  • Dubai hosts The Stellar Odyssey by Jaeger-LeCoultre

Dubai will be the first city to host The Stellar Odyssey, a major exhibition on global tour by Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre, it will debut in February making the first stop in the UAE. The Stellar Odyssey pays homage to the astronomical phenomena that lie at the origins of time measurement. The exhibition is an invitation for watch enthusiasts and the general public alike to discover how the mysteries of the cosmos are translated into micro-mechanical wonders that capture the universe in miniature, in order to tell the time. Exploring the wonders that we can observe in our night sky, The Stellar Odyssey reveals the awe-inspiring phenomena that the watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre express through their celestial complications, displaying mankind’s link to the cosmos directly on the wrist in a literal, philosophical and uniquely captivating way. Following the inauguration of The Stellar Odyssey at Watches and Wonders in 2022, Dubai has been chosen as the first stop on a tour of major world cities. The exhibition will be staged in a spectacular pavilion ‘floating’ on the waters of the Dubai Fountain, with Burj Khalifa as its backdrop. "It is an important part of our mission at Jaeger-LeCoultre to share the secrets behind the art and craft of watchmaking with the wider world by bringing our Manufacture from the Vallée de Joux to the public around the globe," says Catherine Rénier, CEO of Jaeger-LeCoultre. "The ancient cultures of the Middle East played a seminal role in the origins of time measurement, and we are therefore delighted that Dubai is where the world tour of The Stellar Odyssey makes its debut. It is a special opportunity to trace the unbroken line through several millennia to the exceptional legacy of innovation that has driven our Maison for 190 years and the work that we do today." Showcasing a careful curated selection of the Manufacture’s most remarkable historic timepieces as well as its most recent celestially-inspired timepieces – including the extraordinary Atmos clock and the Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 – the exhibition features multi-media installations that will take visitors on a virtual journey to the cosmos. It translates the wonders of the celestial world into art installations and multi-sensory experiences, while the Atelier d’Antoine, named after the Maison’s founder, Antoine LeCoultre, shares watchmaking know-how through hands-on educational workshops based on the Stellar Odyssey theme. The Stellar Odyssey will be presented from Wednesday 4th to Friday 23rd February 2023 at the Dubai Fountain, Downtown Dubai, open daily from 2:00pm to 12.00 am. Tickets may be booked online at www.online-booking.jaeger-lecoultre.com Showcasing a careful curated selection of the Manufacture’s most remarkable historic timepieces as well as its most recent celestially-inspired timepieces – including the extraordinary Atmos clock and the Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 – the exhibition features multi-media installations that will take visitors on a virtual journey to the cosmos. It translates the wonders of the celestial world into art installations and multi-sensory experiences, while the Atelier d’Antoine, named after the Maison’s founder, Antoine LeCoultre, shares watchmaking know-how through hands-on educational workshops based on the Stellar Odyssey theme. Revealing the Mysteries of Astronomical Timekeeping in Eight Chapters Within the main exhibition pavilion, The Stellar Odyssey explores the creative and cultural universe of astronomically-inspired watchmaking in eight chapters. Visitors begin by discovering the very origins of time, the impact of celestial phenomena on the way we measure it, and the origins of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s expertise in developing astronomical complications. Each of the five following chapters leads visitors through a different cosmic phenomenon, displaying rare historic watches as well as timepieces from the most recent collections to illustrate how the Manufacture has continually reinterpreted the movements of the stars and planets in the form of intricate complications that represent, measure and even predict celestial events directly on the wrist. Enriching the Stellar Experience In the heart of the main pavilion beneath a geodesic dome, an immersive digital show takes visitors on a virtual journey through space and time, transporting them through infinite space and 13.7 billion years of time to reveal the mysteries of the cosmos in five episodes – from the origins of our known universe to the present day. “Through a variety of immersive experiences, The Stellar Odyssey presents different interpretations of the cosmos and its relation to timekeeping, inviting visitors to understand it more deeply,” says Catherine Rénier. “As well as transmitting the savoir-faire of watchmaking through the Atelier d’Antoine workshops, these experiences include two special collaborations under our Made of Makers programme.” Established for the purpose of enriching the dialogue that has long existed between horology, artisanship and art, Made of Makers is a programme of collaborations with artists and artisans from various disciplines outside watchmaking. It focuses on world-class creators