  • INVITATION - INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR THE EMERGENCE OF MADAGASCAR

Andry Nirina Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar addresses the general debate of the 76th Session of the General Assembly of UN. Holijoana Raboana: Coordinator Emergence Madagascar, DGPP Special Economic Zones. Madagascar is in the midst of a transformation, despite the profound upheavals on a global scale. To chart its economic emergence, Madagascar has put in place a green and accelerated growth strategy that is both detailed and innovative. 《 We have been developing the Plan Emergence Madagascar (PEM) since 2019 under the leadership of His Excellency Mr. President of the Republic of Madagascar Andry Rajoelina 》 says Holijaona Raboana, who has overseen each step of the process. A clear vision, complemented by a strong political will to act for the well-being of all Malagasy. "To emerge on a human, social, economic and environmental level, based on good governance and carried by the use of sustainable technologies", this is the leitmotiv of the Plan Emergence Madagascar. 《 Flagship projects are catalyzed by zones that will capitalize on Madagascar's strategic position. The Special Economic Zones, or as they are now called in the PEM, Zones of Economic Emergence, are growth "pullers". Their impact on the national growth rate is fundamental for a country adopting an accelerated growth strategy. Flagship projects are thus "locomotive" projects that create related projects, such as connecting infrastructures, value chains, strong job creation and so on 》, stresses Holijaona Raboana. With the launch of the PEM scheduled for 27, 28, 29 October 2022, the "Great Island" is preparing to receive substantial investments, set in motion its sovereign fund and welcome international banks. It intends to ensure its energy sovereignty and convert its potential in strategic resources, particularly to exploit its oil and gas deposits by initiating win-win industrial partnerships in promising sectors. Energy is one of the pillars of the programme. The President of the Republic of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, reiterated this at the United Nations during its 77th General Assembly: "Energy is the pillar of development. 85% of Malagasy households still use candles and paraffin to light their homes. Despite this, Madagascar is a blessed country because we have water resources for hydraulic dams, a very high rate of sunshine for solar power plants and wind power for wind farms. At a time when many countries are facing energy problems, we need to accelerate the production of renewable energy to achieve self-sufficiency within five years. We plan to double or even triple our production capacity." Indeed, the installed capacity is 729 MW while a potential of 7800 MW is evaluated by the best experts. The country also plans to exploit its potential in the sectors of the future and is considering becoming one of the top exporters of green energy in Africa. 《 To this end, reforms are underway to encourage green investments by deploying a mix of doubly adaptive and incentive-based technical and financial proposals through, among others, the Economic Emergence Zones. 》advises Holijaona Raboana, for whom green finance is an opportunity to be seized. Overall, the PEM foresees a sustained pace of reform for a more diversified and open economy, strongly linked to global value chains. While some have begun as early as 2019 and are completed, the continuation of these structural reforms will strengthen economic resilience, establish green growth and promote export-oriented industrialisation by fostering regional integration. Agriculture is the backbone of many emerging economies. Madagascar will be no exception. The sector accounts for about 25% of GDP in low-income countries and more than 80% of the extremely poor live in rural areas.《 We know that in the medium term, public policies that support agricultural growth are at least twice as effective in reducing poverty as growth in other sectors. Supporting agripreneurs is a necessary step to enable their businesses and families to get back on their feet. It is with the objective of transforming and creating added value locally that the State has set up the Fihariana and ODOF (One District One Factory) mechanisms,》 analyses an expert from Jeunes Emergence Madagascar, a think tank that has been campaigning for the implementation of such a programme in Madagascar for several years. With 2.6 million hectares of arable land (31% arable area) and a diversified livestock sector (cattle, pigs, goats, poultry and fish), Madagascar can once again become the breadbasket of the region if the Agricultural Emergence Zones are properly implemented. Madagascar is not only an island with a unique biodiversity and an above-average number of endemic species: the subsoil is full of coveted and unexploited treasures. Gold, precious stones, iron, graphite, thorium, uranium, mica, nickel, graphite, chromite, rare earths, coal, bauxite, salt, quartz, oil sands, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and many semi-precious stones, to name but a few. Several international mining companies are already established. In the PEM, the equitable governance of natural resources is of strategic interest. If a Programming Law for the industrial development of