  • Interview: luxury menswear house LACINO

The luxury menswear house LACINO unveils its bejeweled bow ties and premium leather goods. Established in 2019 with a timeless essence, LACINO is the passion project of founder and president Vincent Cuvelier and his associate Tracy Saab, together they bring the modernity of the automotive industry and the endurance of luxury goods. When was luxury menswear house LACINO founded and what is LACINO renowned for? The name and the inspiration started in 2018 by the founder of the brand Vincent Cuvelier. The goal was to be able to work on the bow ties in complete safety and create a luxury jewel for men from a classic product. LACINO means: L for luxury, ACI for the raw material “Acier” which was used to create the first bow tie and NO for Noeud Papillon. And in 2021, his partner Tracy Saab joined the brand and they subsequently expanded the structure of the company so that they could develop it together and start a path towards derivatives of products other than the bow tie such as leather goods and a line of conduct on luxury, but commercial products, that will give the house an advantage and additional access to the global market, through the alliance of carbon, leather, and precious stones connecting to the automobile and the LACINO product. Being a newly established brand, what channels do you rely on for branding and communication with customers? The LACINO house is really targeted at a niche clientele for jewellery but also for leather goods. Although the product is placed in the niche and luxury market, the prices of leather goods remain accessible in the luxury price range. On the commercial steps, the house sets out to meet Club Privé, to collaborate with car dealers, as well as the most prestigious concept or pop-up stores, to give the brand the value it deserves. Who are the founders of the brand and what is their background and the philosophy behind the brand? Vincent Cuvelier, founder of the LACINO brand and creator of the bow tie, has always been fond of the field of automobiles and automobile design. He knew by his creation and his work dedicated to this sector and its technology to develop a luxury product and a masculine accessory, a prestigious jewel for men. In 2018, the idea of reworking the bow tie and developing the idea was obvious to him. This automobile enthusiast focused during these first years on the meticulous work that he could give to a product, an innovative jewel, a soul and a poetic story between man and the alliance of the automobile. He studied, worked, and researched this new concept in order to achieve satisfaction with the result of the jewel he wanted to give. He continues until today working every day on the improvement of this precious jewel. Tracy Saab fell in love with the bow tie and joined the brand as a partner in the development of the house with her feminine touch, her creation and her vision for the future of the brand's image. Following fashion school in Paris specializing in model making and style, she worked in many French couture houses abroad in ready-to-wear and luxury leather goods which she was able to develop due to her experiences and travels around the world in the technical field, but also the creation of collections. She knew how to learn from the richness of each culture and created a strength for the vision of all the projects she undertook. What is unique about LACINO’s diamond bow ties? The quality of manual work. A Made in France product manufactured in the LACINO offices and in the workshops in the region. The manipulation of the jewel, the design, the cutting and the work by hand, makes the bow tie exclusive and not common. Each piece is unique to the person who creates and chooses it. GIA-certified, we give a quality to our product that puts us on the list of a niche concept with our customers. The alliance of precious stones with rare metals is embodied in the product range of bow ties. LACINO’s diamond bow ties are GIA certified, designed as a work of art and paired with a unique collar in full-grain calfskin of a natural pigmentation. How many different styles are in LACINO’s Collection and what is unique about the materials and production process? Today LACINO has two ranges of products, the jewel which is defined by the bow tie and the range of luxury leather goods. The two lines are linked to the alliance of the automobile and luxury. The house has combined the two products to make them collector's items. Can you elaborate on this aspect of standards please: “In a luxury sector that is slowly adapting to preserving the planet, LACINO’s conscious approach employs Italian skin and linings treated without chemicals and toxic products which follow a natural pigmentation treatment.”? The LACINO house is aware today of the environmental problems that affect the world. Environmental restriction standards were LACINO's priority wish. LACINO's collaborators are placed in a close geographical area accordingly, and the raw materials are worked in the most sensitive way to comply with the legality of European standards. The Made in France aspect is cherished by Maison LACINO with its CE marking, which guarantees the conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards, and a French savoir-faire. In a luxury sector that is slowly adapting to preserving the planet, LACINO’s conscious approach employs Italian skin and linings treated without chemicals and toxic products which follow a natural pigmentation treatment. The scraps are collected, up-cycled and reused for bowtie necklaces and small leather goods. Where is LACINO's new collection available now? For the moment our LACINO products are present on the website: www.lacino.fr and soon in concept and pop-up stores between France and the Arab Gulf countries for the Christmas holiday period. Tracy Saab & Vincent Cuvelier LACINO offers its clientele bespoke services and the customization and personalization of limited- edition products. • London’s The Savoy hotel: courtesy of Gucci