who share Jaeger-LeCoultre’s values of creativity, expertise and precision and whose work explores new forms of expression through different and often unexpected materials and media. For The Stellar Odyssey, Jaeger-LeCoultre has commissioned projects by French multi-media artist Guillaume Marmin and world-renowned mixologist Matthias Giroud. For his installation, Passengers: Through Time, Guillaume Marmin employs light, sound and movement in complex relationships that redefine traditional ideas of sculpture, space and time. As visitors walk through the work, infinite reflections and dizzying perspectives take them on a stellar excursion in which they are the protagonists, inviting reflection on the fundamental question of what time really is. For the Stellar Atelier, Matthias Giroud has created a menu of highly original soft cocktails inspired by the cosmos, taking his inspiration from the colours, temperatures and forms of the stars and planets, and blending familiar ingredients with intriguing scents and flavours from the Vallée de Joux. In the Atelier d’Antoine, visitors can complete their journey of astral discovery by joining a hands-on Discovery Workshop that focuses on the wonder of astronomical complications and the celestial origins of time-keeping – a rare opportunity to gain deep insight and practical experience of this magical world.

  • The shameful decision of the Greek government: No state funeral for King Konstantinos ll..

By Carlos Mundy On Tuesday the 10th HM King Konstantinos II of the Hellenes died at the age of 82. In a statement after his death, the late King’s private office released a statement that read: “It is with deep sadness that the Royal Family announces that HM King Constantine, beloved husband, father, and brother, passed away yesterday, January 10, 2023, while being treated at ‘HYGEIA’ hospital in Greece.” HM King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece Before succeeding to the throne and as Crown Prince he won a Golden Medal at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games– the country’s first gold medal in nearly 50 years. He was received by the population of Athens as a hero. After King Pavlos’ death in 1964, he was crowned and from the start of his reign attempted to modernise the country. Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, Prince of Denmark, and his wife Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece, Princess of Denmark In the summer of 1965, thousands of citizens took to the streets across the country in protest of the removal of the centrist prime minister, Yeoryios Papandreou and two years of political instability followed and culminated in the coup d’état of the Colonels, on April 21, 1967. HM King Constantine II of Greece www.greekroyalfamily.gr With the Palace surrounded by tanks the King was forced to recognize the government of the coup plotters but from the very start was planning their overthrow. The junta, led by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos brutally consolidated their regime using censorship, mass arrests of opponents, torture, and imprisonments. Monarchist navy officers with the knowledge of their King unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the colonels in June 1973 and Papadopoulos declared the country a republic, endorsed subsequently in a rigged plebiscite. In 1974, the Military Junta collapsed and was succeeded by a civilian government. The government of Konstantinos Karamanlis held a further referendum to determine whether the king should be restored to his throne, but Konstantinos was not allowed to return to campaign on his own behalf but was allowed an address from London. This lack of unacceptable democratic protocol should have invalidated the referendum’s results. Thereafter, for decades, Konstantinos was prevented from visiting Greece except briefly and on rare occasions: for his mother’s funeral in 1981 and for an attempted holiday in 1993. The following year, the Greek government of Andreas Papandreou withdrew the Greek nationality from the royal family and expropriated their assets. In 2002 the European Court of Human Rights sentenced the Greek State to compensate him with 12 million euros for the confiscated assets. It nevertheless took another two years to pay the money and, when it did so, the government took it from its extraordinary natural disasters fund rather than general reserves. In retaliation, the King used the money to set up the Queen ana Maria Foundation to assist Greeks suffering from natural disasters. The Greek government acted unjustly and vindictively and insulted him by not allowing him to be Greek. Finally, the King was allowed to return to live there in 2013, long after the events that had toppled him from the throne and now one of Greece’s heads of State has passed away and the Greek Government one again has taken another disgraceful decision that shows such vindictiveness that it reflects negatively on the government and the country as a whole. The Greek government, led by Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has taken the surprising decision of stripping the funeral that will be held on Monday, Jan. 16, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens of any State recognition. The service will be officiated by Archbishop Hieronymos, head of the Greek Orthodox Church. The government