the mining sector is in the works, the main objective assigned to the mining sector remains essentially the same. Namely, while ensuring the protection and preservation of the environment, the substantial increase of the share of mining products in the GDP. In this sense, the mining sector must ensure the promotion of an equitable and optimal exploitation of mining resources for sustainable growth and sustained socio-economic development. The specific objectives of this policy are defined on the basis of seven major challenges: improving governance of the sector, providing Madagascar with an efficient geo-scientific information base and system, providing the country with basic infrastructure, improving the structuring and supervision of the artisanal mining sector, improving the quality of human resources, integrating the mining and petroleum sectors into the national economy as a whole, and transforming the mining sector into a vector for sustainable development. Within the framework of the flagship projects included in the PEM: industrial exploitation of gold deposits, implementation of oil and gas projects on its unexploited blocks (onshore and offshore), exploitation of mining deposits (bauxite, marble, granite, malachite, etc.) through semi-public companies and a strategic role granted to the sovereign wealth fund. 《 It seems that the strategy adopted by Madagascar to finance its green emergence is based on public development aid in the form of grants and loans with very favourable conditions, which it already benefits from for the social sectors, education and health, and more generally for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Secondly, on PPPs and its BOT derivatives (BOO, BOL, BOOT, BTO, DBFO, ROO, ROT, DCMF, etc.) with a marked desire to attract foreign, especially Asian capital, and also through the constitution of a Sovereign Wealth Fund following the promulgation of Law No. 2021-024 and the recent appointment of members of the Board of Directors. Finally, the Green Climate Fund, especially since the commitments in this regard reaffirmed at COP 26. Moreover, as the President of the Republic recalled in New York on 21 September 2022, Madagascar is the fifth African country to have finalized its National Adaptation Plan, which makes it eligible to benefit from it.》estimate an external observer. Opportunities in the tourism sector will also be presented on 28 October. Holijaona Raboana approaches this meeting with optimism: 《 At the global level, the sector has recovered nearly 60% of its pre-pandemic level and Madagascar, which managed Covid-19 well, notably thanks to the CVO+, was classified as a green zone very early on. This allowed it to lift travel restrictions. It is now time to rethink tourism, its impact for humanity and for the planet, and to aim for eco-luxury projects, smart and sustainable marinas yacht club, and tourist emergence zones on our paradise islands》.

SPECIAL PROJECTS The Yard exhibition, which was held in the outer courtyard of Tersane as part of Contemporary Istanbul, featured 27 site-specific installations and sculptures by artists such as Anke Eilergerhard, Ardan Özmenoğlu, Ayla Turan, Bedri Baykam, Bilal Hakan Karakaya, Can Yıldırım, Canan Tolon, Erdil Yaşaroğlu, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Halil Altındere, Isaac Chong Wai, Ingravi Desa, Irfan Önürmen, Itamar Gov, Kemal Tufan, Luis Cera, Martian Tabakov, Martin Creed, Mentalklinik, Mehmet Ali Uysal, Osman Dinç, Renée Levi, Sergen Şehitoğlu, Stefano Bombardieri, Uğur Cinel, Vuslat. The Yard exhibition: Martin Creed, WaterYes! We’re OPEN by Canan Tolon refers to the mercantile label so often seen posted on storefronts. Like most of her works, it is essentially based on deceptive messaging. This installation is a field of doors standing all wide open to invite you in, while they obstruct one another. And if for some reason you assumed you were misled, the title will assure you were wrong to think so. The Istanbul-born artist Renée Levi recalls that her childhood spent in Istanbul has been a source of notable inspiration. With an authentic placement for Tersane Istanbul, Renée Levi brought back her large dimensioned paintings titled Barbra from the Color Field series, which are wide, colorful blocks arranged to complete one another and were once displayed in Museum Langmatt, Baden, in 2019. Martin Creed’s new work in Istanbul is a monument to water: water which is needed for life and of which people are mostly made; water which is fun and dangerous, life-giving and life-threatening. CIF Dialogues by TAV Passport. As part of the CIF Dialogues by TAV Passport series, the Contemporary Istanbul Foundation organized a series of public talks and discussions. Moderated by curator Marc Olivier Wahler, the “Testing the Elasticity of the Art Space” panel brought together Federica Beretta, Hou Hanru, Mehmet Even, Melisa Pezuk, and Murat Tabanlıoğlu on September 17. The speakers discussed the art spaces of today and tomorrow. Also on September 17, CIF Artist In Residence Program with Tosyalı Holding held a talk program focused on upcycling and sustainability. On September 18, there was a public talk ”Art in Public Space” and “Digital Design: New Horizons for Architecture.” This summer, Contemporary Istanbul Foundation (CIF) has been running the CIF Artist-in-Residence program in