After refurbishing hotel's Royal suite Gucci has inaugurated an ephemeral space dedicated to its world of travel entitled Gucci Valigeria inside London’s The Savoy hotel. It is precisely in travel that Gucci finds its origins, as part of a story that began in the late 1800s when a young Guccio Gucci journeyed to London and worked as a porter at The Savoy, the go-to destination for the international jet set. There, he came into contact with the magic of travel that, at the time, was synonymous with discovery, discussion, study, and a bridge between diverse cultures. It was a time in which traveling signified experience, displacing the certainties of one’s social environment, a pursuit of the unexpected, of a will to encounter and to know. Inspired by his observations of the guests and the beautiful items that accompanied them, Guccio returned to Florence and founded his own artisanal luggage atelier in 1921. The Gucci Valigeria space at The Savoy showcases a curated selection from Gucci’s travel offering including trunks, trolleys, duffle bags, suitcases, garment bags, and other smaller items, many of which are part of the heritage-infused Gucci Savoy collection, featured in the recently revealed campaign featuring Ryan Gosling. Also displayed are pieces from the Gucci Lifestyle line, ranging from travel sets and stationery to pet accessories. #GucciValigeria The Savoy Strand London WC2R 0EU Opening Hours Monday to Saturday, 10am–7pm Sunday, 12pm– 6pm Founded in Florence, Italy, in 1921, Gucci is one of the world’s leading luxury brands, led by President and CEO Marco Bizzarri and Creative Director Alessandro Michele. Following the House’s centenary, Gucci forges ahead into the next hundred years, continuing to redefine luxury while celebrating the creativity, Italian craftsmanship, and innovation at the core of its values. Gucci is part of the global luxury group Kering, which manages the development of a series of renowned Houses in fashion, leather goods, jewelry and watches.

Photo: Ken Adlard Works in the auction Donated artworks include Avery Singer’s ‘Happening’ (2022), a new work expanding on Singer’s dynamic visual rhetoric that employs the binary language of computer programs and industrial materials while engaging with the tradition of painting, as well as Glenn Ligon’s ‘Study for Negro Sunshine (Red) #63’ (2022)—a striking example of the artist’s celebrated body of text-based works in which he stencils text from Gertrude Stein’s 1909 novella ‘Three Lives.’ A new work on paper by George Condo titled ‘Invasion’ made this year is also part of the selection. Additional paintings include Rashid Johnson’s ‘Bruise Painting “Pure Love”’ (2021), an exemplary work from Johnson’s new series; Angel Otero’s highly textural and powerful painting ‘Curtains of a Silent Window’ (2022); an otherworldly painting by Anj Smith titled ‘Untitled (Mayday)’ (2011-2020); Rita Ackermann’s ‘Red Dots’ (2022); a Grid Painting from Günther Förg from 2006, as well as ‘Crossings: East West Tunnel’ (2011), an outstanding example of Frank Bowling’s ‘Crossing’ series and his ongoing exploration of the materiality of paint. • BYRNE Watches presents the GyroDial Version Sport

On the occasion of the WatchPro show in London, BYRNE Watches presents the 'GyroDial Version Sport'. A watch that changes its dial every day? BYRNE was born from the mind of an enthusiast who created a watch with multiple faces: the Byrne GyroDial. Every night at midnight, or at whim, smooth and swift, the four indices, at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock, change their appearance in a flash. Three months ago, in Geneva, during the Geneva Watch Days, Byrne Watches made a sensation by unveiling a new concept: a watch that changes its face every day, depending on the mood, thanks to 4 indexes that appear each time different, on the dial. Today, on the occasion of its first participation in the WatchPro show in London, Byrne Watches presents the GyroDial in a Sport version. The GyroDial Sport, it's the freedom to have a watch that changes its face every day, without asking any questions. Racy, the watch face juggles numbers in a "Sports Jersey" style, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals and invisibility... the whole is completed by a winding button engraved with the symbolic number 1 - because in sport, you always want to be the first, don't you? The GyroDial Sport, cut from a block of Grade 5 titanium, 100% Swiss Made, is a watch that plays with appearances, has fun with moods, and which, thanks to its dial with multiple faces, offers its wearer the feeling of a different watch every day. The Byrne GyroDial Sport or change its dial and personality in an instant. This explains its motto "Change your mind in a flash". The GyroDial Sport, a watch that changes its personality every morning. One watch, four appearances offered to you, without anything to do, every morning. Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, invisible dial or Sport dial with numbers inspired by sports jerseys enhanced with SuperLuminova... Thanks to its custom-made movement, Byrne invents the watch whose dial changes mood every day. Every night at midnight, or on demand, the four main indexes of the GyroDial dial change, carried by rotating cubes, with an instantaneous jump, which are flush with the surface of the dial. Under the impetus of its creator John Byrne, three years of research and development in Fleurier, Switzerland, were necessary to give birth to this patented animation complication. The caliber 5555, was entirely designed, developed and manufactured in Switzerland for the GyroDial Sport. With its long, supple curves made of titanium, the dial with its hand-stretched finish presents a contemporary and very racy aesthetic. A watch, 1 dial, 4 faces. The Byrne GyroDial and GyroDial Sport are a radical break from this time-honoured equation. In this day and age, everything is interchangeable and constantly changing. There was no reason for the mechanical watch to remain an exception in the new reality. Byrne Watches watch creations is a response to a societal observation. The Byrne GyroDial features interchangeable indexes at the four cardinal points of its dial. As they change, they change the spirit of the dial by their size, revealing in turn the spirit of a new kind of watch. As radical as it is instantaneous and perfectly controlled, the rotation on the dial turns into a revolution in the wearing, as if having a different on the wrist every day, or whenever for that matter. Instantaneously. This explains the motto of the Byrne GyroDial: “Change your mind in a flash”. Premise Created by John Byrne following an extensive journey of technical and philosophical maturation, the GyroDial unequivocally bears the stamp of its originator. A designer by training, he very early on chanced upon collector's watches. Thanks to a series of fortunate encounters, he found himself a hunter of timekeeping rarities. Thus mandated by the greatest brands intent on reconstituting their heritage through acquisitions, he developed and cultivated the keenest eye for the fundamentals of watchmaking excellence. He fully immersed himself in this world, is fully connected with it. On a parallel track, he acquired a watch repair and refurbishing workshop, which soon earned the seal of approval from the most renowned Manufactures. This new facet of his professional life inspired John Byrne to add the ambition of technical sophistication to his natural inclinations as a designer. GyroDial was born out of an epiphany. Creative processes are sometimes laborious, sometimes dazzling, often a mix of both. It was the latter that led to Byrne’s inaugural watch creation. One evening while attending a performance of George Balanchine's ballet Apollo musagetes at the Paris Opera, he witnessed the strangest scene: Four dancers changed their outfits almost instantaneously, as if they collided; the quartet became a single dancer with four different appearances. That summer evening, as he descended the monumental staircase of the Palais Garnier, something clicked. John Byrne was going to create a watch with four faces. So much for the dazzling. The longest, the most important and most time-consuming part was yet to come: developing the watch. Impulse In the hours following the ballet performance, John Byrne returned to his studio and immediately set to work. Movements and tools in hand, in the middle of the night, he undertook the first verifications that told him that his concept of an interchangeable face was at all possible, even feasible. The birth of GyroDial was a process that took more than four years, from initial research to sketches to successful search for suitable partners – to final delivery of the piece. The maturation of the project finally materialised: the GyroDial and the GyroDial Sport, titanium watches measuring 41.7 mm in diameter and 14.8 mm in thickness, with taut, modern lines. On their grey or blue dial, four windows that offer as many possibilities for the display, the face, the expression. Underneath, a calibre created-to-measure and manufactured in Fleurier comprising four rotating blocks. At midnight, or at whim, they rotate instantaneously to present a different face. Individuality But what would be the point of offering four faces instead of one if they in turn are also imposed, unchangeable? Absolutely consistent with the spirit of the GyroDial and its reality, Byrne imagines the GyroDial Sport with its 4 faces, one of which is directly inspired by the numbers flocked on sports jerseys. 45 steps are required to make the complete dial, which is entirely finished by hand. The path of least resistance…cutting corners…doing things by halves. Concepts that are inconceivable to John Byrne. It would have been much simpler to start with an existing, straightforward calibre with a date disc and modify the latter. A controlled rotating ring, with rapid leaps, would have made it possible to avoid myriad complications. But this would have fallen quite a way short of Byrne's aesthetic vision. For one thing, a date disc is necessarily set back from the dial. John Byrne's design is that of a perfectly smooth dial, the cardinal indexes are perfectly flush. Nothing betrays the face-changing operation, nothing hints at anything but the appearance one expects of a watch...until the next change. This seamless surface, with no edges or indentations, results from the perfect fit and fill of the rotating blocks within their respective windows. The handmade hands echo the dial, with a drawn line finish and SuperLuminova. This same seamlessness of design follows through with the case and the way it extends to the sapphire box crystal that tops it. Fundamentals On the other hand, the initial intention, rooted in the imagination whence sprung the dance that inspired John Byrne absolutely requires that the shift from one block face to the next be absolutely instantaneous. This is not only a technical must; it is also an artistic requisite. As is often the case in watchmaking, grace, style and identity are ultimately the expression of purely mechanical