will give him no State honours, no military honours and will be represented solely by the Minister of Culture. This is a shameful day for the Hellenic Republic and it’s government and an insult to the Royal families that will be attending including those of Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark. Regardless of any political favouritism that might be expected from whatever side of the political spectrum, the King will be buried as a normal citizen despite having served as Head of State, despite his unquestionable patriotism and despite his life of service. He will be buried in the cemetery of Tatoi, the house the government stole from him, as a normal citizen, after having had his nationality revoked for a considerable part of his life, with no recognition for his contribution to the nation. This shameful decision by the Greek government contrasts with that of Romania, also a republic who held a full State funeral for their former king Michael II in Bucharest in 2017. It shows the lack of compassion and empathy toward the family and to the Greek monarchists. It is clear to everyone that they are afraid that a state funeral would have stirred monarchist feeling and sympathy for Crown Prince Pavlos, who is now the rightful King of the Hellenes.

The winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and, among others, of the Pike Peak hill climb, is taking advantage of his assets to thwart the competition. The performances are there. The duo quickly took the measure of their new vehicle's capabilities. Their opponents are aware of it. The crew is in 6th position in the general classification at the end of the 8th stage. The blue camouflage of their Toyota does not go unnoticed on the stony and sandy tracks of Saudi Arabia! When the elements are unleashed, Highway to Ha'il becomes the anthem of the Dakar. Dantesque weather conditions were the reason for the 3rd stage. The race was stopped at checkpoints 2 and 3, which disrupted the organization of the following stages. For the Rebells, this unexpected stop of the competition gave them the opportunity to focus on the rest of the event. The result? Alexandre Pesci and Stephan Kuhni (#251) who had finished at a respectable 51st place in the general classification during the 43rd Dakar consolidate this year their position in the Top 40. For their fourth participation in the Dakar in a row, the experience of the non-professional team speaks for itself! In the face of adversity, the Rebells take up every challenge with panache. All the assets of the original model that made the success of the collection are still present as its elegant cushion-shaped case in black DLC steel. The time data, hours, minutes, seconds and a discreet date window at 3 o'clock, are animated in a decoration inspired by the two-spoke steering wheels of vintage sports cars. The golden second hand enhances this exclusive composition. Rebellion Racing would like to warmly thank its loyal sponsors for their unconditional support throughout this epic race.

  • Princess Jhanvi Kumari Mewar

Jhanvi Kumari Mewar (Jahnavi Kumari Mewar) Head of family office and founder of reverse origination methodology Princess Jahnavi Kumari of Mewar, who represents the 77th generation of India's most powerful and oldest royal family dynasty, is the head of her family's office, based in Udaipur & Jodhpur Rajasthan, India. Princess Jhanvi (Jahnavi) has also founded and successfully launched several companies within the financial services, real estate, industrial, and healthcare sectors. Previously, she had worked for Ord Minett/JP Morgan as an Investment Adviser. During a bespoke Family office event ELITE Global Leaders Conference in Rome and at the Vatican, organised by JABOY Productions in 2021, where Princess Jahnavi was invited as a keynote speaker, she spoke to Visionnaire Moralmoda about her role as the head of the family office, in a conversation led by Howard Levine, a property tycoon from Los Angeles. Visionnaire: What specific sectors are you currently invested in, and what sectors are you thinking about investing in in the future? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: Our family office strategy is straight-forward; we are opportunistic in where and how we invest, and the only sectors that we do not touch are technology and telecommunications. And in terms of where we are invested currently, I think that being sector diagnostic, you can safely assume that we are across the entire spectrum in terms of having portfolios in various sectors and various geographies around the world. Tech and telecommunication are two exceptions that we never invested in, and we most likely will not in the future either. Our focus right now and always is based on our in-house strategy which I developed in 2011; the reverse origination methodology.. Prior to that we had a fairly vanilla style of investing, based obviously on very specific medium to long term factors. Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: There are so many definitions of impact investing. We don't fit into the standard definition of impact investing, but we have made impact investments in India. Since the development of the methodology, what we tend to do is reverse originate portfolio assets. We will watch a specific sector and a specific asset within that sector somewhere for two to five years, and we will then approach that particular company or that particular asset in a specific geography and we reverse-originate transaction or create an asset of our own based on indicators from our methodology. On occasion this could mean that asset stakeholders are not interested in raising capital or new strategic investor onboarding coming but we persevere, negotiate and work on that particular relationship for years if need be. Thereafter, we can reverse-originate a portfolio asset that sits within our portfolio of companies if it is a strategic fit. So it makes sense from a vertical integration perspective or it just helps us unlock intrinsic value in a pre-existing portfolio company. We implement our methodology to even our private structured credit portfolio. Do you look for a controlling investment stake, or are you okay with taking a minority passive investment stake? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: Our preference is a controlling stake but in the absence of that a seizable minority with the board seat is also something that is give due consideration under very specific circumstances. So you are not keen on the above-mentioned sectors, and I will get back later to why, but please share with us some of the sectors that you are most excited about now? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: It is not about today, tomorrow, or yesterday. We have although identified three preferred sectors, healthcare is the one that we are particularly excited about moving forward, as well as education. So, I would say if we were to analyse where our preferences will lie in the next 2-4 years or maybe even on the horizon of five years we would be looking very strongly and very seriously at health care and education, where we already have the pre-existing portfolio assets. Are you looking for more mature companies with consistent cash flows or even more on the early-stage side? Where would you like to invest? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: We are standard private equity operators. We don't look at start-ups or pre-commercialised stage companies. You invest in mature companies that are at a later stage. Do you have a strategy on how to create value so that your investment will grow over time? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: Yes, that is what I was mentioning earlier, how the reverse origination methodology allows us to create value because we not only invest in companies that are a strategic fit for pre-existing portfolio assets or add ons in the long term. But also assets that will generate high double digit returns in the long term with a view towards succession and legacy. What is your investment horizon for a specific asset? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: We are primarily long-term investors, but of course there are certain investments where we will exit at the five-year point or maybe the seven-year point, we don’t however invest in funds.. We are always direct to assets. So for us, it is the long and medium term horizon that works idyllically. Are there any new sectors that you are excited about that you don't have in your portfolio that you are looking at? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: Not in particular, no. We are a rather atavistic family office. We get adventurous but not too adventurous. In terms of geography, we tend to invest outside of India. Unless we are divesting and reinvesting in real estate within India. Those are our in-house projects on pre-owned land parcels and so on, so except for that one exception we tend to steer clear of all other sectors as far as investing in India. My father's office was set up in the late 1990s based purely on emerging market private equity strategies. So we love our emerging markets. We are a little cautious of frontier markets, but we have a current allocation, I would say, maybe 15% of our portfolio in frontier markets, which, to us, is too much. But we are still happy with it, and we are going to stick with it. But the emerging market is our favourite place to play in. The buzzword now in private equity and family offices is impact investing, do you focus on that? How does this impact your investment analysis? Jhanvi Kumari Mewar: There are so many definitions of impact investing. We don't fit into the standard definition of impact investing, but we have made impact investments in India. Again, focus on the real estate space while thinking along the lines of communal engagement, growth & upliftment. So if we end up divesting out of a land parcel, that sits within a rural territory, where there is a significant need for communal support & upliftment, we will make that priority and find a way to have it zoned into a development area - working with the government and once the zoning is done, we then try and obviously develop projects, so that there is job placement, more opportunities to make a livelihood; with mandatory balance sheet allocation towards subsidised education & training for children & women. We also use our foundations to fund local schools and create opportunities for children to be better taken care of medically and from an educational perspective as well. I wouldn't call that impact investing per se, but it is certainly our way of making an impact. We don't do climate-related impact investing, at least not yet.