collaboration with Tosyali Holding. Focusing on the theme of upcycling, artists Chiara de Rocchi, Emrullah Örünklü, Koray Tokdemir, Nermin Ülker, and Songül Girgin have been working with scrap metal materials. Their works were exhibited at the 17th edition of Contemporary Istanbul in Tersane Istanbul. This project is an example of CIF’s efforts to engage major Turkish businesses and motivate them to support the art community. Contemporary Istanbul's main partner Akbank presented the exhibition Other Voices, Other Rooms by Clement Valla, curated by Hasan Bulent Kahraman. By making use of the potential of digital art, Valla adds new dimensions to nature, which we look at every day, we think we see and believe to be in its right place and stable, yet has an aspect that always remains obscure and mysterious. He drags nature, with a dimension that is imperceptible to us, to the limits of our perception of reality. The Yard exhibition: Canan Tolon, Yes! We're OPEN.Pernod Ricard Turkey, a partner of Contemporary Istanbul, presented the sculpture-performance Disruption by artist duo ha:ar (Hande Şekerciler and Arda Yalkın). The duo scrutinizes the potential of technology to radically change the concept of art by starting a conversation about the relationships between art, machine, and artificial intelligence. With the help of the robotic arm, which they brought to the fair, ha:ar were producing the artwork in real time. Throughout the fair, the audience was able to observe the daily progress of the work, and on the last day of the fair, they got the chance to witness the finessing interventions by the artists themselves. As part of Disruption, House of Brothers Lounge also hosted talks about the place of artificial intelligence and technology in the art world, the nature of their relationship, and the future of art. At LG OLED ART booth, Kim Whanki’s Universe was exhibited as NFT. This is the first NFT work produced based on the artist’s original artwork (5-IV-71#200 Universe) which was completed in New York in the 1970s. It is the only masterpiece made in two widths among Kim Whanki's works to deeply feel the lyricism of nature and the mystery of the vast cosmic space. Special project: Güvenç Özel, Spectrum. Artist Güvenç Özel presented a new project, Spectrum. It utilizes cutting-edge optical and simulation technologies to embed the audience into digital art forms in real time. By feeding live camera feeds into a game engine, Spectrum creates an interactive and ever-changing distortion of reality. The audience can see their own reflection on the digital and animated forms on its LED surfaces, while the environmental parameters such as light and architectural context are grafted into the artwork. Contemporary Istanbul partner QUA Granite presented a work by sculptor Günnur Özsoy. With its shining mother-of-pearl color and fluid form, the work she created for CI reminds the audience of a drop of water or stones found in nature. For more information please contact pr@ci.com.tr

It will be Christie’s most important single owner watch collection auction ever in Geneva. From the stunning private collection of 112 watches: (fltr) the sapphire and titanium Richard Mille RM56-01; the 18K gold Rolex “Daytona”, ref. 6241, with champagne Paul Newman dial; and the one-off Vacheron Constantin “Mercator” ref. 43050 with “Ferrari Enzo” cloisonné dial. Geneva, 20 September 2022 – Christie’s Watche announces live auction Legendary and Unique Watches: The Collection of a Lifetime, presenting 112 timepieces considered rare treasures by astute collectors. Not one of these watches has ever been offered at auction and many carry the most coveted and desirable specifications. One-off creations, personalised dials, prototypes and the No.1 of limited editions – many watches will represent a unique opportunity for collectors around the globe. Following a month-long world preview that begins in New York on 1 October 2022 and will take a carefully curated selection of timepieces to Hong Kong, Dubai, London, Jakarta and Los Angeles "Legendary and Unique Watches: The Collection of a Lifetime” will arrive in Geneva on 2 November 2022. For your calendar: the auction will be held on Sunday, 6 November 2022 at 5.00pm in Geneva at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues. This collection spans four decades of passion and includes some of the earliest examples by renowned independent watchmakers, including very rare references by Patek Philippe, Rolex and others. Together they form the most important single owner collection ever to be offered in Geneva, with a portion of the proceeds going to philanthropy. The auction is expected to fetch in the region of CHF 20 million. Richard Mille, Limited Edition, REF. RM56-01 AN SAPHIR/PR00, NO. 011, 2013 To the best of our knowledge, this magnificent timepiece is the first example ever to be offered at international auction. One of Richard Mille’s most extraordinary and ambitious creations, the RM56-01 is about maximum transparency; the case alone is crafted from single blocks of transparent, incredibly difficult to machine sapphire crystal that took an incredible 40 days, 24-hours per day to create, followed by a further 350 hours to polish. The tourbillon shines in the lower part of the transparent dial with titanium minute ring and luminous hour indexes. At 1 o’clock, the torque sector