fundamentals, which must be mastered and made invisible at the same time. This called for not only an entirely new development on the complication front, but also for a perfectly adapted basic calibre for the GyroDial. Indeed, quite a large amount of energy needs to be generated to operate each cardinal index display module, a continuous process as it needs to again accumulate for the next shift. Experiences It is for all these reasons that Byrne turned to his watchmaking partner Le Temps Manufacture in Fleurier. Le Temps Manufacture works discreetly for some of the greatest names in Swiss watchmaking who entrust the specialist workshop with special, particularly complex projects. John Byrne had been running a watch refurbishment and repair workshop for many years, so he knew what worked and what didn’t, what could bring a specific function to life and what might stifle it. After many fruitless searches, he finally found the partner who understood his vision and was able to transform it into a fully operational calibre, in every respect. Le Temps Manufacture delivered it: the calibre 5555. This 30 mm movement is self-winding and offers 60 hours of power reserve. Precision As each rotating block of the movement has the task of displaying one of four faces on the dial, the physical and aesthetic interaction between indices and dial was the subject of very special care and attention during development. First of all, their relative positioning leaves no room for approximation. Each index must be on the same plane as the dial, without even the slightest offset. It must very precisely fill the space of the window reserved for it in the dial plate – and precisely find its position after each “jump”, that is to say tens of thousands of times in the life of a GyroDial Sport. Continuity No gaps, no machining irregularities, a perfectly smooth transition between dial and index face – times four, meticulous centring of the axes... the finish of each rotating block had to be irreproachable because the surface of each cardinal index displayed at a given time must present a seamless continuation of the dial’s surface. This also means that each block face must have the absolute same texture and grain as the dial. Spirit As if mirroring what lies beneath, the dial presents a finish traditionally seen on the movement: a sweeping straight grain satin finish. It is executed in a single pass to ensure a perfect alignment of the myriad grooves that create the particular texture and its play with light. It gives GyroDial Sport, a sporty, dynamic, modern aesthetic – a hallmark of the Byrne identity. At the very end of the manufacturing process, the dial undergoes a galvanic treatment to dye it in slate grey or blue. Housing Together, the movement and the dial are housed in the GyroDial Sport case. A case created entirely in Switzerland for this model, entirely original, making no reference to any icon, any canon. It was conceived by John Byrne, who studied at a design school. With its curved profile, the case is as much an original work as the complexities it houses. First carved from a block of titanium, it is entirely Swiss made. Fluidity Fluid, even biomorphic, the case form stands out by the tautness of its lines, tense arcs that extend from lug to lug, far from facile indeed. Instead of one through line, the case presents several, harmoniously staggered between the different layers of this original construction. And as if to make them easier to apprehend, these various levels of perception are underlined by variations in finish. Titanic Such was the task of creating and machining the case. The case middle is satin-finished whilst the upper part of the case, between the case middle and the bezel, is entirely polished. The operation may seem trivial, but it is notoriously difficult to perform on the ultra-resistant metal that is titanium. Among the many advantages of its grade 5 variant, there is one that can be grasped and felt immediately: Despite its generous proportions, the watch barely reaches 100 grams on the scale. The second is rarer, as titanium is hardly ever presented in this polished form: the finish and brilliance of the GyroDial’s case are quite unique. Harmony The bezel, slim and clean-cut, effectively counterbalances the impression of thickness. An inevitable consequence of using rotating blocks, it has been reduced to the minimum possible by the state-of-the-art in watchmaking and, by the magic of design, attenuated to almost the point of imperceptibility by the visual artifice that is the intelligence in the drawing. Indeed, the case design was the subject of an intense and thorough ergonomic study. It ensures perfect comfort, its soft curves following those of the wrist. The result is a slender, taut profile, with outward-reaching lugs flowing in line with the case middle. The GyroDial Sport is completed by a winding button symbolically engraved with the number 1, the highest step of the podium. Connection This approach necessarily flowed into designing the strap. It was impossible to leave little thought to the element that keeps the watch to the wrist after having put so much care into creating the case, movement, dial and, above all, the underlying concept. Hand-crafted by the specialised workshop of Jean Rousseau and entirely to Byrne's specifications, the strap is either saddle-stitched rubber or alligator, the latter with large scales. It contains two rigid inserts, placed in an interlining as close as possible to the lug width. These inserts again form a curve that naturally settles the GyroDial Sport on the wrist. It is on this stage that the watch changes costume every night at midnight, like a relay runner passing the baton to his teammate.

