1976 and also helped organise a driver's strike at the 1982 South African Grand Prix. The organisation was eventually disbanded but reformed after the death of Roland Ratzenberger at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Members meet at most events but the group has lost much of its power when it comes to making key decisions over the sport. The GPDA outlined their dissatisfaction with the sport in a letter to F1 bosses back in 2016. A few years later in 2019, Lewis Hamilton argued that drivers should have more of a say over the new 2022 regulations. He hit back at F1 for allowing the regulations to be decided by “people with power” while the drivers get little say. Hamilton demanded that GPDA members were more involved in the conversation as he claimed drivers can help the sport's future. The Mercedes star also called for the GPDA to have more influence after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. All 20 drivers sat down for a meal ahead of the season finale in a send-off for Sebastian Vettel, prompting Hamilton to outline the possible future of the organisation. The Briton explained: "Maybe we will make this an annual thing here, and maybe we will add another one in the year, but there is a lot we can do as the GPDA, as a united group.