display shows the mainspring tension. A symmetrical sector display for the power-reserve is placed opposite. A push-button in the crown allows for three options – W (winding), N (neutral) or H (hands) – which are displayed by a small indicator at 4 o’clock (estimate: CHF2,500,000-4,500,000). Rolex ref. 6241 “Daytona”, 18K gold, champagne “Paul Newman” dial, ca. 1968 In the world of Rolex Daytona collecting and appreciation at the very highest level, extreme rarity is measured by small degrees. This exceptional 18k gold Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6241 (case no. 1’757’900) with champagne “Paul Newman” dial and bracelet is an extremely rare chronograph that fulfils these criteria and more. The 6241 was produced only between 1966 and 1969 and is therefore a rare reference in its own right. 2250 pieces were made in stainless steel, 300 in 18K gold and 450 in 14K gold. It was fitted with “non-Oyster” or “non-screw-down” chronograph buttons and a bezel with black plastic insert, the tachymeter scale was printed in white. The dials featured “Rolex Cosmograph” but not always “Daytona” (estimate: CHF600,000-1,000,000). Vacheron Constantin ref. 43050 “Mercator”, special request platinum automatic wristwatch with a Métiers d’Art “Ferrari Enzo” cloisonné enamel dial. First released in 1994 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the passing of the 16th century cartographer Gerardus Mercator, Vacheron Constantin’s distinctive “Mercator” was a revelation: it displayed time via a double retrograde mechanism with hands in the form of a cartographer’s proportional divider. Upon reaching 12, the hour hand ‘flies’ back to its starting position; the same occurs when the minute hand reaches 60. The present creation by the world’s oldest watchmaking Manufacture is a “Mercator” made by special request in platinum; its hand-made cloisonné dial representing a “Ferrari Enzo” is a testament to Vacheron Constantin’s peerless Métiers d’Art department. Fitted with a special 21K skeletonized gold rotor, the movement is just as unique (estimate: CHF100,000-200,000). • Luxury Watch Market's Shifts

By Omar Al Bataineh, Finance and Watch Editor Founder of www.watchaholics.net Don’t blindly follow someone, rather follow the market's whispers and try to hear what it is telling you. The more inexperienced individuals enter any market, the more it is exposed to overinflated prices. The luxury watch market post-pandemic has seen a lot of self-proclaimed gurus that lack knowledge of the global market's economic state, which may be one of the many reasons for overinflated prices. At the peak of the luxury watch market in early 2022, Rolex stainless steel models traded at 3x their listed prices; meanwhile, Patek Philippe Nautilus models traded at more than 5x their listed prices. The luxury watch market, being an alternative asset class that gets influenced by traditional assets, has started to correct, but the secondary market hasn’t been looking great. Markets are usually affected by both external and internal forces. Limited edition Patek Philippe Tiffany & Co. Nautilus External forces such as global stock markets that have shattered the confidence of any retail investor that has suffered declines of not less than 20% YTD conservatively, and can go up to 80% if it was a highly speculative portfolio. Another external force is the so-called transitory inflation that hasn’t yet shown any sign of abidance even after the FED's interest rate hikes, and that’s a massive concern to speculators that face a risk of the FED increasing interest rate hikes as a benchmark. Above: OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA IN OYSTERSTEEL , M116500LN. Courtesy Rolex. Internal forces, such as overleveraged investors that entered the market in its best times thinking it was a money-making heaven, now face the reality of the market's drawbacks and may have to dump inventory to meet leverage obligations. Economics 101 When interest rates are low, investors get the chance to speculate more on risky asset classes that generate abnormal returns. However, interest rates can’t stay low forever or else it will cause inflation, mispriced assets, and many other complications. The luxury watch, like any other alternative asset class post-COVID-19 that has gone through abnormal, unjustified growths, must come back to its mean prices, if not lower, due to current economic and political complications. In addition to the above, the gray market has shown signs of being very manipulative in terms of some charitable auctions, or maybe even call it the free publicly announced tax write-off. The tax system's loopholes put some alternative asset classes in danger of inflated prices and may be one of the causes of a market's correction. The tax system is one of many that add fuel to the fire; however, it is not as impactful as the amount of wealth low interest rates and cryptocurrencies have caused. • Art & Abstraction