  • DISCOVERING OLD DUBAI

Text & Photographs by Carlos Mundy Al Fahidi Fort When I wrote my novel The Toucan Lodge based on my father’s unfinished memoires as an MI6 spy, my then agent suggested that I include a chapter on Dubai in the 40s. I followed the suggestion and wrote a full chapter called Abduction in the Dessert that was pure fiction but linked perfectly well to the novel’s story line. I had been to Dubai a few times before but had not visited old Dubai thus had to write the chapter by researching the story of the Trucial States, which is how the Emirates were known until 1968 when the British government decided to withdraw from its involvement in the Trucial States. This was followed by the creation of a Federation that is now the United Arab Emirates. Hotel Lounge area Abra boats The abra jetty at Al-Seef Not so many of Dubai’s visitors, the city famous for its luxury and skyline, are aware that it has a rich historic culture. This Emirati lifestyle and heritage originate from Old Dubai. In Dubai, old indeed is gold. Old Dubai has been an intersection for all the civilizations that Dubai has experienced. And I have just had the opportunity to for the first time to visit and familiarise myself with the part of the city where it all began. Old Dubai comprises of a lot of different places. From Garhound on the North to Deira on the South, it spreads over a wide space of land. Al Seef I stayed at the Golden Sands Hotel Creek; a Boutique 5 Star Hotel located in the heritage heart of the city. With 150 luxurious Suites & Rooms, the Hotel provides an ideal base to take in a unique perspective of Dubai’s history. As soon as I was comfortably installed in my suite with wonderful views of the Creek, I walked to the Abra station from where I took a local small passenger abra to start my time travel in the historical quarter for a cost of 2 UAED. Once the entryway to the Gulf’s most successful pearl diving port, the Creek’s legendary presence is still felt today as fisherman and merchants criss-cross the calm waters in their traditional dhows. The first step of my little adventure was The Bastakiya Quarter that gets its name from Bastak, Iran, the origin of many of the original textile and pearl traders who first plied their trades. As you walk through the Bastakiya Quarter’s narrow winding lanes, you will also notice another contribution from Bastak in the form of its architecture. The wind towers that topmost of the buildings are a testament to this, as well as the beautifully carved wooden doors and wooden lattices. Harud Al-Hadid Archaeological Museum Today, the Quarter is home to many fine art galleries, cafes, and boutique hotels. It is also home to what is believed to be the oldest existing building in Dubai, the Al Fahidi Fort. Built around 1787, the Al Fahidi Fort stood to guard the town against raids from surrounding tribes. At times the Fort was also used as the Ruler’s palace. By its banks stands a testament to old Arabia- the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Gypsum and coral buildings have been painstakingly restored to their former glory including its iconic wind towers that once refreshed the homes of the inhabitants in the very hot summer months. The neighbourhood has many historical gems including the oldest building in the city, the Al Fahidi Fort built in 1781. To taste local Emirati cuisine and an authentic cup of Arabian coffee a visit to the Arabian Tea House is a must. Recommended dishes include the regag bread, a tempting slice drizzled with honey and stuffed with egg and cheese and khabisah, a sweat blend of sautéed flour and molasses. Al Seef which faces the Golden Sands on the opposite bank of the Creek, is a charming example of the blend of past and present. The district stretches for 1.8 Km along the bank and is complete with winding alleys of stone and gypsum structures and has restaurant choices and is dotted with shops. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Spice Souk, alive with vibrant colours and aromas of the world’s most precious spices and the Gold Souk, where was immersed in the extravagant display of gold items across the street. An alley in charming Al-Shindagha Another not to be missed part of the historical Dubai is Al-Sindangha, the city’s oldest neighbourhood where I enjoyed the tranquillity of a bygone era. This is where the original residence of HH Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum is. It was built in 1896 and is now a museum. Nearby is the Al Shindagha Museum that tells the tale of the city’s seafaring roots in evocative detail and the Harud Al-Hadid Archaeological Museum. The area is full of tucked away cultural surprises! One can’t understand contemporary Dubai without acknowledging and experiencing its past. For this reason, as a seasoned traveller and a writer I must recommend staying in this part of the city at least for 2/3 night as no visit to Dubai would be complete without doing so. www.goldensandscreek.com