From Modernism to Abstraction, the breath of the 1950s By Estelle Arielle Bouchet The concept of Abstract Art is not confined to being a sophisticated movement of our time or some intellectual affectation for a circle of insiders, but rather relates to a pictorial tradition that is brutal, vernacular and instinctive, dating back to the beginning of time: rock painting without any kind of human representation whatsoever or like the Gate of Babylon which highlights a pictorial dialectic made up of symbols and animals or the ancient frescoes of the Lascaux caves. Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Rigide et courbé, signed with monogram and dated '35' (lower left) oil and sand on canvas. 114 x 162.4 cm. Executed in Paris, December 1935. Courtesy Christies.com. Lyrical abstraction from Wassily Kandisky These representations, because of their mystery and their origins that are so remote, leave enormous room for poetry. Whether it’s the funerary art of the Pharaohs with its hieroglyphics or the cave paintings or the early writings of Sumer in Mesopotamia, there is always the same mystery and an invitation to dream, similar to what happens in the Abstract art of the Twentieth Century. This latter vigorously rejects the figurative academicism of the Nineteenth Century that never stopped reproducing, with a romantic monotony, relative reality with its still lifes, portraits and landscapes. While the intention was to take over reality in a rational faithful way, it was with an almost neurotic toughness, because this was ruled by a fear of seeing the unknown, so one thus stripped away, at the same time, the poetic, symbolic and magical dimension of creation and the surrounding world. This obsessively figurative vision reflects human confinement that cuts us off from the original myth of Narcissus, which gives everyone the opportunity to be in a permanent state of metamorphosis. “You have to dive into the unknown to find the new” was the battle cry for Baudelaire in the well-mannered bourgeois Nineteenth Century. All painters or artists who were committed to the Abstract view aimed at rebirth with this Paradise Lost which corresponded to the very nature of the poetic topos. Whether it be a work by Miro or by Kandinsky or the dark and mysterious atmosphere of a film by Alfred Hitchcock lit up by the presence of a star like Grace Kelly at the peak of her sublime goddess beauty, it is the same dialectic of a mystery in search of a transcendent fugitive moment, but to which we can devote a lifetime. The search for the Sublime is inextricably linked to the abstract approach. This metaphysical form which follows just after the original form, whether in design like the wonderful black and white sketches of René Gruau from Christian Dior featuring an ideal of refined elegance that suggested more than it imposed and gave birth to the “New Look”, the name given by Caramel Snow, editor of the celebrated Harper’s Bazaar. But make no mistake, under this apparent simplicity; Christian Dior once again made Paris, like a phoenix from the ashes, the world capital of fashion just after the Second World War. It is similar in the purity of the constructions on blank backgrounds by the painter Mondrian in the 40s: silence embodied in the colour white, itself symbolizing a window onto the breath of the imagination and mouthfuls of oxygen from an emptiness that is healthy and calming, taking us to a perfectly-structured geometric space. André Courrèges later took up these themes again in his minimalist dresses in the 60s which were highly graphic. The first, although this is still subject to controversy, was Mary Quant from Great Britain with her creation of the mini-skirt which sold by thousands in her shop in the King’s Road in 1965. Mary Quant represents a perfect example of that era when mechanization was at the service of creativity: faced with a voracious enormous demand, the answer was by infinitely producing and reproducing and to use this to make the industrial tools available through Taylorism. In this Modernist era, America reigns supreme and imposes its laws. On the same subject of global success: at the 1959 American Toy Fair in New York, Ruth Handler presented the first Barbie. The doll- woman exactly corresponded to the aesthetic canons of the pin-ups of the 50s. The fatal carnal beauty of the sex-symbols of the 50s makes themselves seen, embodying life and its physical appetites. America, the country that rescued Europe from horror and destruction, often had the lead in World War II hero figures. Its all-time stars had no rivals and this period invented the feminine ideal: platinum-blond hair, wasp waists, wide hips and large breasts. From Rita Hayworth to Ava Gardner, from Liz Taylor as Cleopatra at her peak, through Grace Kelly who radiated the glow of her very aristocratic more discreet beauty as far as Europe .... This Modernist and Post Modernist movement, two sides of the same coin, embodies everything and its opposite: the frantic sensuality of this post-war period mingled with invention and the development of the applied arts, pre-announcing the bulimic consumption of the 60s. From the phantasmagorical elegance of Kenneth Lane, inventing delirious jewellery for well-bred American WASPs while drawing his inspiration from a bestiary of animals or going back to a new Ancient Egyptian purity with his grand Cleopatra-like wrist pieces. A world where Hollywood has its importance and television has already announced the warning signs of “all virtual” which today occupies all the space and punctuates all exchanges of all kinds. The 1950's was also a relevant source of inspiration for Van Cleef & Arpels's latest High Jewellery collection, ‘Chevron Mystérieux’. Conceived by its CEO and Art Director Nicolas Bos and his talented team, ‘Chevron Mystérieux’ is a modern echo of the Mystery Set technique - an illustrious and innovative technique developed by the Maison back in 1933. This emblematic Collection offers a 50's vision of its new creation illustrated by the drawings of Jérémie Fischer. A mixture of purity and craft this masterpiece necklace is composed of three pear-cut diamonds in a trilogy of 31.24, 12.18 and 12.07 carats surrounded by a crimp of intense emeralds, sapphires and diamonds; it’s sustained by a pure and geometrical structure highly inspired by the 50's abstract spirit; it is utterly captivating! It’s true genius manifests itself in its metamorphic role - with its detachable pendants, this versatile collar can be cleverly adapted and remodelled in six different ways. • King Charles III

By Carlos Mundy After 70 years of reign, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September. During her reign, the longest in England's millennial history, she fulfilled her promise to be at the service of her people, whether her life was long or short. Curiously, she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria I, by 7 years. I was born during the reign of Her Majesty the Queen. She was an exceptional human being, with incredible strength and dignity. Her unwavering dedication and work for the country and the Commonwealth were exemplary. Just two days before her death, Liz Truss was sworn in as her 15th Prime Minister. Her courage, her heart and her sense of humour have been a source of inspiration to all her subjects and to many others around the world. Her Majesty was an example of true values, of constancy, of respect, of service, of discretion and duty, of intelligence and of Love. May her soul rest in peace! And what will the reign of the new King Charles III be like? The first decision he has taken is to reign under the name of Charles III. Charles I and Charles II belonged to the Stuart dynasty and their reigns were turbulent. There was speculation that he might take the name George VII in honour of his grandfather. No heir has ever spent so long waiting to accede to the throne. King Charles III has been waiting for this moment all his life. At his birth 73 years ago, he became second in line to the throne and for the past six decades, since his mother ascended the throne in 1952 when he was three years old, he has been the heir apparent. Just as the Queen has been the longest serving monarch in British history, Prince Charles has been the longest serving Prince of Wales in history. His career as Prince of Wales, in its breadth and depth, will be his true legacy. He was the most innovative Prince of Wales of all time: he was an activist like no other heir to the throne. Part of the drive to do all that he did, including his philanthropy, his entrepreneurial initiatives, the institutions, and traditions he helped preserve, demonstrate "his desire to prove he was worthy to be king". He was endlessly educated, trained, and prepared for a job that has finally come to him at an age when most men want nothing more than a quiet retirement; a time that, in his case, might have consisted of growing organic vegetables and painting landscapes with his watercolours. Since the day of the Queen's death, he has been Head of State of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a dozen other countries. He is also the titular head of the Church of England, head of the army and judiciary, and a host of other royal titles and duties. How he manages his reign will shape the future of the monarchy. Charles's efforts as heir to the throne to relate more intimately to the public reflect the fact that he needs their support and affection. The laws and traditions governing Britain's constitutional monarchy dictate that the sovereign should keep out of party politics, but Charles has spent much of his adult life speaking out on issues close to his heart, particularly the environment, and his words have provoked friction with politicians and businessmen who accused the then Prince of Wales of meddling in matters on which he should have kept silent. There is little doubt that the new sovereign will follow his mother's example and mute or moderate his views now that he is king. In his first speech as monarch, Charles sought to reassure his critics: "My life will, of course, change as I take on my new responsibilities″, he said: "it will no longer be possible for me to devote so much time and energy to the charities and affairs I care so much about. But I know that this important work will continue in the hands of others I trust". This initiative underlines the important role of Prince William, now Prince of Wales and heir to the throne. William has already made the environment one of his main issues and is likely to take an even more prominent role in this area now that his father is King. Speaking of the new King, Mrs Truss said in her speech in the House of Commons: "All of us in this House will support him as he leads our country into a new era of hope and progress. Our new Carolingian era. The crown endures. Our nation endures. And in that spirit, I say God save the King'. With the support of Queen Camilla and of the Prince of Wales, a new era begins: the Carolingian era. I have no doubt that Charles III will go down in history as an extraordinary monarch. God save the King!
